Finally I have witnessed the aurora properly in Scotland after months watching the conditions closely. It was an amazing sight, although all the action was very close to the horizon. This was taken around midnight near Dunecht, by Aberdeen.

Friday, 10 June 2022: our temperature is 21°C (windchill 21°C) around 12:30 pm. Sunrise was at 5:22 am, and sunset is at 9:49 pm. A lovely, sunny, blue-sky day.

A landscaper was supposed to come sometime today, to fix a few places in my backyard which were not done properly months ago. Just had a phone call letting me know that a number of their staff are sick, so someone will come next week, on Monday. Unfortunate, as today was the last nice day before 4 days of rain, so I could have gone out for the day. Can't decide whether to go for a short drive this afternoon - might just go to my usual area, which is where I went yesterday, and took the five photos I am posting..

I'm not getting much variety in the bird species I am seeing, but I still enjoy photographing the ones I do see. This afternoon, 10 June 2022, I decided that I would go for a drive, more or less repeating the drives I have been doing recently. Saw a Bobolink for the third time this spring, though still only from a distance. The Mountain Bluebirds are all so busy gathering insects for their babies. Such a special time of year.

Corsica / Corse - Désert des Agriates

Sentier du littoral / Coast Path / Küstenweg - Torre di Mortella

On the way from Saint-Florent to Plage du Loto.

Auf dem Weg von Saint-Florent zum Plage du Loto.

The Tower of Mortella (Corsican: Torra di Mortella) is a ruined Genoese tower on Corsica, located on the coast near Punta Mortella (Myrtle Point) in the commune of Saint-Florent, Haute-Corse. It was a progenitor of the numerous Martello towers the British built in the 19th century throughout their empire.

The Italian architect Giovan Giacomo Paleari Fratino designed the Tour de Mortella and Colonel Giorgio Doria directed the construction between 1563 and 1564. It was one of a series of coastal defences constructed by the Republic of Genoa between 1530 and 1620 to repulse attacks by Barbary pirates.

On 7 February 1794, two British warships, HMS Fortitude (74 guns) and HMS Juno (32 guns), unsuccessfully attacked the tower at Mortella Point; the tower eventually fell to land-based forces under Major-General David Dundas and Lieutenant-General John Moore after two days of heavy fighting.

Late in the previous year, the tower's French defenders had abandoned the tower after HMS Lowestoffe (32 guns) had fired two broadsides at it. Then the French were easily able to dislodge the garrison of Corsican patriots that had replaced them. Still, the British were impressed by the effectiveness of the tower when properly supplied and defended and copied the design. However, they misspelled the name as "Martello" rather than "Mortella". When the British withdrew from Corsica in 1796, they blew up the tower, leaving it in an unusable state.

The ruined tower was listed as one of the official Historical Monuments of France in 1991. The database incorrectly gives the date of construction as 1553–1554. This earlier date is when Spanish and Genoese troops led by Admiral Andrea Doria besieged the French forces occupying the port of Saint-Florent after the Franco-Turkish invasion of the island.

Since 1980 the French government agency the Conservatoire du littoral has owned and maintained the site. The Conservatoire plans to purchase 6,663 hectares (16,460 acres) of the surrounding coastline and as of 2017 had acquired 5,935 hectares (14,670 acres).

Un chaînon secondaire au nord, indépendant de l'axe principal du massif de Tenda, délimite une région bien individualisée et non visible depuis la route départementale 81. Les rhyolites et les tufs donnent des formes arrondies au relief de la montagne située dans le désert des Agriates et s'étendant de la Cima d'Ifana (479 m) jusqu'à Bocca di Sordali (198 m). La majeure partie, celle occidentale, est en zone protégée;

A new photograph, something more serious, accompanied by a text that gives more to the imagination to the history of what happens. SL himself made it difficult for me to put the pose properly.

"Illuminated windows without curious glances and damp streets without the sounds of footsteps, the ears between the walls assumed that they must be firecrackers, that silhouette descended to the ground like a graceful petal of a rose, staining red on that lonely ground, 7 new orifices enhanced her new inanimate existence, that princess without a crown met her destiny, and not only had I the fortune to appreciate it with my eyes, but also the blessing of making it come true.

A red carpet opened around her her body, giving way to her, an indication that she had accepted me so that I would protect her, an honor to open me between curtains of smoke and dust, kneels next to her, taking her soft hand and still hot. Soft steps of my fingers across her face, comforting her, Her grace, her beauty that conquers me so much I will make her eternal, her heart will no longer disturb her holy silence, she will always be by my side like each of her new sisters, Love will never will be missing "

Or, as it was properly called, the Bristol Britannia.

Even before the Second World War ended, Britain was planning a number of airliners it could build once peacetime was achieved. Amongst these was a type that could serve the so-called 'Empire Routes' that involved multiple destinations. In time, the Britannia was chosen for this role, but its development was delayed and by the time it entered service in 1957, jet aircraft were soon to become available.

Beyond BOAC and the RAF, it achieved relatively few sales, but attracted interest for airlines in the U.S. which could not be converted into sales as the UK lacked the capacity for speedy delivery. But I do wonder if buying from overseas would have been problematical too.

In its later years, it was well known in the fleets of British Eagle and Monarch, as well as Britannia, an airline that had previously been known as Euravia.

Britannia 312 G-AOVT is displayed at Duxford in Monarch livery. The aircraft forms part of the British Airliner Collection, in the hands of the Duxford Aviation Society at the Cambridgeshire airfield.

If this caution tape were placed properly, it would be over my MOUTH! There's a reason my nick name really is Trouble.

In any case, there's no long description for this one (sorry Peanuts) I'm just running out of ideas for 365 and thought this would work. I'd really like to get my hands on some bio-hazard tape... hmmmmm...

On second thought... here's one of my favorite songs that goes quite well with this!!

Close up candid street photography from Glasgow, Scotland. A little too close as my lens failed to focus properly and his leading eye is a little soft in 1:1 view but I love the shot anyway. Enjoy!

Random downpour in Boise. A couple of times a year we'll get one of these where the skies just open up. Seemed like a good thing to watch through a window my 10-year old knew how to properly enjoy it ;) I didn't have a picture yet for the day and didn't dare pass it up!

Viewed from below, on the platform where you can properly appreciate Hell's Mouth, this is what the place where they sell souvenirs looks like.

Cascais - Portugal

We would have needed another day if we'd wanted to go and explore the area properly, but it was good to see the River Cuckmere stationary, rather than from a moving vehicle (you can see the A259 road in the distance!)

In preparation for my visit this year, a quick visit to the archives for this 2010 image of the F22 Raptor at the Royal International Air Tattoo.

This is a big crop from a long way away, on an old camera. There, that's the excuses out of the way...

To celebrate my recent promotion at work, and because I believe I'm worth it, I'm going to do RIAT properly this year and have just booked my FRIAT tickets (Mach 3). It'll be my first time in the FRIAT enclosure so I'm really looking forward to it!

About three months ago, my sister discovered this beautiful 1955 Dodge Jobline pick-up truck in a local Charleston newspaper. Knowing how much I'd always dreamed of owning a 1950's red pick-up, she rang to tell me about the listing and I located it online. We talked about how beautiful it was and of all the things we'd love to do with the truck, but the price was simply too high and over time, we soon forgot about her.

Then, about two weeks ago, our Granny passed away and I found myself back in S.C. for her burial. One day shortly after, with emotions still at an all-time high, my sister and I decided we would go kayaking where our Granny and Grandpa were born and raised. It would've been a great trip, except none of the weather forecasters had predicted the severe thunderstorms that ensued and we quickly found ourselves in need of alternative plans. What better to do than shop, right?

With our trip canceled, we found ourselves riding around Mt. Pleasant with a ridiculously large two-person kayak on our roof and "nothing" to do. I mentioned thinking it would be nice to go back and check out this 1960's “Endless Summer” type canary yellow station wagon we’d passed the day before, so we headed to the garage where it was parked. After perusing a wide array of vintage vehicles, we made out way to the garage and struck up a conversation with the mechanics. We inquired about some of the vintage vehicles and mentioned we’d found a red 1950’s red pick-up a few months back and asked if they’d ever seen one. They mentioned knowing of both a black and a white 1950's truck, but no red one. As the conversation neared the ½ hour mark, one of the mechanics remembered he’d seen a red 1950’s pick-up parked at a law firm not far from the shop. As soon as he said this I thought (and my sister claims I said out loud), “That’s it!”.

After getting a few other places / people’s names who might know where to find a 1950’s pick-up, we took our chances and headed to see the truck the mechanic had mentioned seeing "a while back". We had nothing to lose by looking. As soon as we saw the vehicle and drove around the back-end, I knew it was the same one my sister had found three months prior. On the driver’s door window hung a sign advertising a slashed price and a phone number. After taking some photos and checking out the vehicle, my sister rang the listed number. We’d both just assumed the truck belonged to a man, so when a woman answered, she was surprised. After speaking for a few minutes, it became clear the voice at the other end was not going to “hand the phone over” (to a man). So, my sister asked, "Are you the owner?", to which the woman replied, "Yes!".

Needless to say, I think we were all a little surprised. The owner - Christine - explained she'd moved to Charleston from NYC to get into the bakery business and had bought the truck to "pick up men" – yes, that’s why she’d gotten it. At this juncture, my sister looked like she'd seen a ghost. There were several reasons for this "ook". One being, she’d been born in NY and two, her sister (that'd be me) currently lives there. Thirdly, she'd been trying to figure out how to transition out of a career in radio and was thinking of starting a baking business! I'm not kidding. When she asked Christine if owning the truck had indeed helped her meet any men, she said it hadn't, but that the truck had been rented quite a few times for photo shoots and commercials. Gears in our heads quickly began turning. And Christine was so happy that women were calling about the truck because she specifically wanted to sell the truck to a female. She told us to go into the offices and get the keys to go for a spin.

She’d also mentioned the mechanic who’d worked on the truck was close by and told us where to find his garage. After going in and speaking with a lovely woman who had some problem locating the keys, we went back outside to wait. After a few minutes, the keys arrived and the girl mentioned if we could wait, that the mechanic who’d worked on the vehicle would be coming by to pick both she and her Mum in a few minutes. Huh? Why?!? Because the mechanic was her father! When we heard this, it was like a bolt of lightening had struck. How was it possible the mechanic we’d just been told about and whom we were going to go visit would be coming to us? Things were just getting too weird, so, of course, we waited. It seemed kizmit was taking over at this juncture.

It had been a while since I’d driven a standard, though it’s been my main transmission for the majority of my driving years, so I wasn’t too worried. And, my sister had learned how to drive a standard shift on a tractor on someone’s farm, so between the two of us, we thought we’d be okay. Not long after, the mechanic arrived. If seemed the truck hadn’t been started in a while, so he had to jump-start her and we all piled in. He took us to a nearby car park and we drove around back to an empty area. My sister decided to go first and we all had a really good laugh. Next, it was my turn and after the mechanic properly explained the H-gear pattern, I did an so-so job with the ½ ton, no power steering, no power breaks slant V6 badass – though this isn’t to say it wasn’t nerve-racking as hell! Not only was she extremely difficult to maneuver, but somehow driving her made one’s hands completely black and at some point, we’d all touched our faces and had black marks all over ourselves and our clothing. We looked like Al Jolsen in his black-face – except, in reverse!

After returning to the law firm, we said we’d be back in a few days. We spent a day trying to figure out how we could make getting this truck happen and returned to take (what we’d already named) “Big Red” to a few mechanics shops and restoration experts the following day. Before getting out on crowded main roads, we decided to get some more practice driving the truck and so, after some quick cleaning of the windows and interior, we headed back to that nearby car park.

It’s a good thing my sister had learned to drive on a tractor, because on this particular 97degree afternoon, “Big Red” was akin to driving around in a 1/2 ton tractor. Driving Red was roughly the equivalent to taking part in a triathlon in 105 degree temperatures. Because she’s so hard to drive, on one occasion, I had to grab the giant wheel and help my sister make a turn! Yes, it took two of us and we’re both over 5”10, with plenty of muscle. Oh how I was beginning to appreciate power steering!

Jerking in-and-out-of all three gears, my sister finally stalled Big Red for a second time - sending us to a halting stop. Sweating and dirty, she screamed out in frustration, “Oh my God, I can't do this! We’re crazy! This is never going to work!”. Searching for the inspirational words an older sibling is supposed to have at the ready, I turned my head and spotted this white big rig parked just beside us and nearly fainted. For, it was a Cardinal line truck with no more than two cardinal emblems – one on the cab and one on the trailer - emblazoned upon it.

You see, our Grandfather, who had died when we were very small was a country boy (related to Swamp Fox - yeah!) and his favorite bird was the cardinal. We know anytime one crosses our paths, to pay close attention. Gasping, I directed her attention right toward the “cardinal spotting” and we both nearly lost it. Tears welled up in both our eyes. My sister then took a deep breath and said, “Did you see the pair of cardinals fly past us as we drove back here?”. I hadn't and said so, but quickly grabbed my camera to capture the rig carrying the cardinal message from our Gran.

While neither said so, in that moment, I think we both knew we'd buy the 1955 Dodge- even before we took her to get checked out. Can't go against the elders, right? We offered nearly half the original price and Christine accepted. So, if for any reason, you’re in need of a classic 1955 Dodge pick up truck in fire engine red, you know who to contact!

The Super moon - not the sharpest or the closet, but pretty moody. unfortunately due to thick clouds the moon only showed up 45 minutes later than usual therefore its oversize perspective hasn't been attained properly.

Goldcrest (Regulus regulus) in the Alver Valley Country Park just before it started to rain properly! According to the RSPB "With the firecrest, the goldcrest is the UK's smallest bird. They're dull greyish-green with a pale belly and a black and yellow stripe on their heads, which has an orange centre in males. Their thin beak is ideally suited for picking insects out from between pine needles."

The Caldon Canal, (or more properly, the Caldon Branch of the Trent & Mersey Canal) opened in 1779, runs 18 miles from Etruria, in Stoke-on-Trent where it leaves the Trent and Mersey Canal at the summit level, to Froghall, Staffordshire. The canal has 17 locks and the 69-metre long Froghall Tunnel. The canal was built to carry limestone for the iron industry and flints for the pottery industry. It is still steeped in history, with fascinating industrial buildings visible along the Stoke section. Further along, you may see a steam train chugging along where the Churnet Valley Railway passes close to the canal. We were lucky enough to see the train puffing steam in the station. This photo was taken at the terminus of the Caldon Canal at Froghall Wharf, it was a loading area for Limestone from Caldon Low quarry and wagons came and transferred their loads to the boats. This wharf looks to be a home now and looked lovely in the setting.

While looking for airlines that fly out of Atlanta Georgia, I found one called Hooters Air!

Idiot repost, failure to properly understand publish on Lightroom classic!

It's summertime already, but still: here's how to pack properly for the summer holiday this year.

The manual:

1. First of all, put a tin coffin on the roof of your car, so that you'll be stored properly in case you croak under the hot summer sun.

2. Next, make sure that you have plenty of backup vehicles on top of the tin coffin, just in case your car breaks down. And remember to keep backups for the backups handy, as well.

3. Always bring good mood with you. Therefore it is highly recommended to install a toy synthesizer directly on your windshield on top of the windshield wipers. Screw the wipers - it'll be hot and sunny anyway!

4. You mustn't starve, so bring a little bag with 5 huge potatoes with you. In case of an emergency, you can fry your chips directly on the highway.

5. Stay in touch with the world, therefore always bring a two-way radio (CB station) with you. Radio waves never fail and they never get bad coverage.

6. In case the sea dries out when you get there, bring along the biggest satellite dish you can get your hands on, just so that you can have a decent bath in it anyway. In this case, don't forget to pray for the rain well in advance!

7. For a decent airconditioning, simply leave the trunk open before you start your journey.

8. Go to the nearest dump-site and stuff the inside of your car so thoroughly with as much junk as you can get. This way you'll be safely jammed between the steering wheel and the back of your seat, so you won't need neither the airbags nor the safety belt, because you won't be able to move anyway.

9. Make sure your back suspension is neatly broken, so that your car sits very aerodynamically on the ground. This way you don't have to worry about the breaks even on the steepest hill.

10. Have lots of fun, since a safe journey is guaranteed in any case!

Properly trying out the Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mk II in the snowy Lakes this weekend. Wandered up Cat Bells for sunset and caught some lovely colour above Causey Pike.

Hope everyone is enjoying the cold(er) snap!

The Golden Eagle has gold toned feathers on the back of her neck and throughout her body. Very beautiful coloring! This Golden Eagle has been injured and brought to the Rehabilitation Center. She has somewhat recovered but will stay at the Center for safety’s sake. Also, she helps educate the public on the dangers Eagles now face, mainly lead poisoning. After a hunter shoots and kills a deer, for example, whatever is leftover from gutting the deer is left in the open. These remains have lead in it from the bullets. Eagles love a fresh kill and ingest the lead, the die a hard death as it slowly poisons them to death. Hunters! Please bury those remains or else take it with you and discard properly. We’ve just brought back these majestic birds from the brink of extinction thanks to pesticides such as DDT. At one time Pennsylvania only had 2 eagles, now we have over 300 nesting sites! So many that the Game Commission has stopped counting them. Now we must make hunters aware of lead poisoning killing these birds off. We can’t lose them again!

ENG: New Year's greetings!

Although this year again had to dance properly out of line, but I hope that I can see you even with mask on the face and freshly disinfected hands in the new year 2022 Wiedersehen or at least hear a few soothing words from you.

I also hope that you have survived the Christmas holidays as well as the past year mentally and healthwise well and wish you for the new year a lot of strength, best health, great friends and a family, which one can also endure.

In this sense, I wish you a happy new year and all the best with this New Year's greeting!

Oh well! If you never take time, you can't have time!

Ach so!

More properly, but less often, called a line gauge, the pica pole is used to measure type forms; it's a specialized ruler. Mine gives measurements in picas, agates, and inches. Approximately 6 picas to the inch, 12 points to the pica, 72.27 points to the inch. Unless you're using digital type then exactly 72 points to the inch. An agate is 5.5 points.

Anyway here is my pica pole on top of some type I recently printed: Shakespeare's Sonnet 18.

News from the Far Side:

*I still can't see properly. I'll see a neurologist when I can get in. I don't have much hope that things will change. but I'm still standing. mostly.

*I had to get hearing aids, there's a loss in both ears. they should arrive next week. the cost of mine was about the same as a down payment on a million-dollar house would be. but they are pink.

*I'm listening to the wind. we are supposed to get tons of rain, but they've been telling us that for weeks. it's drizzling right now.

*I signed up for French lessons on both Babbel and Duolingo. I'm flunking. but tomorrow is another jour.

*eye cream does not erase under-eye bags. no buts about it.

*I read a lot, two or three books a week. but it's hard when I really can't see.

*my social calendar is full. with dr. appointments. but, maybe it'll get better.

we can only hope.

and there is yet another war, in Israel and the Gaza strip. People in Gaza need help, too.

I know many of us are overburdened with trying to help....do your best.

A properly painted classic blue and gold GP38-2 brings Connecticut Southern CSO-4 across its namesake river with Kings Island in the background. Taken on October 20, 2017.

Finally, a panorama that stitched together properly. I think I have trouble because I'm always doing panos with a super wide angle lens (which is a lot harder to stitch together than one done with a telephoto). I would have cropped the empty right sky lower a bit but I didn't want to lose the clouds on the left side.

This is a shot of some fog following a river twisting through the autumn tree covered hills. Luck wasn't in my favour during my QC trip, either in terms of weather or my route, but I was able to get some nice shots even though I didn't get too many epic fall shots. This was a morning on the Gaspé peninsula when things came together; I had checked the viewpoint at sunset and knew it would be best in the morning, and then I got some fog and the sun also broke through a bit.

The boy in this photo is obviously underage for this kind of work.

Presidential Decree No. 603 or the Child and Youth Welfare Code states that children below 16 years of age are allowed to work only if they perform light work, which is not harmful to their safety, health or normal development and which is not prejudicial to their studies.

Child labor is one of the major problems in the Philippines. This is very rampant.

We have the law, but we failed to implement it.

This exposure was about 1 second. I love this waterfall. The water flows just enough to make a beautiful veil if exposed properly.

A puffin on final approach to land on Skomer with it's load of sand eels for it's chicks. I know it isn't pin-sharp, but it was SO difficult to catch them properly in-flight, they are incredibly fast
