Later in the day, we drove by once more to find that there were, in fact, some actual protestors. Sadly I cannot read any Thai, so if I hadn't already read the paper, I wouldn't have known what the protest was about.

Thousands of protesters marched through downtown Chicago on Sunday in one of the city's largest demonstrations in years, airing grievances about war, climate change and a wide range of other complaints as world leaders assembled for a NATO summit.

The protest, which for months had stirred worries about violence in the streets, drew together a broad assortment of participants, including peace activists joining with war veterans and people more focused on economic inequality.

Hundreds of protesters gathered late Sunday night near the Art Institute of Chicago as first lady Michelle Obama hosted a dinner for spouses of NATO leaders inside. At least 100 Chicago police officers in riot gear were also at the scene.

Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition organized a rally to protest several amendments targeting undocumented immigrants for discrimination.

Advocates for immigrants, affordable housing, and survivors of domestic violence gathered at the State House to oppose anti-immigrant amendments such as House amendment #575, "relative to securing public housing" (Rep. O'Connell) which would exclude many tax-paying immigrants from state public housing. Among those who would be deprived of housing are immigrant survivors of domestic violence who have not yet received immigration papers (many of whom are undocumented as a direct result of abuse), certain families who have fled persecution, and even many U.S. citizen children if not all family members have status.

At the close of the rally, the gathering was joined by members of the Boston Homeless Solidarity Committee. "We're happy to stand in solidarity with all of you," said Committee member Cleve Rae. "We don't need shelters; we need more housing for everybody."

Other groups participating in the event included the Chelsea Collaborative, the Brazilian Women's Group, the Irish International Immigrant Center, the Dominican Women's Group, Jane Doe, and the Boston Tenant's Coalition.

Diabolical: the teabaggers joined a protest consisting of local truckers, Latino farmers and even pot legalizers to create one large protest. But I sincerely doubt any one faction really knew what the other factions were on about.
