A prayer bead necklace left behind by a child at the gate to the ancient church of St. Mary & St. Lawrence in Great Waltham village; a touching reminder of how a simple gesture can become a powerful symbol of faith, especially when coming from a child. It may have been merely lost and placed there by a passerby so the owner could find and retrieve it, or perhaps it was left as a votive offering as many such tokens are in spiritual places. Either way it was a small striking detail noticed when entering the passage to the old churchyard.

While my models were changing I was walking around scoping out potential spots to do some kind of shot, and this was literally at the head of the trail into the woods we had just been in.

After much seeking, Loong and Tai and I finally found the Prayer Tower Totem Pole. It was created by a crazy eco dude in the 70s. Which is probably exactly what you were thinking.

Bounds said: ‘Prayer should not be regarded as a duty which must be performed, but rather as a privilege to be enjoyed.’”

The Zouche Chapel is missed by most visitors to the Minster, hidden behind a door in the south choir aisle beyond a sign discouraging anyone but those seeking private prayer, I thus made sure it was empty before going inside.
The chapel is a low vaulted space, its scale in complete contrast to the rest of the cathedral, and a perfect place to escape the crowds and noise of the main church. Its windows contain some delightful small vignettes and quarries removed from larger windows in the Minster where they had been used as patch repairs and almost unnoticeable at great heights. Since the restoration of the windows in the 1950s select pieces have been installed here at eye-level, and include some beautiful, whimsical and entertaining examples of medieval glass painting.
Towering over the rooftops of York is England's greatest medieval cathedral, the largest medieval church north of the Alps (Cologne is larger still but not entirely medieval).
York Minster never fails to impress, it is an awe inspiring spectacle. It may lack the intimate charm of many of our cathedrals but makes up in sheer magnificence and the acres of medieval glass that survive within.
