Around New Year, people in Tokyo flock to Meiji-jingu; the countries largest shrine. Many leave prayers on pieces of paper or on small wood blocks like this.
Taken in Xiahe, Gansu, China. These Tibetan prayer wheels lie along the 3km pilgrim circuit and there are over 1,200 of them!
Xiahe is a county in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu, People's Republic of China. It is home to the famous Labrang Monastery, one of the largest Tibetan Buddhist monasteries outside of the Tibet Autonomous Region. The town is populated largely by ethnic Tibetans, and is situated at an altitude of 3,000m.

No cameras allowed inside, though photographing the prayer circle is okay. It is meant for meditation & reflection, not photo-ops.
Stones assembled near the start of the wall, resembling faces, eyes - a haunting image. Soon as I saw them a chill passed over me. Very powerful.
The wall is a tribute to Tom Hendrix's great-great-grandmother, a Yuchi who was born in what is now NW Alabama. She was removed int what became known as the Trail of Tears, but eventually walked back all the way from the Oklahoma territories. His wall was built one stone at a time, just as her journey was made one step at a time. And just like her journey, it winds, has high spots & low spots.
He has rocks from 127 States, countries & islands, including stones from the Arctic & Antarctic, the top of Everest, & the bottom of the ocean. I'm planning to send him some mahogany obsidian from Northeast California, maybe several others from my collection.
It has received recognition as a significant piece of environmental art. The wife of Alabama's Governor Bob Riley wanted to turn it into a tourist destination, but Mr Hendrix refused. That's not what the wall is about.

One can see many walking around with these attributes around mosques. Taxi drivers hang their praying beads around the mirror, others tend to fiddle the beads with their fingers. In Catholic tradition the rosary has the same meaning, used to count the amount of prayers. Strange how seemingly distant traditions seem to entangle themselves into a common ritual. As if a sophia perennis exists, connecting the many roads leading to the Great Mystery.

Olkhon Island in Lake Baikal is an important area for the tradition local shaman religion. In the background is Shaman's Rock, and in front scraps tied to the tree take prayers to the wind.

Traditionally, prayer flags come in sets of five: one in each of five colors. The five colors are arranged from left to right in a specific order: blue, white, red, green, and yellow. The five colors represent the five elements[ and the Five Pure Lights. Different elements are associated with different colors for specific traditions, purposes and sadhana. Blue symbolizes the sky and space, white symbolizes the air and wind, red symbolizes fire, green symbolizes water, and yellow symbolizes earth. According to Traditional Tibetan medicine, health and harmony are produced through the balance of the five elements.
The center of a prayer flag traditionally features a Lung ta (powerful or strong horse) bearing three flaming jewels (specifically ratna) on its back. The Ta is a symbol of speed and the transformation of bad fortune to good fortune. The three flaming jewels symbolize the Buddha, the Dharma (Buddhist teachings), and the Sangha (Buddhist community): the three cornerstones of Tibetan philosophical tradition.
Surrounding the Lung ta are various versions of approximately 400 traditional mantras, each dedicated to a particular deity. These writings include mantras from three of the great Buddhist Bodhisattvas: Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche), Avalokiteśvara (Chenrezig, the bodhisattva of compassion, and the patron of the Tibetan people), and Manjusri.
In addition to mantras, prayers for a long life of good fortune are often included for the person who mounts the flags.
Images or the names of four powerful animals, also known as the Four Dignities, adorn each corner of a flag: the dragon, the garuda, the tiger, and the snowlion.
Capture: A local Moroccan man praying his Asr prayers in the desert. I would have joined him if there was a place to wash nearby. I am aware there is a way to cleanse yourself with sand, but I did not familiarize myself with the process before hand. Maybe next time?

The Ivolginsky Monastery is the center of Buddhism in Russia. It is a beautiful temple opened for the visitors. Nowadays it also includes a famous Buddhist University "Dashi Choikhorling" (the name derives from the Tibetan language and means "the land of Happy teaching". Here Buddhist monks-scientists, specialists in Tibetan and Old Mongolian languages and orientalists are taught.
A bead is a small, decorative object that is pierced for threading or stringing. Beads range in size from under a millimeter to over a centimeter or sometimes several centimeters in diameter.
At the Islamic Shopping Network many kinds of prayer beads are available. Prayer beads or Rosaries are used by members of various religions such as Islam. In Islam, prayer beads are referred to as Misbaha or Tasbih, and contain 99 beads, corresponding to the 99 Names of Allah. Sometimes only 33 beads are used, in which case one would cycle through them three times to equal 99. Use of the misbaha to count prayers and recitations is an evolution of the practice of the Holy Prophet Muhammad and his daughter Fatima Al-Zahra practice of using the fingers of the right hand to keep track.
