The Hyundai Tucson had two things going for it when it replaced the ix35 last year: sharp styling, and a so-bad-it's-good ad campaign that got people talking. But flashy looks and marketing pizazz don't count for much in the mid-sized SUV arena if they aren't backed up by day-to-day practicality. So how does the Tucson stack up as a family car?

This is the underground car park for the Buttermarket shopping centrre.

One night in 2007, when the car park and shops were closed, the lady in charge left her office to empty a coin machine. She returned quickly to the office without emptying it when she sensed movement. Anxiously she rang her boss, who came over within ten minutes. She let him into the premises and when they looked around, but no source of movement could be found. Locking up, he said he would ask to see the CCTV footage the next morning. Imagine their horror at seeing the shadows on the wall either side of the machine moving away with frenetic activity on the time-coded video. The boss said he did not know what to think. There were no windows, trees or moving lamps down there or anything else to explain the phenomenon. Deciding on practicality, he announced that no lone worker would be put in that such a poor situation to handle cash and would ensure a second member of staff would be on hand in future.

Generously hosted by Greenwich Co-operative Development Agency, Paul Rhodes of the eponymous artisan bakery and his head baker Yann Legallais kindly gave up their day to pass bread making skills on to thirteen would-be bakers from public sector kitchens. Tracey Simmons from Pabulum Catering then spoke about the practicalities of Real Bread in a public sector catering situation.

The two constants in India amidst all the economical and social changes: Spirituality and Practicality at the expense of aesthetics.

The modern clean lines of the new Parumala church have been <ahem> modified with plastic sheets (presumably to keep the rain out). Practical? Yes, but probably not in keeping with what the architect (Charles Correa) had in mind.

The patron saint of the church, Saint Gregorios of Parumala, is the first canonised saint from Kerala.

The 1st Series (1963-1966) was the fastest saloon of its time and was groundbreaking, opening a new segment in the automotive market. Adolfo and Omar Orsi conceived th Quattroporte, a car that combined the brand's racing heritage with the practicality and sophistication of a saloon. Giulio Alfieri, a key figure in Maserati's success, was entrusted with engineering, while Pietro Frua penned the design. The clean, elegant lines exuded understated sophistication while incorporating aerodynamics principles to enhance performance. It proved that a car could be a high-performance, luxurious, practical saloon. Its success inspired competitors like Mercedes, Jaguar and BMW to develop their own high-performance sedans, setting the stage for an entirely new class of automobiles.

Well, it's been a while!

There's been far too much going on, not bad - just busy, but flickr has had to take a back seat, which isn't a bad thing every now and then. Anyway, I'm in Barcelona at the moment (again), so I offer a set of images from La Catedral, a vast soaring edifice in the old (medieval) city. The astute amongst you will notice that these are digital. No I haven't moved away from film, I'm still shooting it, plenty of it in fact, but the film shots are likely to be some time away because of the practicalities involved. So you'll just have to make do with nice conventional digi shots for now. (Although I am working on less conventional digi shots too! ;)

I know I owe loads of flickr/emails. I'm working on it.

Shortly about me:

It’s my passion to create stories and bring back pictures of events, people and places that are rarely seen. It’s a combination of exploration, exposition and artistry that together create a life of adventure and excitement.

In my work it is imperative for me that information be accurate and the images must be respectful of the subject and viewer. My goal is to combine creativity with practicality to capture the best possible images to document events, tell a story, meet the picture editor's deadlines.

FurugiStar is my Etsy shop which was born of a fascination with the thoughts and feelings evoked by handmade antique fabrics. Textiles with a connection to the artisans and former owners hold a richness that new fabrics just don't possess.

I identify with the Japanese concept of 'yu yo no bi' - beauty in practicality, and 'mottainai' - no waste. These concepts have great relevance to the sustainable fashion movement to which I hope my shop contributes, at least in a small way.

My shop specialises in Japanese textiles of history and substance. Together with antiques and vintage items found in and around Tokyo.

I am interested in boro and antique noragi (collectible Japanese peasant / farming wear). If you are looking for Japanese indigo, kasuri / ikat, shibori or boro fabrics then keep me bookmarked because I am always on the look-out for these.

My descriptions often refer to periods in Japanese history. Please use this for reference:

Meiji Era: 1868 - 1912

Taisho Era: 1912 - 1926

Like York Integrated Electronic Control Centre (IECC), Tyneside IECC dates from British Rail's East Coast Main Line (ECML) modernisation and electrification project of the 1980s.

Network Rail originally planned for Tyneside IECC to close, and its area of control be transferred to York Rail Operations Centre (ROC) during the early 2020's. However, several factors - including cost, practicality, future resignalling strategy and the impact of the Covid pandemic causing mass staff absences in large workplaces - led to a change of plan.

Tyneside IECC therefore never migrated to York ROC, but was instead refurbished with provision made for extra workstations, saw rearrangement of the existing workstations on the Operations Floor, replacement of the original IECC signalling control equipment with WestCad, and - curiously - renaming to Tyneside ROC.

Tyneside ROC very much retains the character of an IECC, has none of the typical characteristics of a ROC, but equally within Network Rail we also have several locations which very much resemble ROCs but are not named as such.

Tyneside IECC's area of control on renaming was the ECML from the fringe with York ROC north of Northallerton at Danby Wiske through Darlington, Durham and Newcastle to the fringe with Morpeth SB north of Plessey. The busy section of railway - much of which is shared with or exclusive to Tyne & Wear Metro operations - from Newcastle to beyond Sunderland, including the entire South Hylton branch, was also under Tyneside IECC's control. Parts of the Shildon branch, Dinsdale Lines towards Eaglescliffe and the Tyne Valley Line towards Blaydon were controlled from here too.

Since renaming, Tyneside ROC still retains the existing Darlington, Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle and Sunderland workstations, but resignalling of the Blyth & Tyne network in connection with 2024's return of passenger services to the area - marketed as the "Northumberland Line" - saw the additional Ashington workstation commissioned.

This photo shows part of the Newcastle workstation, which controls the busy railway through Newcastle Central station, past Heaton Depot, Benton Junction and on towards the Morpeth area.

At the time of this photo in January 2024, Newcastle workstation fringed with Gateshead workstation (twice - basically south of the King Edward VII and High Level Bridges across the River Tyne), Heaton Depot's busy Control Tower (actually a Portakabin type structure these days), Morpeth SB and Newsham SB.

My visit to Tyneside on this occasion was to learn more about the interaction between the ROC and Heaton Control Tower, in connection with a secondment I was on at the time, so this photo shows a close up of the Heaton area, and also the fringes with Morpeth SB and Newsham SB. A photo giving an overview of the entire workstation can be seen via the link below.

www.flickr.com/photos/194923731@N02/54312146383/in/album-...

As mentioned above, the Blyth & Tyne network was resignalled during 2024, Newsham SB was one of the boxes to be closed and so Newcastle workstation now instead fringes with Ashington workstation at the other end of the Operations Floor.

Dr. Simeone explained that from 1915 to 1920 the concept of a sports car was submerged by the rigors of a great world war. Coming out of this tragedy a few car companies early on made a true sports car where speed and sport supervene over practicality. A British, an Italian, and an American example of this early reversion to performance were demonstrated. Featured were the 1921 Vauxhall 30/98E Velox Tourer, 1924 Lancia Lambda Third Series Tourer, and the 1922 Paige 6-66 Daytona Speedster.

This strong wardrobe is built with beauty but also practicality in mind. Its beautiful wood grain shines through in its sleek straight cut lines. It comes equipped with two large doors with plenty of hanging space ideal for extra long hanging garments with a large deep filled draw underneath, ideal for practical bedroom storage. This solid Oak wardrobe has been finished with a eye catching rustic appeal ideal for lovers of worn wood. Please note the Rustic Solid Oak range is darker than all our other oak ranges.

This wardrobe comes in three parts that are easily assembled in order help get the piece up stairs through hallways.

This picture is of my grandfather Hiram Plunkett posing with his brand new, 1950 Chevrolet. Chevrolet, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick and Cadillac, in that order, were the names of General Motor’s five brands of cars in the 1950s. Americans learned the names of these cars in price order. The Chevrolet was the car for a young couple just getting started, without a lot of money, and possible a child on the way. Ideally, as the couple matured, the husband would be promoted and be able to move up on the social ladder, and the Chevrolet was traded for a higher class car, such as a Pontiac.

In addition cars representing social class, it was often a popular fad to get your picture made in front of your boyfriend or parents car when they bought a new one because it was an imitation of advertisements seen in popular magazines at the time. A majority of 1950s cars placed style over engineering, form ahead of function, and whimsy ahead of practicality. In the 1950s there were about 45 million households and 50 million cars. In 2000 there were about 110 million households , almost doubling the number from 1950 and 200 million cars, quadrupling the number from 1950.

There isn't much to say about the back, except that since my sister in law does have to get dressed herself and wear this to work, I went for practicality rather than historical authenticity and put in a zipper and elastic at the waist.

These Kinnauri Buddhist women were attending the P'howa teaching (transference of consciousness after death) of Ayang Rinpoche in Bodh Gaya, Bihar. They are always all-smiles, and always identifiable by their distinctive green topis. I also noticed that the men and women Kinnauris wear almost identical dress - topi, kurta, baggy salwar, a woolen waistcoat (no matter how hot it gets) and a shawl. I like the practicality and "tomboyish" quality of their dress.

Dr. Simeone explained that from 1915 to 1920 the concept of a sports car was submerged by the rigors of a great world war. Held founding chair in Social Administration at LSE

Extracts from ‘Obituaries: Richard Titmuss’ by Howard Glennerster in LSE Magazine, November 1973, No46, p.7

‘Looking through some photographs of Richard Titmuss recently I came across one taken during the last war, in the crypt of St. Pauls. There, complete with tin hat, he was holding a seminar with other tin-hatted fire watchers and members of the red Cross. It seemed to personify the values he himself believed grew out of the war experience- a heightened social consciousness and a sense of unity which were the theme of his major work (Problems of Social Policy, 1949)on social policy during the Second World War. It was soon after this book that he was invited to take a chair at the LSE as Professor of Social Administration in 1950…

He believed that it was an academic’s job to participate in policy making and administration as well as to be a critic. He gave many of his days and evenings to official meetings, informal seminars of civil servants, high and lowly. He devoted hours of his time to Royal Commissions, to Labour Study Groups, to the Community Relations Commission and the Supplementary Benefits Commission. He was fascinated by the problem of making large social service bureaucracies humane and sensitive to individual human need. He acted as a kind of bridge between government and academic life helping each to understand the other’s perspective. It was this which lay at the root of his influence on policy and gave his whole department that unique mixture of reforming zeal and practicality.

As I began to set these thoughts down two events occurred together in the same week. The first was that the House of Commons Select Committee on Tax Credits welcomed a proposal that single parent families should receive a special social security benefit and also receive tax credit. This idea was one that Richard had pressed and argued for as a member of the Finer Committee on one-parent families. Indeed he was working on it in his last days. In the same week the Department of Health, Education and Welfare in the United States announced that they were to launch a national voluntary blood donor scheme. It was a proposal which sprang directly from the influence of his last book – The Gift Relationship.

These were the kinds of memorial that Richard Titmuss would have appreciated most.’

This is another old Gitane Pro Super Corsa. I've had this one since 1973! Of course it has gone through many rejuvinations and configurations since then, and it is now dressed as a light day-tourer, with a few modern, non-french components, for practicality's sake.Took these pix on a nice sunny Saturday afternoon in Seattle

The Mazda6 was redesigned for 2013, and even though its interior is ho-hum (and cramped) and it doesn't have the mainstream appeal/practicality of cars like Honda Accord, it is fun to drive and a good choice in the midsize category.

While the previous Mazda6 shared platforms with the Ford Fusion, the current one stands alone thanks to Ford switching the Fusion to the Mondeo platform. Also, the Mazda6 is no longer made in Flat Rock, Michigan (that plant is now handed over to building various Fords) - production returned to Hiroshima, Japan.

Range towers offer that protection with various features designed to promote safety and practicality, including:

Industrial grade polyurethane acrylic paint to resist nicks and scratches.

Galvanized steel construction to keep the tower rust free and resistant to weather conditions.

Guard railings on all stairs and platforms for additional safety.

All of our prefabricated towers are designed in strict compliance with local codes, including the codes under the IBC 2006 that govern the standards for seismic ground activity. These strict standards ensure a safe product.

1. As mentioned before, Heather loves forests and nature. Being outside gives her the feeling of freedom.

2. She loves coloured hair of all sorts and styles. For herself, she prefers a short, bob-like cut for practicality, and the colour purple.

3. Heather is very well spoken and good with words, when she decides to use them. Poetic talent is apparent in her but she has never found the will to explore it.

4. Being athletic, Heather was always excellent in sports (one of the few classes where she actually did fullfil her potential). Not so much the ball or team sports, but she loved cross-country, triathletic disciplins and gymnastics. Where you didn't need to be near so many people.

5. Heather's wardrobe is based on functionality and mood. When she feels insecure she will constantly wear the same items (her galaxy dress is one of these favourites). She does posess a lot of black clothing, but she can't be considered "goth" in the traditional sense. Jewellery or any kind of accessories are non-existent, since it would just bother her while climbing trees.

6. She is obsessed with comic books. She loves Marvel and all their superheroes: Captain America, Iron Man, the X-Men.... Her favourite character is Wolverine.

7. Her music taste isn't very spread-out. She loves dark, romantic or symphonic tunes. Occasionally she will listen to 60s rock because it gives her a sense of home and safety.

Her favourite bands are Nightwish and The Beatles.

8. Heather isn't unhappy with her looks, she just doesn't consider herself "beautiful" in the common sense. She will always wear the same make-up look: Black or brown smokey eyes with a dark-tinted lip.

9. Heather has an extremely laid-back attitude. But in an unmotivated, unpreoccupied sort of way. Her insecurity feelings often overpower her and she feels like she can do nothing but wait until she feels better. Other than reading comics and being outside, she hasn't got any other hobbies. Her parents blame it all on laziness of youth and such nonsense. Heather is greatly misunderstood by her parents, but has no motivation to change anything about it.

10. Heather can't stand her own name.

Sherri Warner Hunter designed the Children’s Courtyard creating mosaics titled Rain Forest Treasures. Hunter combined whimsical and practicality in her sculptural seating. Because the courtyard is located beside the children’s area in the library but will be accessible to all visitors, it was important for Hunter that the benches and sculptures inspire a sense of discovery for all age groups.

I was inspired to make this because almost everything I do on the computer is in the "portrait" format - from web browsing to word documenting to print-based graphic design. A sidebar seems like a better use of space than a taskbar.

This is our 1940s-vintage O'Keefe and Merritt stove. We purchased the gas range around 2003 when we remodeled our kitchen. It added a lot of style to the kitchen, and we got many compliments on it. After using it for 10 years, however, we are reluctantly getting a new gas range with a larger oven--practicality wins out over looks this time.

These wheels were built for practicality and durability. Shimano 105 (5500) 9 speed hubs... Wheelsmith butted spokes (1.99 - 1.74 -1.99 mm)... Sun CR-18 rims... Kenda tires... Schwalb presta tubes.

Not super light weight, the tires weigh more than many others available. The hubs are practical for 130 mm rear spacing on any modern road bike, are durable and also moderately priced. And, they can be used with modern Shimano 8 or 9 or 10 speed cassettes, so they offer very versitile gear options to match any terrain.

I discovered this about a year ago after getting home from helping Angela move to her summer internship last year. I've left it up since then as a constant reminder of how great she is, but practicality has finally won out over sentimentality, and I had to erase it.

Here it stands, a testament to how much of a softy I am. :)

My latest addition to my Classic Army replica of the DSA Arms SA58 Tactical Carbine - the BE Meyer style 'blackout' flash hider.

This is the full steel King Arms replica flash hider. It is one mighty piece of kit!

Apart from the practicalities of the real steal version of this flash hider I like it because of it's chunky looks - and it harks back to the old L1A1 flash hider. This aggressive look seems to go well with the stark and angular SA58.

One thing to note about the King Arms replica is that it comes in a dark gun-metal grey finish and not a black satin finish. This suited my Classic Army SA58 fine as it has several components in a similar grey colour - but if you have a more traditional black finish on your AEG you may find the colour doesnt match so well.

This item was purchased from UNCompany in Hong Kong for $27.

Replica of the "Charlotte Dundas" at Arbroath Harbour. The Charlotte Dundas is regarded as the world's "first practical steamboat", the first towing steamboat and the boat that demonstrated the practicality of steam power for ships.

In 1801 William Symington patented a horizontal steam engine directly linked to a crank, and got the support of Lord Dundas to build a steamboat which would become famous as the Charlotte Dundas, named in honour of his Lordship's daughter.

The first sailing was on the Forth and Clyde canal in Glasgow on January 4, 1803, with Lord Dundas and a few of his relatives and friends on board. After some improvements, in March 1803 the Charlotte Dundas towed two 70 ton barges 30 km (almost 20 miles) along the Forth and Clyde Canal to Glasgow, and despite "a strong breeze right ahead" which stopped all other canal boats it took only nine and a quarter hours, giving an average speed of about 3 km/h (2 mph). This demonstrated the practicality of steam power for towing boats.

Hello ^^

I've got this collecting hobby for about 7 years. I collect and photograph various types of doll (ig @ dollsbr), but I'd always liked flickr because of the stories people create for their dolls and it's so cool to follow their development of the characters! A few months ago I met the ai dolls and fell in love with their cuteness and the practicality of the size lol. During all those years I never managed to develop the personality of my dolls, and with the ai dolls I could do it so easily! Th e one in the picture is Isis, my shy little girl (ai Doll Holly), and I'm waiting for her sister Iris (Coreopsis) to arrive to develop better their characters and relationship. Both already have definite personalities and I think I'll have a lot of fun to work with them here, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! (My account will be dedicated only to them but in instagram you can find photos of the others!)

Large scale Brutalist architecture in modern China. The Xicun Courtyard in Chengdu is a striking example of Brutalist architecture, known for its raw, concrete aesthetic and minimalist design. Built during the 1970s, this residential complex stands out for its stark geometric forms and rugged appearance, which are hallmarks of the Brutalist movement. The use of exposed concrete and functional design elements reflects the architectural philosophy of the time, emphasizing practicality and the expression of structural elements. Despite its initially austere appearance, the Xicun Courtyard has become a notable landmark in Chengdu, appreciated for its bold and distinctive style that contrasts with more conventional architectural designs.
