The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has spotted a UFO — well, the UFO Galaxy, to be precise. NGC 2683 is a spiral galaxy seen almost edge-on, giving it the shape of a classic science fiction spaceship. This is why the astronomers at the Astronaut Memorial Planetarium and Observatory gave it this attention-grabbing nickname. While a bird’s eye view lets us see the detailed structure of a galaxy (such as this Hubble image of a barred spiral), a side-on view has its own perks. In particular, it gives astronomers a great opportunity to see the delicate dusty lanes of the spiral arms silhouetted against the golden haze of the galaxy’s core. In addition, brilliant clusters of young blue stars shine scattered throughout the disc, mapping the galaxy’s star-forming regions. Perhaps surprisingly, side-on views of galaxies like this one do not prevent astronomers from deducing their structures. Studies of the properties of the light coming from NGC 2683 suggest that this is a barred spiral galaxy, even though the angle we see it at does not let us see this directly. NGC 2683, discovered on 5 February 1788 by the famous astronomer William Herschel, lies in the Northern constellation of Lynx. A constellation named not because of its resemblance to the feline animal, but because it is fairly faint, requiring the “sensitive eyes of a cat” to discern it. And when you manage to get a look at it, you’ll find treasures like this, making it well worth the effort. This image is produced from two adjacent fields observed in visible and infrared light by Hubble’s Advanced Camera for Surveys. A narrow strip which appears slightly blurred and crosses most the image horizontally is a result of a gap between Hubble’s detectors. This strip has been patched using images from observations of the galaxy made by ground-based telescopes, which show significantly less detail. The field of view is approximately 6.5 by 3.3 arcminutes.

“Life is a helluva thing. You can see trouble coming and you can’t do a damn thing to prevent it coming. You just gotta sit and watch and wait.” From Miguel Street, by VS Naipaul
There is perhaps no greater mark of a writer’s genius that you cannot read him through his words: anyone who ever heard, saw, or watched V S Naipaul engage in the real world will find this throwaway philosophical aside on life entirely alien to their experience of the man who was famously precise, pitiless, and impatient. Yet, that same experience of the man makes the words inescapably his: economical, deeply weighted, deceptively simple.
Although the precise history of the development of rocket propulsion is obscure, we know that the first rockets were developed in ancient China. Modern rocket engines that lift spacecraft into orbit operate on the very same principles as the first Chinese rockets. Both ancient and modern rockets are reaction devices. Key to the development of the early Chinese rocket was the invention of something similar to black powder, a mixture of saltpeter (the oxidizer), charcoal and sulfur that burns rapidly and furiously when ignited. The first crude firecracker probably was a sealed bamboo tube filled with black powder. When ignited, the black powder exploded violently. If only one end of the tube was sealed, the burning black powder forced a mass of flames, gas and particles out of the unsealed open end. In reaction, the bamboo tube would move rapidly in the opposite direction. This device was a crude rocket. Sunlight dapples the geometrically precise rows of a mature vineyard at Finca Adalgisa, where the vibrant golden hues of autumn contrast against the deep emerald canopy of native trees. This high-angle capture highlights the sophisticated integration of viticulture within a serene residential landscape, emphasizing the architectural harmony between traditional homesteads and the productive land. The long, rhythmic shadows cast by tall poplars stretch across the vines, creating a textured tapestry that defines the quintessential terroir of the Argentine wine country. Pristine swimming pools sparkle amidst the greenery, offering a modern respite within this historically rich agricultural estate nestled in the shadow of the Andes. The photograph utilizes a wide field of view to illustrate the dense, verdant canopy that envelops the property, effectively blurring the lines between private sanctuary and working farm. Every cluster of leaves and rustic structure tells a story of sustainable tradition and the meticulous care required to maintain such an iconic Mendoza landmark. As the season turns, the cooling air amplifies the saturated colors of the foliage, providing a dramatic backdrop for the sprawling estate. This vantage point allows viewers to appreciate the sheer scale and tranquility of the region, where time seems to slow amidst the gentle rustle of leaves and the promise of a future vintage.
