Veterans lead a procession to deliver flowers to the gates of the Quantico prison. “Pentagon Papers” whistleblower and former Marine Daniel Ellsberg is in the middle, in the black suit. Ellsberg and over 30 others were arrested for blocking the highway in an effort to call attention to Manning’s treatment and the government persecution of whistleblowers.

I was amazed at how it was near impossible to take photos of protesters without including porta-potties in the background.

Protester gathered at the Cambridge offices of drug giant Sanofi to protest the high price of insulin which the company manufactures. Two mothers tried to deliver the ashes of their two diabetic children who the women said died while rationing the drug to save money after losing their health insurance.

Antroinette Worsham of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Nicole Smith-Holt from Richfield, Minn., were joined by about 75 protesters. According to the Brookline-based Right Care Alliance, a patient advocacy coalition that organized the protest, Paris-based Sanofi is one of three insulin manufacturers that in recent years have marked up prices by as much as 5,000 percent.

The protesters stayed across the street while the two mothers attempted to walk through the Memorial Drive parking lot with small containers holding the ashes, but company security officials ordered them off the property, said Aaron Toleos, a spokesman for Right Care. Toleos said police on the scene told the women that “if you choose not to leave, you will be arrested.”

In these photos, taken in Johannesburg in 2012, SAMWU had been demonstrating against tolling of the countries roads and the use of labour broking. The march had been termed the mother of all protest actions. The one day march had been successful and resulted in the Government temporarily halting the introduction of road tolling and significant in-roads in discussions aimed at bringing an end to labour broking.

This afternoon I decided to go out and take some photos. Just as I was about to ride out of the city, I looked behind me and saw a large group of people protesting about something. I decided to abandon my initial project for the day and follow the group instead.

From the pamphlets being distributed by the protesters, and word of mouth, I determined that this was essentially a protest about an eviction. There is a house in the centre of Leiden that, for the past 40 years, has been occupied by squatters. During the 40 years they have been there, the building became somewhat of a cultural centre. Just recently, the local Council decided to evict them: and today they peacefully expressed their objection to the Council's proposal.

I started following the protest from the intersection of the Hooigracht and Nieuwe Rijn, and followed them down Nieuwe Rijn to the Herengracht. From the Herengracht, they turned left along Oude Rijn and into the Haarlemmerstraat. From the Haarlemmerstraat, they travelled up to the Prinsessekade and onto the Breestraat. While travelling down the Breestraat, they stopped and made a point outside the Town Hall, before making their way back to Hooglandse Kerkgracht and the building in question.

This man was probably one of the oldest involved in the demonstration.

Needless to say, I'm glad that I charged my camera and decided to head out... otherwise I would have missed this completely!

Comments are, of course, welcomed!
