Did you know the Film Photography Project provides refurbished and tested vintage film cameras free-of-charge to schools and not-for-profit organizations with film programs nationwide? When we started the program nearly a decade ago, we had no idea the demand would continue – much less grow! More and more educational and arts organizations are adding a film component to their photography courses, and the FPP is here for them. In 2024 alone, we’ve supplied over 300 working vintage cameras to High School, College and Arts Programs photography programs including Pickerington High School Central Ohio / California High School in San Ramon CA, Columbia University / BIPA grant program in NYC, ProPhound Kids Inc., RVCC Arts and Desgin in Branchburg NJ, Edgerton Jr. Sr. High School in Edgerton OH, Southeastern School District in Chillicothe OH and Woodrow Wilson High School in Los Angeles CA among others. U.S. Army Africa conducted a familiarization visit for two Rwandan military medical soldiers at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Landstuhl, Germany, Nov. 1-4.
Lt. Jacques Twagirayezu and Lt. Col. Marc Sebaganji of the Rwanda Defense Forces toured the U.S. Army Medical Department’s premiere European facility to observe American military medicine at work, and to bring their insights home for consideration and adaptation for the benefit of their land forces.
“We basically visited with the staff of the Trauma Department, took tours of the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) and operating rooms — the noncritical care wing — as well as the physical therapy department,” said Maj. Kristin E. Agresta, responsible for Force Health Protection in USARAF’s Command Surgeon Section.
“We were focused on the Wounded Warrior Program, meaning the movement of patients from point of injury through the military medical system back to the United States. The emphasis for these guys was on understanding our Level 1-3 care: buddy aid/medic aid at point of injury; battalion aid station and the field hospitals,” she said.
“I know they were very impressed with the organization of the system and the obvious teamwork that was displayed as they interacted and observed the staff. Lt. Col. Sebaganji mentioned this several times,” Agresta said.
“Lt. Twagirayezu, who is a physical therapist, enjoyed the opportunity to see the physical therapy wing. He was impressed with the equipment and was able to compare methods of treatment for injuries with the Chief of the Physical Therapy/Occupational Therapy Department,” she said.

I grew up as a metal baby in the late 80s/early 90s, and I’ve never lost my taste for the hard stuff. The combination of two of my great loves, heavy metal and computer programming, in one of my favorite mediums, the t-shirt, makes this an instant favorite.
Fun fact: Although not widely known, corpse paint has been worn by computer programmers as early as the late 1960s. It’s rumored that Kim Petersen, better known as King Diamond, was first exposed to corpse paint by some LISP developers who were attending a mathematics conference in Denmark in the early 1970s.
Pro-tip: While real programmers wear do wear corpsepaint, real programmers do not wear nail studded gauntlets. They’re a major contributing factor in repetitive stress injuries.

Return to the Western world! We spend one month in Croatia, and sample the joys of Central Europe by the Adriatic Sea.
Zagreb is thoroughly modern and beautiful, with a livelier local crowd, fresh markets, and more hidden gems than Prague or Budapest.
The Plitvice Lakes are one of the most awesome national parks we have visited so far.
Dubrovnik is like stepping back into the 1400s, all rocky hillside, stone streets, towering city walls, and Mediterranean blue sea.
Split is Croatia's second city, perched on the sea and built around the Roman ruins of Diocletian's Palace. We would love to come back here.

4 March 2014. Tawila: Women and their children wait to be attended in a food distribution center in the Rwanda camp for internally displaced people (IDP) in Tawila, North Darfur.
More than 8,000 women and children living in the camp benefit from two nutrition programs run by the World Food Programme (WFP) in the camp. One is Targeted Supplementary Feeding Programme, which is designed to treat moderate acute malnutrition among children under the age of five and pregnant and nursing women. The other is Integrated Blanket Supplementary Feeding Programme meant to prevent malnutrition among children under the age of three. Through both programs, women learn to prepare highly nutritious food by combining corn soya blend with sugar and oil or by using local ingredients such as lentils and cereals. The women also learn basic child care practices that prevent infection and sickness among their children.

The Fall 2010 Student Hackathon brought in hundreds of students from 30 universities to NYU's Courant Institute for 24 hours of creative hacking on New York City startups' APIs.
Selected startups presented their technologies at the beginning of the event, and students formed groups to brainstorm and begin coding on their ideas. Many students worked into the night, foregoing sleep to fulfill their visions.
On Sunday afternoon students presented their projects to an audience including a judging panel, which selected the final winners.
hackNY hosts hackathons one each semester, as well as a Summer Fellows Program, which pairs quantitative and computational students with startups which can demonstrate a strong mentoring environment, a problem for a student to work on, a person to mentor them, and a place for them to work. Startups selected to host a student are expected to compensate student Fellows. Students enjoy free housing together and a pedagogical lecture series to introduce them to the ins and outs of joining and founding a startup.

if you're hemming and hawing over where to put your wedding money, just remember this picture if you're considering selling the farm for things like wedding programs...
if you're opting not to make your own invitations, one piece of advice i found was to get one fancy set for a keepsake [if you ask, some folks will do the proof in the fancy stuff], then do the rest in a more cost-effective manner. eg. get one letterpressed or engraved invitation and have the rest thermographed or flat printed. the (approximate) 50% savings are staggering and just as nice.
we designed our programs, had them printed up at the local print shop, then gathered a trusty sweatshop to assemble them. i think the total cost of printing and cutting 100 programs in half was around... $8? i checked out a DIY wedding website for ideas on how to do them, and if i remember correctly, they were charging around $2.50 per program--the package included the two pieces of fancy paper with the program info on them and a wood stick to glue in the middle, but you still had to assemble them yourself.
pretty much, no matter how gorgeous the majority of paper goods you cash out on may be, they're going to end up in the recycle bin.
The recorded high-temperature yesterday was 89℉. The only thing hotter? Standing next to the kiln during the Raku firing near the E/F parking lot. Students in the ceramics program, a few art program alumni, and art program faculty members traditionally host this at the end of the semester.

Sanad’s mother reads to him in Jordan as part of an effort called Drive to Read (DTR). Funded by USAID for three years, the program aimed to foster a love for reading and build a reading culture among the children of Jordan. DTR is a mobile library which takes educational and cultural activities into East Amman and Zarqa neighborhoods, where large concentrations of disadvantaged people live. Each bookmobile – one in East Amman and another one in Zarqa – is equipped with over 2,000 Arabic- and English-language books and acts as a magnet for families in search of interesting and fun activities to do.
