We’re experimenting with new ways to move animated creatures for our art projects and classes. Here’s a prototype of an animation stand I built with my associate Sarah Brewer, using laser cut wood and cardboard to make it move up and down, as if flying. My creative partner Jean Bolte is showing how we could add a pair of eyes to make the creature come alive.
This open-close mechanism was designed by maker HyunJoo Oh, who is working with PaperMechatronics.net and has graciously shared their detailed instructions with us. Much appreciated!

Tesla Corporation's 'Cybertruck' prototype seen and photographed in downtown San Mateo, California located directly across the San Francisco Bay from its factory in Fremont, California. Mechanical and software issues have plagued the rollout of this new model, which began on Nov. 30, 2023, four years after Tesla announced the Cybertruck.
In many of our projects, we'll prototype states of a page- here is an example of a widget on a Photobucket page. Clicking on each option in the widget changes the state of the page.
This is a great technique for helping the product team see how interactions on a page influence both the design and engineering requirements.

Successful prototype on 20.12.2011, some tweaking necessary. Just thought this would be a neat little piece to have.
This is the mythical 1974 Paris Motor Show turbo prototype. It's spent most of it life here in Australia, as both a race car and then a road car. Most people
know little about this car and many inaccuracies abound. It's often referred to as having a wooden engine. It had a real but non-functioning engine from the sump plate up to the induction, but the
'turbo' bits were indeed made of timber. The sale sheet shows a chassis number.
Even though it should have 2 consecutive threes in it, the chassis is that of a 1973 2.4S coupe. Its original windscreen had the 'Carrera' script engraved across the top, but sadly that is long gone. I believe the car was sold to Chicago. In the 70's I worked at
Sydney's then-only Porsche dealer and we had the car in the showroom for a while. I have lots of photos of it in its original condition. I love this car! I'd love to build a rep of it. These shots were taken at the Phillip Island historic meeting in 2007.
This is a prototype of a hat I designed. What do you think?

We are teaching a new maker art class called ‘Robot World’, to help children create their own artistic robots. This class for grades 4-5 will take place at the Lycée Français in Sausalito. Students will learn how to make their bots move in a variety of ways, as well as play sounds and light up, using a programmable Arduino board. They will then decorate their animated creatures, give them a story, and create a magical world for them to live in.
This photo set covers our our first prototypes for this class, featuring a Baby Angel, an Alien and a Bamboodu native american spirit, in different stages of construction. Students will design their own characters, and we will laser cut wooden figures based on their designs, using the same mechanisms to make characters shake their heads and wave their arms while they roam.
Each student will receive a robot kit, which they will learn to assemble, control and program. They will then take their completed robot home with them, after the class ends. For this course, my partner Edward Janne and I have created our own robot kit, using an Arduino Feather M0 for the robot, an RF remote, a custom chassis, plus three additional servos and more parts. Our robot kit is similar to commercial products, but with a lot more features at a lower cost.
We are also teaching a similar class for adults and teens at Tam Makers in Mill Valley, which will use the same robot kit. In just two evenings in late September, we'll show students how to build their own robot with Arduino, make it move, light up and play sounds -- then take it home.

One of the LMS diesel pioneers number 100001 taken from an old photograph I was given a number of year ago. Sadly I don`t know when or where it was taken or even who the two people are , but it is still an interesting photo.
