Despite rain and cold, around 50 protesters gathered by the Octavius Catto statue by Philadelphia City Hall on Dec. 9, for a rally and march marking the 43rd anniversary of the state’s unjust and illegal incarceration of Pennsylvania political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal.
Several speakers addressed that the struggle to free Mumia and other political prisoners coincides with the upcoming battle of progressive activists against the reactionary administration of Donald Trump, which threatens more state terrorism.
The demonstration marched a short distance to the offices of Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner where speakers called on the DA to do the right thing for Mumia by granting him long-denied freedom. They addressed the racist police, judicial and prosecutorial misconduct that resulted in Mumia’s incarceration, despite ample evidence of his innocence, and the unjust ruling in May 2023 by Common Pleas Court Judge Lucretia Clemons who refused to consider new evidence found in the case.
Protesters then took to the streets to march to 13th and Locust streets where Mumia was arrested and brutalized on Dec. 9, 1981, and unjustly accused of the murder of Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner.

Immigrants and their allies chanted as they filled the hallway outside Philadelphia City Council Jan. 29, and once inside, dozens testified for 'ICE OUT' legislation, which aims to limit ICE's operations within the city.
The legislation, presented to the City Council as people in the audience cheered and chanted, received support from 14 of the city's 17 councilmembers and includes several measures to protect citizens from ICE's activities.
This legislation prevents ICE agents from hiding their identities with masks and unmarked vehicles.
It prohibits ICE from using city-owned property for staging raids.
The legislation prohibits the city from collaborations with ICE on data and bans 287(g) agreements which allow police to act as ICE agents.
It prohibits city agencies from collaborating with ICE.
The bills also prevent city agencies from collecting citizenship or immigration status information or sharing personal data with ICE.
Also, the bills prohibit discrimination or denial of services based on citizenship or immigration status by the city, employers, housing providers, or private businesses.
The ICE OUT package also bars city employees from granting ICE access to city-owned spaces—such as libraries, shelters, health centers, and recreation centers—without a judicial warrant. The hearings were a significant step in the city's efforts to address concerns over ICE's operations and to promote public safety and trust.
The bills package will move to council committees for discussion before it could be voted on by City Council.
Then, if council approves the legislation, it would move to Mayor Cherelle Parker’s desk to be signed into law.
Glendale Unified posted information about what it teaches kids in schools at the following URL: www.gusd.net/Info
It's good info and goes into some detail. Basically, most of the policies it has in place address laws and its obligations to keep children safe and promote a positive learning environment. As a parent of children in Glendale schools I appreciate that the district has been nothing but forthcoming about the curriculum and takes its obligations to limit bullying seriously.
Most of the people protesting against the school district don't live in Glendale. They were holding up signs like "Defund LAUSD" and other such nonsense. Glendale Unified is GUSD. Even the guy quoted by LA Times and TV news doesn't have kids in the district - that, and his facts are almost entirely wrong. Meanwhile, most of the people milling about and showing support for the District are parents with children in its schools.
As with many protests, people looking to bash heads came. Based on the video that started the segment it looks like they succeeded. The people dressed in all black are anarchists. They aren't "defenders" of anybody as some news sources reported. They are there because they want to blow it all up - or at the very least get into fights - and have the most fun with far-right militants who have the same aim (but aren't as picky about who they bash, as long as it's "the other side"). I saw proud boys stickers/patches present so you get the idea.
