The shot was taken from a distance to avoid disturbing the owl, and the image was cropped in to emphasize more on the preening action and minimize the messy environment. Enjoy!

Just three more images of this "slightly out of season" Red-footed Booby (Sula sula) on an inland lake in Wake County, North Carolina (USA).

The bird was resting most of the time it was observed. Occasionally it would do a thorough preening, including this one before taking flight--just after this sequence was taken. It flew off quite strongly, from what I could see through the trees. Efforts to find it on area lakes have failed. I hope it made it back to the coast.

I'm pretty sure I will never see a booby again while listening to the song of Carolina Wrens and Cardinals.

I spent some time photographing this pair of pelicans last Sunday considering taking part in a competition but had no time to enter.

Happy Bokeh Wednesday!

I didn't have a whole lot of time to set this up (work calls), but I wanted to participate in HBW. I know it would've been nicer if taken outside, but you won't catch this 8.5 month preggo lady going outside in 90 degree weather! :) So this will have to do!

Intent on his grooming session.

Studio 26 assignment - birds

This is one of my recently completed pastel paintings. 12x16 inches.

This isn't very interesting, but I kinda liked the smooth background and the framing. It could have been focused better. I hate autofocus, it just doesn't work with fast lenses. When the DoF is so narrow how is it possibly going to hit the eye. Well, when you are close up anyway.

Anyway, this is a duck, of sorts. I don't know much about birds, but it isn't a 'duck' duck. Its a variation on a duck. So that makes it more interesting right? Look it even has a red bill. Who would have thought! There are lots of weird variations on ducks in Green Park. I think I got shots of all of them, including some larger ducks, like swans and geese. But I won't post them all as they are mostly boring and Kate thinks I have an unhealthy interest in avian creatures and is worried I am going to start spending my weekends in silence in a hide, spend all my money on 600mm lenses and, basically, become more geeky than I already am!

This Tricolored Heron was happy to sit and show off her newly preened feathers for me.

Dunnock preening on the side door to my rear garden this morning. I like the way towards the end it lifts its wing as though to get a bit of breeze or sunshine on the underside. Taken with the FZ330 @ full 600mm zoom when set up for insects

I think this might be a Shag preening in the harbour of Picton in New Zealand. Any confirmation or correct identification welcomed!

At Pier Head, Claddagh. It takes a lot of preening to keep those feathers in order.

A little sibling preening going on this morning at the nest. The kids still have not taken their first flight!
