2023 is the Year of the Rabbit, a black rabbit to be precise, and rabbit's are a sign of longevity, peace, and prosperity so this is looking like it will be a year of hope and fruitfulness

The precise moment this sleepy buck was illuminated by early autumn light.

An accurate astronomical observatory.

Like other platforms on the island, including the lone moai of the Ahu Huri a Urenga, the Ahu Akivi was built following a precise astronomical orientation. In this way they controlled the change of seasons and the most appropriate times for agricultural tasks.

In Akivi the axis of the platform was oriented from north to south, getting the faces of the moai look exactly at the point where the sun sets during the equinox of the austral spring (September 21st) and their backs face the sun of the dawn during the autumn equinox (March 21st).

The best time to visit and take pictures is at sunset, which is when the setting sun illuminates the seven statues and highlights their features.

The legend of the seven explorers:

In the recent literature on Akivi, the seven statues of the platform are related with the seven young people who were sent to explore the island before its first colonization by King Hotu Matu’a.

A legend says that Hau Maka, the priest of Hotu Matu’a had a dream in which his soul flew across the ocean when he sighted the island. Next, he sent seven explorers sailing through the sea to locate the island, study its conditions and the best area to disembark.

Although the idea that the legend was remembered in stone is attractive, it seems that it can not be true. The moai statues belong to a quite late sculptural period, after the year 1440 AD and historians consider the hypothesis that the first settlers arrived on the island towards the fifth century, so they rule out a possible relationship between both facts.

The restoration that boosted Rapa Nui:

vimeo.com/63018738

Ahu Akivi was the first ahu to be restored after a small group of islanders, at the request of Thor Heyerdahl, erected the statue of the Ahu Ature Huki on the beach of Anakena in 1956. As a member of that Norwegian expedition was the American anthropologist William Mulloy, who from then on would devote a large part of his life to studying the mysteries of Easter Island.

The reconstruction work in Ahu Akivi began in March 1960 and continued until October of that year. William Mulloy and his Chilean colleague Gonzalo Figueroa worked with an archeologic team of 25 Rapanui people in various phases of excavation and reconstruction. This was the first serious archaeological excavation and the first complete restoration of a ceremonial site in Rapa Nui.

The works were done with hardly any material means, they only used wooden poles, stones and a pair of oxen. But with perseverance, ingenuity and effort they achieved their goal. To raise and place the first moai, they used a stone ramp and two large wooden levers. This operation took a month. However, after perfecting the technique and with the experience gained, it took less than a week to raise the seventh statue.

When the work was finished, Father Sebastian Englert himself gave the blessing at a very emotional opening ceremony. After 150 years the islanders could observe again several moai standing on an ahu.

The restoration of Ahu Akivi is considered a turning point in Rapa Nui. From that moment, other works of restoration of more platforms began. The Ahu Akivi was followed by the ahu of Hanga Kio’e, Tahai, Anakena and Tongariki. The ancient platforms regained their former glory and the small and remote Easter Island attracted the attention of other researchers and travelers. And what is more important, it unleashed a true cultural renaissance, an economic development and a renewed sense of pride in being Rapanui.

Skylar finished up the precise cuts for the toile poinsettia's, making sure the silvery fabric looked full and exact. Placing a few stitches and a handful of pearls later, she was set to attach them to the dress. A simple sticking charm was all she needed till her thread and needle would finish the work and she would be complete.

Cobie was across the room, as she was looking for a design. Skye looked back and smiled, "You usually look beautiful in a mermaid cut dress, it accentuates your hips but compliments your hourglass shape." She gave the girl a playful wink and began to puncture the needle through the fabric. He wand moving inward and outward creating the correct stitching pattern she needed.

Last picture by Ossie Kettle. I kept this one. Is so precise.

I didn't know it was going to be a full moon until we stumbled upon it in the morning. TBH, this is a day earlier than the technically precise time.

On certain plants, I actually like the leaves as much or more than the flowers. The newer varieties of Hydrangea are one such plant.

The old world Snowball Hydrangea have large and somewhat dull leaves, whereas some of the newer varieties have sturdy, waxy, and deep green leaves which I find so beautiful. And those sawtooth edges are so precise and perfect!

This is the precise moment the Blue Tit's beak pierced a Long Tail's wing during an altercation

But it wasn't that which struck me about it

It was the 'splash' of colour and movement which drew me to the shot

Fortunately taken against a dark background (IMO) it has an almost 'arty' feel to it which I quite like

Unconventionally cropped I know., but for two reasons...

1. To clearly see what was happening

2. To maximize the impact of colour and motion

I understand It wont be to everyone's taste., especially in this tight format

But for me it was something a bit different (which I always love in any shot)

and also because it was taken in our own back garden

Cannot be precise about the location of this shot though it is certainly in the Lofoten Islands in Northern Norway. It was I believe taken from the road around the small village of Halmnoy .

The mountains of this group of Islands are extraordinary they seem to rise like walls out of the sea. Certainly one of the most beautiful places I have been lucky enough to see.

Bit of a blast from the past, four years to be precise. Not sure why I've never posted this colour version before - I'm guessing it was because at the time I hung onto the words of youtubers who said we should always shoot low ISO when dealing with landscape photography (now it's quite OK to up your ISO). But I also think it was to do with the fact that it was so, so very windy that day. I recall having to lean into the wind to take this photo (I'm sure Petra has a photo of me actually doing so!) so was scared of camera shake. I also recall having to stand on the shoulder strap of the camera bag so the bag wouldn't blow away, it was that windy.

Taken for the Macro Mondays theme of 'knolling'

Knolling refers to the practice of arranging similar objects in a precise, perpendicular manner. The goal of knolling is to create a sense of order and clarity in a space by aligning and organizing the objects within it

The term was coined by Andrew Kromelow in the late 1980s and later popularized by artist Tom Sachs. Kromelow was a janitor in Frank Gehry’s Santa Monica studio and had a habit of laying out

Knolling is a term coined by Andrew Kromelow in the late 1980s. Kromelow was a janitor in Frank Gehry’s Santa Monica studio at the time, and he came up with the concept of knolling as a way to organize the tools in the workshop when they were not in use. Kromelow observed that the tools in the workshop were often left in disarray, and he saw the potential for a more efficient and organized workspace by aligning and organizing the tools.

Kromelow’s colleague, artist Tom Sachs was intrigued by Kromelow’s method of organizing the tools. Sachs adopted the practice of knolling in his own studio and began incorporating it into his artwork. He has credited Kromelow as the inspiration for his use of knolling in his art.

Since then, the concept of knolling has gained widespread popularity, especially within the art world. It is often used as a way to photograph and display objects, such as tools or art supplies, in a visually appealing manner. Knolling has also been used as a way to organize and declutter workspaces, allowing for a more efficient and productive environment.

The appeal of knolling lies in its simplicity and minimalism. It is a way to showcase the beauty of everyday objects by presenting them in a clear and organized manner. It is also a way to bring attention to the forms and shapes of the objects themselves, rather than their function or purpose.

In addition to its practical applications, knolling can also be seen as a form of art in and of itself. The arrangement of objects in a knolling display requires a keen eye for balance and composition, as well as a sense of aesthetics. It is a way to transform a collection of seemingly mundane objects into a cohesive and visually striking display.

Overall, knolling is a unique and innovative way to approach organization and display. It is a concept that has gained widespread popularity within the art world and beyond, and it shows no signs of slowing down.

I specify the original photo is not mine.

In his great Naauwkeurige beschrijving der aardgewassen (=Precise description of plants) (1696), Abraham Munting (1626-1685), well-known hortulanus and professor of botany at Groningen, writes of Columbines that there are 'many enjoyable kinds'. He discusses a few and also adds a list of its medicinal qualities, something contemporary authors don't do.

The tale of how our plant came by its Latin name - Aquilegia - is a love story among the classical Gods. I haven't been able to find an ancient source, but the tale is told by a French Carthusian monk, François le Gentil (1600-1726), in his Le jardenier solitaire (English version in 1706). The word 'solitaire' fits the solitude in which Carthusian monks were supposed to work with an eye to religious devotion but which without doubt might also allow their imaginations free, galloping rein. I gave a summary of his story at

Limodorum abortivum (Orchidaceae) 126 23

The name Limodorum abortivum refers to the small size of the leaves and the way they sheath the stem. Abortivum literally means aborted leaves.

It is a curious orchid that still requires study to determine its precise biology. Although it is widely considered an entirely saprophytic plant, there are indications that it may be (at least partly) parasitic. Two factors in particular confound the issue: firstly, the stem has been shown to contain measurable levels of chlorophyll, and secondly, the plant is dependent on mycorrhizal fungi for its entire existence.

This is a widespread species with a distribution from Belgium in the north, North Africa in the south and at least as far as Russia in the east. It does not occur in Britain and reaches the height of it's abundance in the southern Mediterranean where it is predominantly found on calcareous soils and usually associated with pine forest. This close proximity to living pine trees is another link with possible parasitism but as already mentioned, the physiology is not yet fully understood.

Masborough station was an impressive affair with four platforms on the Midland mainline, indeed the platforms I think are still in situ, despite the station being long closed.

This may well be a Northeast to Southwest service, just pulling away from the station with the next stop Sheffield Midland.

It looks as if resignalling work was in progress, with a colour light on the platform, and the "doll" from the gantry lying on the ground.

As promised, we are back today in the beautiful birch forest near Tisa in Bohemian Switzerland. To be more precise, we are standing in front of it today and have the sunrise behind us.

It's amazing how much this angle changes the effect of the picture.

The morning mist lies heavy on last year's slightly frozen grass, which crunches and rustles with every step you walk over.

The temperatures are near freezing and an icy wind is blowing in my face. Despite this, or perhaps because of this, there is a poignant silence here that immediately affects me and totally relaxes me.

The more strenuous part of the morning is still waiting for me here. Because after taking the photos from here, I walked across this bumpy meadow down into the forest, which you can see in the background here.

The other pictures that you have seen so far were taken there.

Here’s and another image from my archives, taken in 1986 to be precise from the south tower rooftop observation platform of the World Trade Center take with my Minolta X-700 SLR. The Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges and East River all clearly visible. I never did go up to the top of the WTC again and obviously it was destroyed on September 11th 2001. Did not imagine that 1986 would be the last time on that observation platform, always imagined taking my kids but kept putting it off. For those of us that live here in the New York City when you carefully look at the area surrounding the Brooklyn Bridge you realize how much that area has changed in 32 years, no Jane’s Carousel, boarded up Empire Warehouse and to the south where today is Brooklyn Bridge Parks grassy knolls there was unused warehouse space. On the Manhattan side today a 800 foot 71 story tower dwarfs the bridge on its north. Interestingly enough though under the Brooklyn Bridge is a Circleline Boat which still is in operation with it tours of New York City.

This is the precise moment he bit me. It was my own fault. I saw a commotion outside and Camille (cat) was going after this juvenile chipmunk. I grabbed the little guy just as she was closing in, but I had the camera in my hand and decided to take a quick picture. Once he bit me, he wasn't inclined to let go. I shook him off onto a soft patch in the garden, but Camille was right there. So I picked him up again (some people are slow learners) and this time set him down in front of a known chipmunk tunnel.

These are my 30 “best” photos of 2022, taken and/or published this year. What are you guys thinking??? Every year, in December, I make a selection of my favorite photos of the year. This is not self-praise, but a basic exercise in photography, the selection, interesting for us to review our work, understand the whole work of a year, and even have a pre-ready selection in case you need it. Of course, this is never a definitive choice, whenever I review the photos I'll see others, but anyway, it's necessary to close a list. If you thought you had a photo of me that deserved to be here, please let me know.

Happy New Year to all my Flickr-Friends!

Taken a while ago, 2012 to be precise. This image of the cruise ship Carnival Sunshine manoeuvring in the Lagoon, Venice, is probably something that the Venetians haven’t seen for several months.

Now that the holidays are over, I can finally show you a different photo.

And for this one, we're going far south and about 25 years back in time. To be precise, we're at the southernmost point I've ever visited in my life, the southern coast of Australia.

Here you can see two of the Twelve Apostles. That's what these large sandstone rocks, standing out in the Pacific surf, are called.

As I mentioned, this photo is about 25 years old and was taken with a small (and very basic) analog camera. This is, of course, quite noticeable in the photo's quality.

A look inside the window of a scanning tunnelling microscope - a scientific instrument which allows for atomic-scale imaging and electronic characterisation of materials. The inventors of this microscope, Gerd Binnig and Heinrich Rohrer, won a Nobel Prize for their work in 1986. Today, it is widely used in research labs all over the world.

The image shows a stainless steel ultra-high vacuum chamber which is cooled by cryogenic liquids - allowing for a highly controlled environment for measurements. The long rod in the lower part of the image is used to move samples within the vacuum chamber. Through the main window a small cylindrical probe which raster scans across the surface to produce images can be seen pointing upwards, while a sample of interest mounted on a rectangular plate points downwards. The view into the microscope capable of precise imaging offers a "window to the nanoscale."

Born in a small Australian town about three hours from Sydney, Smug now lives and works in Glasgow, Scotland

Known for his photo-realist graffiti work, Smug, or SmugOne, aka Sam Bates, is a contemporary graffiti writer and muralist with immense skill. Using nothing but spray cans, he has been able to gain mastery over the difficult task of creating highly technical figurative pieces that retain that edgy, cheeky, and playful side of traditional graffiti whilst embracing more established elements of figurative fine art. Traditionally, photo-realists have a lot of time on their hands, warm quiet studios and work with tiny brushes with precise movement. These are the three things that no one in graffiti culture generally has at their disposal, and yet, some of them, Smug being the perfect example, are able to create amazing large-scale road-side murals that look like they could be photographs.

During our visit to the Roy Lichtenstein exhibition in Mons, we visited this park labeled "Remarkable Garden" since May 2021, this 3ha estate accommodates the buildings of a former brewery-malt house surrounded by a park with century-old trees. decorative objects.

Set back in a large wooded property, fenced with a high wall and gates, neoclassical ensemble of an old brewery built in the 2nd half of the 19th century, today called the Château du Bocage. Arranged in semi-enclosed order around a quadrangular courtyard, low outbuildings, barn and imposing main building, remarkably homogeneous.

the decorative structures offered by the Quintessence store are grouped by theme. You can see them throughout the walk with that characteristic rust of Corten steel everywhere.

This is the new trend. Corten steel is now suitable for cutting plant decorations that can complement a special atmosphere in the garden. For these precise cuts, craftsmen use a digitally controlled laser beam. It melts metal without creating burrs. The line can be very delicate.

Claudine took the opportunity to buy three garden decorations including a module.
