Sheri Gibe wins drawing for one of the new Red Cross Fundamental Principles T-Shirts. Gretchen Smith did the honors during the new volunteer orientation class held at the Springfield MO office on Saturday. Gretchen says the Red Cross was there for her family during a blizzard in 2005 and that she is ready to give back to her community and be there for others in need. Congrats Sheri and welcome Gretchen! (Photo by Perry Elkins, Red Cross Volunteer.)

•Squash and Stretch

Squash and Stretch is the most important principle that is vital to master over the other principles. The idea of Squash and Stretch is to give an impression of weight and volume to a character as it walks and moves. Furthermore, the volume of the character should be equivalent during the course of the animation.

•Staging

Staging is basically the setting around the character whilst the animation is taking place. It all depends on how the cameras are set up and how it will move to make the audience look in certain places. Different shots are important to consider here as well such as extreme close up, long shot, medium shot etc. The character and the setting should work together in order to reduce confusion. Also there shouldn’t be too many things that are happening at the same time whereas this can also confuse the audience and make the audience not see sense of the animation.

•Anticipation

Anticipation is very important during an animation too. This helps the audience to determine that some sort of action is going to take place. For example, if the character is going to jump or make a sudden movement they should be prepared to make the animation more interesting. This gives the character real life features and it personifies the character because it is given real human characteristics.

•Straight Ahead & Pose to Pose

Straight Ahead is basically using the drawing and moving the animation frame by frame. With Straight Ahead it is easy to lose proportion and size in the animation because it is just following the drawing. However it is an advantage when the animator wants to create a scene with sudden movements and a lot of action. Pose to Pose however is the opposite. This is where the drawings are done by the animator themselves drawing out each pose in the animation. Personally I feel this is better than Straight Ahead because it is easier to show more character emotion and gives the audience a better feel of what is happening in the animation. Furthermore unlike Straight Ahead, this controls the proportion and size which makes a better animation.

•Follow Through & Overlapping

Basically, this is how the main parts of the body move first and other parts catch up to it after a few frames such as the characters clothes or the characters body and legs, both parts of the arms etc. Overlapping is if the direction the character is going in is changed, the hair for instance would go with the character as soon as it changes. It would catch up a few frames later to make it look more realistic. Follow through on the other hand is basically when the character has come to a standstill, not everything will be stopped together. Certain parts of the characters clothing or body parts would take time to stop and wouldn’t stop all at once.

•Slow In & Slow Out

Slow in & Slow Out is basically how quick or slow the character moves. This is used to make the animation look more real and life like. This is a good principle to use because it gives the more real feeling to the animation and makes it look a lot smoother.

•ARCS

Arcs are used in animations to make the animation look more realistic and more interesting to watch. They are used to make movements more smooth and accurate rather than stiff movements which aren’t life like for a human. For example, when a character moves their arm, the hand naturally follows with fingers moving a little, also when a character moves their head the eyes follow naturally moving in the same direction as the head.

•Secondary Action

Secondary action is basically more than one thing moving at once to make the animation look believable. In addition, it would look less realistic if one thing was moving in the animation only such as if the legs were walking without the body or the arms following.

•Timing

Timing is a very important factor throughout animation. Just by adding different times into the animation with a few key frames apart some more than others, it can add a whole lot more emotion and give the animation more feeling. It is easy to change the timing by manipulating them in the key frames also by using the graph editor which allows you to manipulate the key frames to make them longer or shorter or even to move or rotate or scale certain parts at certain times.

•Exaggeration

Exaggeration is not only to do with movements or action within an animation. It is also to do with exaggeration on facial features e.g. eye movements, mouth movements, nose twitching etc. If exaggeration is used in a walk cycle or an arm swing it can add much more emphasis to the animation and can make it look much more realistic.

•Solid Drawings

Solid Drawing is very important in animation because if the animator has grasped the concept of how the body is formed and the anatomical side of the body it will make the modelling and the rigging much more detailed and enhanced. Therefore it is necessary to know how the body is formed and joint together. It would be a good idea to practise drawings and getting to know the body inside out including the skeleton and the muscles and the body itself.

•Appeal

Every single character in animation has a certain appeal. This could be a heroic appeal or a villain appeal. No character in animation doesn’t have no appeal at all. All of the principles come in tide with Appeal because if one of them isn’t done correctly and stands out, it will give the animation less appeal and realism to the audience.

4 Principles by Which We Christians Easily Interact With Others

By Wang Jing

Interacting with others is a profound lesson for everyone, and Christians are no exception. We all want to easily handle the interpersonal relationships well. Now I would like to share with you four principles of practice.

First, in our interactions with others we shouldn’t follow our emotions or preferences, but should treat others in accordance with the principles of truth.

In our interactions with others, we always treat them based on individual preferences. When we meet someone whose character, temper and life habits are in line with our desires, we will be willing to get close to him, and think whatever he says or does is right. Even if he raises our deficiencies with us, we will be willing to accept. However, when we meet those who are not after our hearts in all aspects, we will discriminate against and shun them; we will be unwilling to accept or obey the suggestions they give us even when we know that they are right. Such are the manifestations of acting on our own emotion and preferences. There are no principles of truth in our interacting with others this way, and so our relationships with others will fall apart at any moment because of temporary displeasure. This shows that interacting with others based on emotion and preferences can only bring us constant distress and that the relationships won’t last long; moreover, it is at odds with the Lord’s will. Sermons and Fellowship on Entry Into Life said, “There are some people who couldn’t get along with anyone when they cooperate with brothers and sisters. They don’t have a normal relationship with other people. They have only hatred instead of love. They are always close to this one, but not that one; they always suppress this one, but rope in that one. So they don’t maintain normal relationships with others.” “A person who genuinely loves the truth has a hallmark: He likes all those who practice the truth. He not only respects them, but also is willing to come into contact with them and communicate truth together with them in order to gain more. … A person who genuinely loves the truth likes seeking the company of people who are honest and love the truth. No matter what their character flaws are, he likes fellowshiping with them because he can benefit a lot and gain something that he cannot get from those who don’t like truth.” These two passages of fellowship show that the most important thing in our interactions with others is to first see whether or not the person sincerely believes in God and loves the truth as opposed to seeing whether or not his temper and character are after our hearts. When our interactions with others are established on the principles of truth, with regard to all those who are humane and love the truth, we can be honest with each other and love each other, and then we will naturally be light and liberated; with regard to those people who do not have good humanity and do not love the truth, we only need to maintain an ordinary relationship instead of a deep relationship with them so that much unnecessary vexation will naturally be avoided.

Second, treat the failings and corruptions of others correctly and don’t delineate or judge others arbitrarily.

The Lord Jesus said: “Judge not, that you be not judged. For with what judgment you judge, you shall be judged: and with what measure you mete, it shall be measured to you again” (Mat 7:1-2). The Lord Jesus taught us that regardless of what transgressions others have or regardless of what corruptions they reveal, we shouldn’t judge or delineate them arbitrarily. We should be loving toward others, forbear with others, and help them. It is recorded in the Bible how the Lord Jesus treated transgressors: Pharisees brought an adulterous woman before Jesus to see how He would deal with her. In accordance with the law, this woman would have been stoned to death, but the Lord Jesus didn’t condemn her but just told her not to sin anymore. From this practical example, we can see that the Lord Jesus particularly sympathizes with our human weakness. Regardless of what transgressions we have, as long as we truly repent, God will give us opportunities waiting for us to repent and change. If we don’t view others with an eye for development but treat others relying on satanic corrupt disposition: making harsh demands of others, trifling over minor matters, and arbitrarily judging and defining others when they reveal some corruption, then we simply cannot get well along with others.

For example, there was a sister in our church who always didn’t attend meetings on time because of passivity and weakness. I helped her many times, but she was still like that. Then I decided that she was not a sincere believer in God. So, I didn’t want to support her anymore or pay any more attention to her. Afterward, I saw the Bible say: “Let not him that eats despise him that eats not; and let not him which eats not judge him that eats: for God has received him. Who are you that judge another man’s servant? to his own master he stands or falls. Yes, he shall be held up: for God is able to make him stand” (Rom 14: 3-4). When I read this I felt quite ashamed. Thinking back on how God moved brothers and sisters to support me and fellowship God’s word with me when I was negative and weak and fell in defeat so that I could understand God’s intentions, and have faith and strength to feel myself emerged anew. The current situation of the sister was the same as my previous situation. It was because she didn’t understand the truth and was bound to family entanglements that she couldn’t attend meetings on time. Now when she needed our loving support, I should communicate God’s will with her so as to help her understand the truth, unbound the shackles of Satan’s dark influence, and return to God’s presence. However, not only did I not understand her difficulties, but I also gave her the cold shoulder and defined her as a believer who wasn’t sincere in God. How arrogant and conceited I had been! After realizing these, I prayed and repented to God, and was willing to change my wrong attitude. Then I fellowshiped with her based on love and patience and shared my experiences and knowledge with her. In this way, after several times of fellowship, she understood God’s intentions and, with that, her situation changed, and she started to attend meetings regularly and even to perform her duties in the church. Through this experience I understood that during the period that God works to save man, no matter what weaknesses and corruptions we have, as long as the essence of our nature is not bad and we truly believe in God and pursue the truth, God will give us opportunities to repent. Therefore, we should also tolerate and help others out of love and treat everyone according to God’s attitude toward man. We must not arbitrarily define or judge others. Only treating others this way is fair and conforms to the Lord’s will.

This photo shows the principles of contrast and emphasis. It shows contrast by making half the background bright, and the other half dark. This also shows emphasis because all of your attention goes to the paperweight. I set up a light on the right side, with a paper over it to soften the light. Next, I centered the paperweight and took the picture. After that, I put the picture in Photoshop and got rid of the color, making it black and white. The thing I think I did well is setting up the light so it would make one of the sides dark, while the other side is white. One thing I could have improved on is that I could have made the ball off centered. One of the challenges was making the ball not have a lot of glare and not get my reflection in it.

So universally true is this, the spot where we chance to be always seems the best.

The Sleight of Mind Set Workshops | MindSways - April 2013

SEEING THROUGH ILLUSIONS

Is this email not displaying correctly?

Hi,

The Sleight of Mind Set Workshop is a one day, intimate learning experience where we will guide you through a number of principles. You'll learn the Principles of Mind Magic, the Framework of Mind Magic; we'll Explore Why and How Illusions Work, look at the role of MMI's (Multiple Moments of Interest, Interaction & Insight) and Thinking Fallacies. Most importantly though, you will Learn And Be Given a Number of Easy and Practical Tricks (with supporting materials) that you can take away with you and start performing and adding to your delivery the next day.

We wanted to make sure you'd get the best out of the one day experience, so we've packed months of one-to-one training sessions and years of our own experience into the day. The themes of the day are Innovation & Creativity, Practically Applied Advantage, Emotional Engagement, Show, Not Tell and the importance of Mystery, Magic and Surprise. For more information on the day, please see mindsways.com/SMS/ and for a brochure of what the day is about, please look at mindsways.com/SMS/#Brochure

TAPPING INTO POPULARITY

On the day we talk about the enduring allure and popularity that mystery, the paranormal and Mind Magic has. Magic is never far out of the popular sphere with Derren Brown filling theatres and drawing large TV audiences. Part of the popularity is down to the fact that it "May just be real". This is also shown by the new blockbuster film, Now You See Me.

This new film is based on the premise of what if the impossible was real. Starring Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Mark Ruffalo, Jesse Eisenberg and Isla Fisher, the film shows the hold that magic has over our imagination. It also gives us an insight into how popular magic is, and a fascinating glimpse into what it would be like to have real powers. To see more about the film, please go to mindsways.com/SMS/#NowYouSeeMe.

Today, to stand out we need the personal touch and the sleight of mind set workshop is about tapping into this popularity of mind magic and adding value through your delivery and the personal touch.

Our aim is to make day informative, entertaining and practical for you. People have attended for many reasons including:

Curiosity (just how was that done)

Learning something new

Interest in how the mind works

Adding variety to enliven their presentations

New and different approaches

Something to impress others with

An increased reputation

A channel for their passion and fascination

Wider perspectives and experiences

The real power of Mind Magic and Psychological Artistry lies not with just the tricks, but the effect that the delivery of the tricks have on people, tapping into the emotions of mystery combined with the personal touch and firing off the silent questions. On the workshops and in the SNT kit, we give you the tricks, however, learning to use them with what you do is where the real power lies.

By delivering these tricks, you can evoke the making of the extraordinary. By combining the tricks with the energy of your words, your message and your personality, you make yourself stand out, stimulate fascination and create interest in you. This is when the real magic happens, in the theatre of the minds.

In communications theory the saying "it's not us, its them" has great importance. Likewise in Psychological Artistry and in our Sleight of Mind Set workshops these take on a very important role. For more on this, please go to mindsways.com/SMS/

THE FEEDBACK - What People Say

The feedback from the workshops have been extremely positive, with people (from last weeks workshops) saying things like:

"It really was most enjoyable and enlightening"

"Fantastic day... a great eye opener!"

"Another great course, with plenty to think about and over"

The workshops have been enjoyed and shown to be beneficial to many people over the past year. The events have been attended and proved to be relevant to people from a wide range of backgrounds including entrepreneurs, business consultants, health professionals, coaches of life, performance and sports, therapists, hypnotherapists, trainers etc.

This is an unorthodox approach to understanding human behaviour, illustrating and promoting our messages, and this is where the real power lies. As Marty Neumeier says in ZAG " Be Different - NO Really Different". For more on what people say, please see mindsways.com/WPS/

THEATRE OF THE MIND - Tricks on 3 Levels

On the workshop we uncover tricks, look at making a trick into an effect and making the effect into a piece that works for you. The three levels we work on are:

Effect of a trick - triggers "how did you do that?"

Analysis of a trick - triggers "why does this trick work? Why does the effect happen?"

Practicality of a trick - explores how you can use the tricks

This involves using a combination of Psychology, Neuroscience, Smart Thinking and the ideas, tools and techniques from Mind Magic. The principles and lessons are useful in understanding our belief systems, how we think and act. It is in our minds that we experience emotions, thoughts and actions. These are in turn determined by the silent questions we ask ourselves.

We use Mind Magic effects as a reflection of how the mind works. We use the 3 levels above as a lens to increase our understanding how our minds control our actions, emotions and thoughts. It is through this that our minds tell us stories that justify our actions. For more on this, please see mindsways.com/SMS/

WHAT IS PSYCHOLOGICAL ARTISTRY?

Psychological Artistry is the blending of the science of how we think, and the combination of:

Creating connection, rapport and emotions

Telling stories

Gaining and holding attention

Producing insights

Displaying human nature

Cognition

Show, Not Tell

Multiple Moments of Interest, Interaction and Insights (MMI's)

to create a method for successful communication. Therefore, Psychological Artistry is where science and art meet Mind Magic.

Harold Thimbleby - Press On: Principles of Interaction Programming

"This is an important book, moving interaction design from an art form to a science. Harold Thimbleby provides a treasure trove of information, introducing powerful methods, yet so skillfully explained that even the non-technical reader can follow and learn. The methods promise to make dramatic improvements in the design and evaluation of interactive systems. Don't worry: the formal tools are introduced slowly, step-by-step. Even if you normally fear such methods, you will be entranced and enchanted. Buy this book and use it. I know I will."

👩‍🏫 This is one of the last books written by James Allen. Like all his works it is eminently practical. He never wrote theories, or for the sake of writing, or to add another to his many books; but he wrote when he had a message, and it became a message only when he had lived it out in his own life, and knew that it was good. Thus he wrote facts, which he had proven by practice.

To live out the teaching of this book faithfully in every detail of life will lead one to more than happiness and success even to blessedness, satisfaction and peace. - Summary by Lily L. Allen

Editing (if any) no editing was done with this photo, although I was debating about lowering the brightness on the book from the flash. Unfortunately flash is the only way this camera takes a decent picture.

--Don Norman, Nielsen Norman group and Northwestern University, author of The Design of Future Things
