Recent Tate research situates it as being first exhibited in 1793, on account of an eighteenth century exhibition note: meanwhile that conclusion may be in error. It is perfectly possible that the eighteenth century exhibition record citing the date 1793 is non descriptive and refers to another painting.
Some of the Ford boy's golden buttons on his red trouser-suit are perhaps unfinished by the painter, unless they're dulled by being in the shade of the tree. Just a few of these.
According to Tate historical record, this painting shows Mary and Francis, the children of Sir Francis Ford, a wealthy politician and Barbadian plantation owner, giving a coin to a distressed beggar boy. The scene was a generalised social comment by the artist, designed to show landowning families like the Fords in a benevolent light.
The children are in the English countryside, on what looks like a mild English late Summer or early Autumn day.
They are at Thames Ditton, the English home of both Sir Francis Ford and Lord Henry Fitzgerald, otherwise known as The Scarlet Pimpernel.

Which situates the beggar boy in distress at about age ten.
A focus here on the faces of Mary and Francis Ford, and their benevolent activity, symbolic of the rescue of French King Louis XVII by the English.
The dark hat the Ford boy wears is clearly funereal, with the face of a grim funeral director in its tinted ostrich feather. Ostensibly a symbol of his awareness of the fate of French King Louis XVI, and of aristocrats and royalists during the French revolution, including the children. We can see his curt, childlike surprise on his face, as he looks at 'beggar boy Louis', examining the situation of a living royal boy he's been told all about.
The little girl's face is a picture of well taught, exemplary understanding and benevolence as she hands the 'beggar boy' the silver coin.

In close up, we can see how the silver coin in this view is suggestive of the head and middle body of a dolphin. Fine silver painting lines beside the silver coin make up the lower body and tail of this dolphin.

The name 'dolphin' in French is 'dauphin', which also means 'heir to the French throne', or 'one due to take the French throne'.
(A French king, as yet formally uncrowned, would still be 'the dauphin').
Behind the children's heads, clouds shape as a large full moon with a watchful face, telling the tale of Louis' rescue (apparently on the 2nd June 1795, the day of a full moon, just days after before the announcement of the tragic death of 'L'Enfant du Temple' on the 10th).

Patterned stone walls meet at a precise corner above the Barcelona Pavilion’s dark reflecting pool. Bookmatched veining forms mirrored botanical shapes across the pale slabs, while the adjacent wall turns cooler and more deeply striated. A hard triangular shadow crosses both surfaces and continues into the water, where stone, joints, and darkness are rearranged into an ambiguous second architecture.
The photographer uses an 18 mm lens horizontally and removes nearly every conventional cue of scale. No figure, furniture, roof edge, or landscape interrupts the close study; the composition is constructed from slabs, seams, shadow, and reflection. At 1/640 second and ISO 100, the exposure responds to fierce sunlight, preserving detail in the brightest stone while allowing the pool to approach black. The wide lens keeps the corner taut and gives the diagonal shadow enough spatial force to read as another plane rather than a passing effect.
Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich’s pavilion is often praised for apparent simplicity, but this image reveals how materially active that simplicity is. Stone was selected and arranged as image, joints establish measure, water repeats and destabilizes the walls, and sunlight continuously redraws the enclosure. The photographer’s crop makes those systems the whole subject. Instead of documenting the pavilion’s plan or iconic furniture, the frame interprets a fleeting optical condition in which solidity becomes difficult to locate. The corner is simultaneously mineral surface, reflected pattern, and dark void—an exact construction made temporarily uncertain by weather and viewpoint.

Louis XVII was age ten in June 1795 when he was rescued from the Paris Temple Prison and taken to England by the 'League of the Scarlet Pimpernel', a group of royalist rescuers with extensive contacts and associates.
