We’re prototyping new ways to move animated creatures for our upcoming Haunted House with lower-school and middle-school students in our Maker Art class this fall.
In this after-school workshop, students will build a fantasy world together, with magical creatures, ghosts, witches and other animated characters inspired by Halloween.
To prepare for this class, my associate Sarah Brewer and I are prototyping an animated creature, using laser cut wood and cardboard to make it move up and down, as if flying.
This open-close mechanism was designed by maker HyunJoo Oh, who is working with PaperMechatronics.net. She has graciously shared their detailed instructions with us. Much appreciated!
We will combine arts and technology such as this to bring our class creations to life: each student will have their own room in our haunted house, and they will learn to build simple robots and automata like these, then play with lights and sounds to tell their stories for our ‘show and tell’.
We are offering this class in two different schools this fall. At the Lycée Français in Sausalito, we teach lower school students in grades 4 and 5, every Thursday at 3:30pm, from September 15 to December 8, 2016. At Tam High School, we teach middle school students in grades 6 to 9, every Wednesday at 3:30pm, from September 28 to November 16, 2016.
Students will create their own interactive art, in a playful way that makes learning more fun. Working collaboratively, they will make lights blink, sounds play and things move — bringing characters to life inside a cardboard ‘wonderbox.’

The structure of the Graphic overlay or control panel overlay is very simple. It is a single-layer structure of polycarbonate or polyester or an interface layer composed of adhesive. Graphic overlay uses are generally divided into two types: one is as a decorative Graphic overlay, so the product is more focused on whether to convey information such as the operation of the device, the company's logo, and product information. The second is the functional custom Graphic overlay, the product is more used for the circuit layer or the combination of silicone, and sometimes even combined with the shrapnel to form the shrapnel layer. Since Graphic overlay is the top-level structure of the product, it must be aesthetically pleasing and impressive. According to the application method of membrane overlay, Niceone-tech's most professional design suggestions are given. Here are some suggestions from Niceone-tech for Graphic overlay materials:
Whether the product is used outdoors or indoors, if it is used outdoors, the external factors that affect the life of the product, such as ultraviolet light, temperature, humidity, and dust, must be considered for the panel and adhesive tape materials. If Graphic Overlay is to be used outdoors for long periods of time and extreme high and low-temperature use, Niceone-tech panel recommends the Autotex material of XE series or HP92W, etc., and Niceone-tech adhesive tape recommends 3M. For indoor use, Niceone-tech can provide different options according to the customer's budget. The most common design for products without windows is Autotex F150 or V150 + 3M adhesive. With windows, Niceone-tech recommends using EBG + 3M adhesive paper. But Niceone-tech will respect the customer's decision, we will only give our professional advice for customers to choose from.
The choice of Graphic overlay material can be polycarbonate or polyester, whichever has its unique properties. From the perspective of the number of driving times, Niceone-tech will recommend Polyester material because it can be pressed repeatedly millions of times without breaking. The PC material can't meet this requirement relatively. Conversely, if customers only need an indicator panel and the cost is lower, Polycarbonate is a good choice.
Graphic overlay needs to be resistant to bacteria or anti-microbial, and the chemical properties are required to be stable. The AM series of Autotex materials is a good choice.
The feel of the control panel is sometimes one of the conditions considered. Materials include Velvet, Gloss, Matte, and another different touch, Autotex of F, V, and XE series is Velvet, Autotex of EBG series, HP92W and FR-60 Lexan is Gloss. Matte touch is EBA and HP-40Lexan as options.

Aesthetic Considerations Affecting Graphic Overlay Design:
Graphic overlay printing: Graphic overlay has Screen printing and digital printing. Screen printing colors generally have small errors, but the colors are not Fades or Gradients. Digital printing can be Fades or Gradients, but the color error is large.
Does Graphic overlay need to be embossed: embossed is generally divided into Rim Embossed, Pillow Embossed, and Dome Embossed. The logo or letters of the product also need to be convex, Niceone-tech will analyze whether it can be generated. At the same time, some products also need to hit blind spots.
The surface treatment of Graphic overlay includes 1. Glossy 2. Non-glare 3. Textured 4. Patterned 5. Metals (e.g. brushed aluminum, stainless steel)
The graphic overlay has an LCD window and an LED window. The window selection of LED is generally transparent white or transparent raw materials. LCD's windows are produced according to customer requirements. Generally speaking, the raw materials are transparent or silkscreen transparent colors, and the windows are also required to be scratch-resistant. I was very fortunate to have met an amazing seller and doll collector who was kind enough to offer me a rare and amazing treasure.
I have been a fan of Roko-Tan for a long time and never thought I would own one of my very own. Through my friend, I actually have two Roko-Tan dolls but one of them is a rare and gorgeous Prototype! This is a wedding gown that I believe is on the back of her box but was never released and my friend's Father got her from someone who worked for the company who made Roko-Tan! It is very delicate and has a few spots from age on the gown but she is one charming and sweet doll.

Bath time is always a messy affair for these guys! I found these guys from my regular sellers in China. Prototypes? Factory Errors? Who knows. All of them are wearing outfits from the Japanese range in the 1990s.
