I was out for a walk and about to head home when this beautiful Great Egret landed not far from me. I was able to sit about 15m away for the better part of half an hour whilst it preened itself.

Shags have a preen gland on the top side of their tail near the base so perform these contortions so collect the oil to waterproof their feathers.

.....an juvenile preening an adult. The juvenile Kea have yellow ceres and eyelids which fade to grey as the bird matures.
Kea are the only alpine parrot in the world located only in the South Island in the high country and alpine basins of New Zealand. They are endemic and protected. Unfortunately they are on the decline.
A duck preens itself in Hebden Water in Hebden, UK. I liked this one more turned on its side. I think more people should experiment with turning pictures on their side -- it can have different effects on the image. For example, doing this to this image completely confuses the sense of perspective; it seems more two dimensional this way.
