The whole scene started winding down around Maghrib time, as those who chose to move towards the embassy went back to the peaceful protests that were being held at the main Square (in front of the Umar Makram masjid).
I think he was trying to protest Wall Street, but the protest was in down town L.A. maybe he didn't want to leave the comfort of his Santa Monica pad.
