Becoming an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is a rewarding career choice for individuals with a passion for helping others. EMTs are vital members of the emergency medical services (EMS) team, providing life-saving care and transportation to patients in need. If you are interested in pursuing a career as an EMT, this guide will provide you with a step-by-step approach to get started.

Table of Contents

What is an EMT?

An Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is a trained healthcare professional who provides care to patients in emergency situations. EMTs are often the first responders on the scene, offering critical care and transportation to individuals needing urgent medical attention.

EMTs are vital in the emergency medical services (EMS) system. They are responsible for assessing patients, providing basic life support (BLS), administering necessary medical interventions, and stabilizing patients for transportation to healthcare facilities.

EMTs are trained to handle various medical emergencies, including traumatic injuries, cardiac arrest, respiratory distress, and other life-threatening conditions. They are skilled in performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), controlling bleeding, managing fractures, administering oxygen, and providing emergency medications when necessary.

EMTs work closely with other members of the healthcare team, such as paramedics, nurses, and physicians, to ensure seamless patient care. They communicate patient information, vital signs, and treatment interventions to the receiving healthcare facility to facilitate continuity of care.

In summary, an EMT is a dedicated healthcare professional trained to respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations. Their skills, knowledge, and compassionate care are crucial in providing life-saving interventions and ensuring the well-being of patients in critical conditions.

How Long Does It Take To Become an EMT?

The duration of EMT training can vary depending on the level of certification you are pursuing and the specific program you choose. Becoming an EMT-Basic typically requires the shortest amount of training compared to other EMS levels. Most EMT-B programs usually range from 120 to 150 hours of training. These programs are designed to provide students with the fundamental knowledge and skills needed to handle emergency situations and deliver basic life support care.

EMT-B training programs often include online and in-classroom instruction, hands-on skills practice, and clinical experience in an ambulance or healthcare setting. The curriculum covers patient assessment, airway management, CPR, splinting, medical emergencies, and more.

Education and Training

High School Diploma

Before embarking on your journey to become an EMT, you are required to have a high school diploma or equivalent.

EMT Programs and Training

To become an EMT, you must enroll in an EMT program. These programs are typically offered by technical schools, community colleges, and hospitals. Look for accredited programs that meet the standards set by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) and that are accredited.

EMT training programs consist of both classroom instruction and hands-on clinical experience. The curriculum covers topics such as emergency medical care, basic life support (BLS), CPR certifications, and skills required to provide life-saving care. You will learn to assess patients, control bleeding, perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and more.

EMT Certification

Upon completion of your EMT training program, you will be eligible to take state and NREMT certification exams. Not all EMTs carry both certifications, there are benefits to holding both certifications.

The NREMT exam consists of a cognitive examination and a psychomotor exam. The cognitive examination assesses your knowledge of EMS operations, emergency management, medical knowledge, and the skills required to be an effective EMT. The psychomotor examination evaluates your ability to perform essential EMT skills, such as assessing and managing patients, providing basic life support, and transporting patients safely.

EMT Recertification

Certification is not a one-time achievement. It is important for EMTs to undergo recertification to ensure their skills and knowledge remain up to date. The NREMT requires EMTs to recertify every two years to maintain their certification status, and each state has its own standards for recertification.

Recertification typically involves completing continuing education courses and demonstrating competency in essential EMT skills. EMTs must accumulate a certain number of continuing education hours, which may vary depending on the state.

EMTS must keep track of their recertification deadlines and fulfill the necessary requirements on time. Failure to recertify within the designated timeframe may result in the expiration of certification, which could limit job opportunities and require additional steps to reinstate the certification.

EMTs should stay informed about recertification guidelines specific to their state or NREMT guidelines. By staying proactive and maintaining their certification, EMTs can continue providing high-quality, life-saving care to patients in need.

Salary Expectations for EMTs

EMTs play a crucial role in providing emergency medical care and saving lives in emergency situations. While salary can vary based on factors such as experience, location, and level of certification, here is a general overview of the salary expectations for EMTs:

Median Annual Salary

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for EMTs was $36,650 as of the latest available data in 2020. This means that half of the EMTs earned more than this amount, while the other half earned less.

It’s important to note that salary can vary significantly based on factors such as geographic location and the type of employer. EMTs working in metropolitan areas or for government agencies may have higher salary prospects than those working in rural areas or for private ambulance services.

Career Advancement and Experience

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook for EMTs and paramedics is projected to grow at a faster-than-average rate. The increasing demand for emergency medical care and the need to replace retiring personnel contribute to this positive job outlook.

EMTs can enhance their earning potential through career advancement and gaining experience. By acquiring additional certifications, such as EMT-Intermediate or EMT-Paramedic, EMTs can expand their scope of practice and qualify for higher-paying positions. With their advanced skills and responsibilities, paramedics generally earn higher salaries than EMT-Basics.

Furthermore, experience in the field can lead to salary increases. As EMTs gain more practical knowledge, proficiency in critical care, and a proven track record of delivering high-quality patient care, they become more valuable assets to employers and may be eligible for higher wages.

Other Considerations

While salary is an important factor, other aspects of compensation for EMTs are worth considering. Some employers may offer benefits such as health insurance, retirement plans, paid time off, and opportunities for overtime or shift differentials.

Additionally, working in the EMS field provides the satisfaction of making a meaningful impact on people’s lives and being part of a dedicated healthcare team. The intrinsic rewards and fulfillment of the job should also be considered alongside monetary compensation.

A Day in the Life of an EMT

Being an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is an exciting and dynamic profession. It is important to note that the daily routine of an EMT can be highly unpredictable. Emergencies can arise at any time, requiring EMTs to be ready to respond promptly and adapt to different situations.

Here’s a glimpse into what a typical day in the life of an EMT might look like:

Preparedness and Shift Start

The day begins with the EMT arriving at the designated EMS station or ambulance base. They start by checking the equipment and supplies, ensuring everything is in working order and properly stocked. EMTs review the daily shift assignments, familiarize themselves with the specific ambulance they will use, and gather essential equipment and supplies.

Receiving Calls and Dispatch

Once the shift begins, EMTs may receive emergency calls through a dispatch system. Dispatchers provide details about the location and nature of the emergency, enabling EMTs to respond promptly. EMTs communicate with their partner and other members of the EMS team to coordinate their response.

Responding to Emergencies

EMTs quickly assess the situation and safely navigate the ambulance to the emergency scene. Upon arrival, they evaluate the patient’s condition, obtain vital signs, and gather relevant medical history. EMTs employ their knowledge and skills to deliver immediate medical care, including administering CPR, providing oxygen, immobilizing fractures, controlling bleeding, or managing airway issues.

Patient Care and Transportation

EMTs provide essential medical care to stabilize patients on-site. They monitor vital signs, administer medications if necessary, and communicate with the receiving healthcare facility to update them on the patient’s condition. EMTs carefully transfer the patient to the ambulance, ensuring their safety and comfort, and transport them to the appropriate healthcare facility while continuously monitoring their condition and providing additional care as needed.

Documentation and Reporting

Throughout the day, EMTs maintain accurate and thorough documentation of their interactions with patients. This includes recording vital signs, procedures performed, medications administered, and any other relevant information. Accurate documentation ensures continuity of care and assists in medical record keeping.

Restocking and Decontamination

After each call, EMTs restock and clean the ambulance, ensuring it is prepared for the next emergency. They dispose of medical waste appropriately and follow proper decontamination protocols to maintain a safe and sanitary work environment.

This weekend River Dance is performing at TPAC in Nashville. Dancers, from my sisters' Irish dance school, have backstage passes... it should be a lot of fun!

More practical knowledge: River Dance is NOT the same thing as Irish Dance. River Dance is a show, it's dramatic, and untraditional. Irish is definitely traditional. Also, neither of these dance forms are Clogging or Tap! If you imply that they are the dancers will hurt you! ;)

Techne

One angle in one mirror is not enough, movement is never mute, it’s a language. It’s a series of energetic shapes, like words writing sentences, like poems, like prayers, like spells.

(Suspiria, 2017)

Techne is a project that explores visual performativity of the body in space. This concept is framed by rave culture, a subculture described by Simon Reynolds as being based around sensations and fascination rather than truth and meaning. As with most subcultures, rave culture is a fluid construct in that it is part of a societal structure of humans. The footage showcases performers displaying three movements that transcend into each other. While the movements were chosen by the performers themselves, they built upon prior approaches in order to achieve these during three preparation workshops. The movements manifest the subjective narration of each performer. The individual body stands in relation to the plural body and therefore creates the fluid information of the space in time.

Techne refers to the Greek term formulating practical knowledge. Raving, which among other things describes the act of dancing to techno music, might in fact be one way of practicing Techne. It is a self-reflective understanding of emotions, mediated and expressed through the body. The medium knows the message.

The installation invites the viewer to step in and decide which perspective to take on. Not only will they therefore miss out on two other perspectives, but they will also be in a state of constant observation created through small performative interventions. It challenges the viewer as the subject, while simultaneously revealing how different angles of a representation open up its ontological event horizon. What is caused by the change of perspective in a performative space and how much of it can even be considered representational?

The texts are transcriptions of conversations that happened during the process of interviewing music and rave related people. The main focus here is on the individuals experience of music, the subcultural function of raves and the relationship between technology and music. While all the interviews are similar at the core, they also complement each other. Critical subjects like sexism, racism and drug abuse are themes that are essential in the discussion surrounding rave culture. Each conversation partner therefore brings their personal relationship with the culture in and offers a different angle on it.

Techne is a work made possible through a collaborative effort. It would not have been possible without the incredible communal energy of every person that participated in the project. I cannot express how thankful I am for the trust and passion each of them gave.

By Miao Xiao

Every brother and sister in the Lord has their own different experiences of coming before God. However, so similar are most Christians’ experiences of faith in God after believing in the Lord: We read the Bible and pray to the Lord day after day, go to the church for gatherings regularly, spread the Lord Jesus’ salvation to our relatives and friends ardently, bear the cross, practice tolerance, patience, and loving others as ourselves and so on. In doing so, we think that we are believing in God. Moreover, we are envious of those brothers and sisters who know the Bible thoroughly, sacrifice and labor tirelessly for the Lord. Most of us think this kind of faith in God should be commended by Him. And we think if we believe in God this way, we will surely be raptured into the kingdom of heaven when the Lord Jesus returns.

What Kind of Faith Is After God’s Will?

One day, I read a passage of words in a spiritual book, which mentions that this kind of faith in God isn’t in line with God’s will. This is what I couldn’t be receptive to by reading the Bible. The spiritual book says: “You may think believing in God is about suffering, or doing many things for Him, or for the peace of your flesh, or for everything to go well for you, for everything to be comfortable—but none of these are purposes people should have for believing in God. If that is what you believe, then your perspective is incorrect and you simply cannot be perfected. … Even though people with religious beliefs have faith in God, they don’t seek dispositional change, don’t pursue knowledge of God, and only seek the interests of their flesh. Many among you have faiths that belong in the category of religious convictions. That is not true faith in God.” These words are practical. After reading these words, I got to know that it’s an incorrect viewpoint of believing in God that believing in God is about nothing but just suffering and doing things for Him, or for pursuing fleshly peace, or for gaining grace and blessings. Besides, we believe that the belief in God is about running, expending, and toiling for the Lord and blindly pursuing fleshly interests with the intent to receive blessings. Comparing our viewpoints to these words, I knew that our belief isn’t the true faith in God.

This is just like the belief of some followers of the Lord Jesus. They preached, worked, bore the cross, suffered and cast away. However, they didn’t focus on practicing the Lord’s words in real life but set aside His words and usually acted based on their will and personal likes. Especially when in the church, they coveted fame, profit and status, blindly exalted and testified to themselves by explaining the Bible, and even created factions and set up independent kingdoms. At last, they brought brothers and sisters in front of themselves. In God’s eyes, they were hypocrites and enemies of God. Thinking back, God shows us clear requirements in His work, in which there are His intentions for us. Further, He is for the purpose of achieving a certain result among us. If we just focus on working and suffering for the Lord and keep to some outward practices but don’t emphasize practicing or experiencing His words, then even if we believe in the Lord this way for many years, we still can’t understand the truth, much less come to know God. More importantly, such manner of faith in God can’t be approved by God, but instead, it will be condemned by Him. It’s just as the Lord Jesus says, “Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in your name? and in your name have cast out devils? and in your name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess to them, I never knew you: depart from me, you that work iniquity” (Matthew 7:22-23).

I remembered that the Lord Jesus once said to His disciples, “If you continue in my word, then are you my disciples indeed” (John 8:31). Similarly, this spiritual book says, “Believing in God is for the sake of satisfying Him and for living out the disposition He requires, so that His actions and glory may be manifested through this group of unworthy people. That is the correct perspective for believing in God, and also the goal you should seek.” From these words, we can understand that only by following God’s way and practicing God’s words, and thereupon satisfying God with living out and witness, can such manner of faith in God conform to God’s intentions and requirements. This is just the right viewpoint of believing in God, as well as the goal we believers in God should pursue. This made me think of Peter. He offered his entire life to God. Even in tiny things in life like what he ate, wore, and where he lived, he never acted as he pleased. In all he did, he practiced the truth with a heart of loving God to satisfy Him. Peter shepherd churches in strict accordance with the Lord’s will and requirements. Besides, he didn’t pray to God for his own gain or loss but only wished to love God within himself. Peter paid attention to listening to and practicing God’s words, finally submitting even to death and loving God to the utmost. Due to this, God gave him the key of the kingdom of heaven. Hence, Peter’s faith was most approved by God. There is also Job. In the Old Testament, it records that God called Job a perfect and an upright man in the earth who feared God and shunned evil. Trials coming to Job, he lost all his possessions and sons and daughters, and his body became covered with sores. Then he could come before God with a heart of reverence for Him and seek how to satisfy Him. Through his seeking, he believed God’s sovereignty and determined to worship God and praise His name no matter whether God rewarded or smote him. Eventually, he stood witness for God, causing Satan to be humiliated in defeat. From these we can see that their faith is the genuine faith in God, and we should follow the example of it. Now I finally have some practical knowledge of the true faith in God. I wish that God has mercy on me and guides me to go ever deeper into my pursuit of the truth, so that I can walk the path of believing in God according to His words. Only so can I have the opportunity to be raptured into the kingdom of heaven by the Lord.

In a Romanian language class for Ukrainian refugees, the question arose: "What is Moldova like and what are its people like?" Their enthusiastic responses spoke volumes about their experience and integration into Moldovan society.

Meet Zinaida Nerubașcenco, a resilient 70-year-old, recalls her escape from the war-torn Donbass region, arriving in Moldova with only a small suitcase. Moldova embraced her with open arms, offering assistance and empathy at every turn. Moldovans' welcoming nature made her feel at home, and the Romanian language classes played a vital role in overcoming fear and anxiety.

For Sofia Prisăcari, settling in Bălți with her Moldovan husband and daughter meant embracing the language and culture of her new home. Learning Romanian became a priority for her, as she envisions a future within Moldova's borders. She sees her daughter growing up bilingual, bridging her parents' native languages and the language of the country they live in.

These language classes, organized by the European Union and UNDP under the "Mayors for Economic Growth" initiative, have empowered refugees to integrate further into Moldovan society. By offering practical knowledge and fostering connections, the program equips participants with the tools they need for their daily lives.

“Be someone’s SUNSHINE when their skies are grey” shows the heart of a person who believed in being blessed to be blessing to the underprivileged and the needy.

Nehru Group of Institutions under the dynamic of leadership of Adv. P. Krishnadas, Managing Trustee and Dr. P. Krishnakumar, CEO & Secretary of NGI have successfully carried out this humble, deep and generous desire of their father Dr. P. K. Das for the ninth consecutive year with a special event on the 15th of December, 2017 marked to celebrate the birthday of the founder mentor.

Founder’s Day saw the Nehru Group of Institutions organizing this one-of-a-kind event of “Best Faculty Award” to recognize, honour and appreciate the hard work, dedication, focus and efforts of faculty from the neighbouring colleges in the state of Tamilnadu, Pondicherry and Kerala to take education to the next level. Going further, the institution after casting a critical eye over 1500 applicants who sent in their resumes and credentials for the prestigious award, under the mentorship of Dr. B. Ilango, Chief Jury, Former Vice Chancellor, Bharathiar University, selected 19 candidates for the category of “Best Faculty Award” and one candidate for the category “Lifetime Achievement Award”. The unbiased selection was not only based on the academic achievements of the pedagogues but also their desire to reach the unreached and underprivileged students and individuals in rural areas, helping them realize their dreams and aspirations.

The event started off with the “Tamil Thai Vaalthu” sung by the students of Nehru College, followed by the welcome address by Dr. B. Anirudhan, Principal of the Nehru Arts & Science College, who applauded the professors for their contribution not only to the field of education but also to the well-being of the community.

Adv. P. Krishnadas, Managing Trustee of Nehru Group of Institutions presided over the function. In his address to the all the dignitaries, participants and audience present at the event, he spoke about India emerging gradually and steadfastly as a country churning out job creators and entrepreneurs rather being jobseekers thus redefining the entire global education system. He put forth his vision and mission to make leaders of the aspiring students by empowering and imparting them with the best of subject, practical knowledge and developing their talents that would help them realize their dreams thus making them a force to reckon with in the new millennium. He concluded by saying,

” Life is short and the passion is big” and expressed his desire to regenerate and reengineer the structure of the education system soon rather than later. He thanked and congratulated the pedagogues for being the role models and mentors of the young minds of the country and also the people of Tamilnadu for their contribution, dedication and belief in bringing changes in the Indian education system.

Dr. Amrutha, Director of Nehru School of Architecture, introduced the distinguished Chief Guest, Dr. Paula Banerjee, Vice Chancellor, the Sanskrit College and University, University of Calcutta, honouring and applauding her endeavours and achievements in the field of Education.

In her speech to the attendees of the event, she began with expressing her regret in being fortunate to meet the founder mentor Dr. P. K. Das. On her being applauded for her honesty in the field of Education, she made known the fact that honesty is a virtue that should be a part of every individual that should be seen in their work throughout their life. She appreciated and applauded Adv. P. Krishnadas, Managing Trustee and Dr. P. Krishnakumar, CEO & Secretary of Nehru Group of Institutions for shouldering the responsibility and keeping the oil in the lamp burning of the dream that the founder mentor Dr. P. K. Das has envisioned for the young minds of the country. She expressed her gratitude to the faculty in striving hard to raise the level of education by their sincere, dedicated and determined approach to bring about a sea of change in the education system as a whole. She emphasised on the importance of research and for India to be self-sufficient rather than being dependent on global help. She gave the example of two famous universities of India, Nalanda and Dakshsheela, for the exemplary guidance and mentorship programs to the needs of learners of south Asia comparing NGI to such famous Universities. She also reiterated the fact that faculty in India should hone their skills and talents and raise their competency level, thus competing with the global standards and needs.

The release of the first draft of the Nehru Group of Institution Newsletter was followed by a brief address by Dr. B. Illango, Chief Jury, Former Vice Chancellor, Bharathiar University, who emphasised the necessity of the young minds receiving indepth training in honing their communication skills along with a practical approach in learning the subject matter of their respective fields of education. He applauded Dr. K. Porsezian, Pondicherry University for his efforts in coming up with equations that would help overcome the effects and challenges left behind by the striking of the deadly catastrophe of Tsunami.

Last but not the least, the dynamic Dr. Krishnakumar, CEO & Secretary of Nehru Group of Institutions, opened the eyes of all those present to the beautiful fact of being a blessing to others thus raising up the standard of GIVING than living by lending a hand of help and hope to those whose hard work and abilities go unrecognized and unseen. He said the “Best Faculty Award” not only bestowed honor to the deserving faculty but also made them responsible in taking the level of education a step further. Furthermore, it encouraged and motivated his college pedagogues to strive harder and make a mark in the lives and hearts of the young minds and society as a whole. The desire to reach out to every deserving faculty throughout the country was next on the agenda of the innumerable events planned for the year 2018. He expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the dignitaries, faculty awardees and their families, organizers, and each one present who made this event a memorable one.

The ceremony closed with the National Anthem with many of the faculty awardees expressing their joy, surprise and gratitude to Nehru Group of Institutions in recognizing and honouring their work.

V Sattui Winery, St. Helena, California, USA

History of the V Sattui Winery:

Dario Sattui remembers visiting Vittorio, his great-grandfather, who continued to live upstairs at the long dormant Bryant Street winery until his death at age 94. "As a small child, my first recollection was the aroma of wine emanating from the old building as soon as I entered," he says. He played among the barrels and ovals in the cellars, stories of the old family wine business ringing in his ears. It was then, Dario believes, that the dream of reopening the winery began.

In 1972, after two years in Europe beyond college, Dario began his apprenticeship at various Napa Valley wineries. He still had his dream, the same dream he'd had as a child. Dario pledged he "would reestablish V. Sattui Winery to its former glory."

But just how to do this was the problem. Dario had almost no capital and little practical knowledge of the wine industry. So he dedicated himself to developing the tools and skills he'd need to make the dream become a reality. Soon Dario had developed a business plan and began looking for prospective investors. Later, he found a parcel of land for sale that had a small walnut orchard with an old house on it. Dario remembers bringing prospective investors to the property telling them, "'Here is where we will build our winery,' all the while afraid that the people living on the property would throw me off for trespassing." Since he couldn't afford to purchase the property outright, he managed to get a lease-option for $500 a month. "The house was in such bad condition we lived in my VW bus for more than a month while making it suitable enough to live in."

Time passed as Dario continued to look for investors, but there were no takers. With his last $500, he paid for one more month on the property. Dario had only raised half the capital he needed to begin the winery, but he managed during that "last" month to talk a Napa real estate broker into buying the property, building a small winery on it, and then leasing it to Dario with an option to purchase it back sometime in the future. Still short of funds, Dario enlisted investors without money, but with the skills needed to help him create the winery building. That summer, July of 1975, they began construction, and it was finished in early 1976.

Renting the winemaking equipment he needed, using his great-grandfather's hand-corking machine and Vittorio's original design for the wine labels, the winery was open for business.

When Dario had lived in Europe, he'd remembered seeing small, family-run neighborhood delis filled with freshly made foods and wonderful selections of cheese. He was able to convert this memory into what was to become the perfect match for great wine, V. Sattui's famous Cheese Shop and Deli. Years passed and the struggle continued. Slowly, the winemaking process improved and success came. However, in those first few years, times were hard and Dario lived frugally, sometimes spending his nights sleeping on the floor of the winery so he could put what money he had into the new business. The original winery building is now the Tasting Room, Cheese Shop and Deli and Gift Shop.

As business grew, Dario began to be able to accumulate the best equipment available.

By 1985, V. Sattui Winery was able to build a beautiful stone winery amid the venerable 250 year-old oaks, reminiscent of the late 19th century wineries in Italy and France. With its two stories, tower, wine caves and underground aging cellars, its completion was a fitting tribute to help celebrate the centennial of Vittorio's dream. That same year, the 34-acre vineyard adjacent to the winery became available.

Renamed Suzanne's Vineyard, after his wife, it was soon joined by Carsi Vineyard in Yountville, followed in 1993 by the 556-acre Henry Ranch property in the Carneros grape-growing region, and then in 1998, a 128-acre ranch in Solano County. These, along with other acquisitions, will in the near future allow V. Sattui Winery to supply over 85% of its grape needs from five very distinct microclimates.

From the very beginning, Dario refused to compromise on the quality of the wine. The production and retailing concept offers insight into the reasons for V. Sattui Winery's success. Dario's vision has always been to fully integrate the process of winemaking from the grape to the consumer. This vertical control over all aspects of viticulture, winemaking, and sales is the future for V. Sattui Winery. It is because of Dario Sattui's dream that it has been able to provide the finest wines possible while continuing to sell them at a fair price directly to its customers.
