Yesterday we had a Halloween day in Preschool! We talked about why we celebrate Halloween, why we dress up and why we carve pumpkins (the children found it very funny that people used to carve swedes). We talked about how many pumpkins get wasted every year and thought about how we could use all of the pumpkin so we didn't throw it away and waste it. The adults cut open the pumpkins and let the children scoop out all of the seeds and flesh. We decided to roast the seeds in olive oil and then ate them at snack time (they were delicious!) We also roasted the flesh and when it had cooled down we mixed it with oats, honey, water and vanilla extract and made our very own pumpkin pie, which the children enjoyed eating at the end of the day!

Finally, a fairly balanced looking bento:
salami rose (half a rose is more like it)
cinnamon apples
blackberries
whole wheat bread with butter
2 easy bake oven-baked chocolate chip cookies (using nut-free ingredients!)
Didn't eat the bread or the salami and only ate part of the cheese
Sawing angles for fitting panels to octagonal shapes. Each 2" saw cut takes 2-4 minutes. They collectively cut over 50.
Ava at preschool, from a couple weeks ago. She’s been wanting to go early lately, so since we were the first ones there, I snapped a few pictures of her in the foyer. Her two front teeth seemed to be moving suddenly around this time, making more of a gap between them and her other teeth. They were very loose, but I suspect she also had a growth spurt to make space for adult teeth.

Morning and afternoon 4-year old preschool classes participated in a graduation ceremony as they prepare to enter kindergarten in the fall. Congratulations, to some of our littlest Bluejays!

Dropped by a ribbon-cutting for new playgrounds at some Headstart preschools in Des Moines. No surprise but, once the ribbon was cut, everyone was either off to the slide or mugging for the camera.
Prideens delightfully celebrated their birthdays with their Mother’s Pride family. The children enjoyed cutting the cake, eating sweets, dancing to foot tapping music and had a gala time in a fun filled celebration at school as their teachers showered their heartfelt blessings on them. For Prideens their school indeed is a garden of love that nurtures and celebrates childhood to the fullest.
Celebrations often make school a joyful place for children and make them feel at home. It also inculcates confidence and self worth, fosters peer group bonding and instills social values like sharing and co-operation in them.

i added five more cards and miniature dinosaurs to this activity. the dinosaurs and cards are made by different manufacturers, so colors and other indicators can be misleading and T really has to pay attention to the actual features of each dinosaur. frankly, i find dinosaurs entirely inconsequential and couldn't care less about what he knows about them, but activities like this are so good for his developing discernment. and of course it's fun to see him so passionate about anything.
It was with much pride and joy that Kieran made Spiderman cupcakes to take to preschool for his early birthday celebration. He held the Earth & walked around the Sun (note plate in middle) 5 times as a candle was lit for each time, then blew out another candle. The other teacher held my notorious cupcake platter as Kieran carefully distributed one to everyone before digging in.
