The lead-up to Saturdays protests against the TPPA shows the commitment of people across the country to send a message that the government cant ignore, said ItsOurFuture spokesperson Edward Miller.Nationwide day of action against TPPA: “Ignore us at your peril” government warned

“The lead-up to Saturday’s protests against the TPPA shows the commitment of people across the country to send a message that the government can’t ignore”, said ItsOurFuture spokesperson Edward Miller.

A video shows young activists publicising Saturday’s nationwide protests with footage from Auckland, Wellington, Dunedin, Christchurch, and Nelson.

Action in the 22 centres starts at 10am in Raglan and many of the larger centre marches begin at 1pm, including Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

“People have been incredibly creative”, Miller said. “In Christchurch a giant plain-packaged cigarette packet will be marching in the crowd, while Auckland will be led by an enormous Trojan Horse, locked in a tug-of-war between major commercial interests and activist communities.”

“Around the country everyday kiwis will be photographed for a virtual campaign with signs saying ‘I am a ___________ and I say #TPPANoDeal.’ Already this campaign has been very popular.”

“Trade minister Tim Groser needs to recognise that people don’t buy the ‘trust me’ line. They want to be listened to when they say they don’t want the TPPA. And they deserve to be listened to.”

OTTAWA, CANADA- On November 5th, 2015, 38 people from all over Canada came to Ottawa to give the new Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, a #ClimateWelcome. Today, youth, parents, grandparents and leaders from the climate justice movement brought the Prime Minister “gifts”: scientific studies, Indigenous treaties, and economic reports all confirming that tar sands needs to stay in the ground. These gifts were received by the assistant to the Prime Minister!

#ClimateWelcome is a four day action, engaging hundreds of people in a series of sit-ins in front of the Prime Minister's house, in Ottawa, Canada.

The police tactics of forcing the blockaders to block the main road rather than the access road has resulted in a backlash of public opinion against the blockaders. On our fitst day alone, a counter-protest of around 100-120 locals, of whom around a third were kids, gathered to express their annoyance at being unable to get to work/school/shopping/doctors/wherever. Most of them were actually very understanding when i was there and almost all agreed that the missiles should go.

unfortunately after i left on an errand the protest apparently turned a bit nasty and aggressive, and several members of our group were a bit shaken.

WHY WE MARCHED

Austerity isn’t working

Our country faces long-term economic problems. But our political leaders have failed to face up to them.

For the next five years or more, unless policies change the economy will not grow, incomes will not rise, and there will be almost no new jobs.

If the government keeps on with big spending cuts and austerity we face a lost decade. Even on their own terms government policies are failing. To close the deficit we need a healthy growing economy that generates tax income. But austerity has led to a vicious circle of decline.

Instead of just letting the banks go back to business and bonuses as usual, we need policies that promote new and old industries.

This new approach would create jobs, especially for young people.

It would encourage companies to raise average pay, penalise big bonuses and invest in training and new industries. It would crack down on tax evasion by big companies and the super-rich. It would tackle the growing inequality between the super-rich and everyone else.

Rather than deep, rapid spending cuts, we need to reverse our decline and build an economy that works for ordinary families.

We need a future that works. Will you join us?
