The Montana State University Historic District (MSU Historic District) is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places at the statewide level under Criterion A in the area of Education and Agriculture and at the local level in the area of Community Planning and Development. Under the provisions of the 1862 Morrill Act, Montana State University (MSU) provided a high standard of education in agriculture and the mechanical arts as Montanas land-grant institution during its first 75 years, while also extending beyond its mandated subjects into the physical sciences, arts and humanities. Through the provisions of the 1887 Hatch Act and the 1914 Smith-Lever Act, MSU also served Montanas rural communities through the public dissemination of applied agricultural research completed by the Agricultural Experiment Station and practical knowledge on agriculture and home economics compiled through the Agricultural Extension Service. At the local level, MSU had an immeasurable impact on its host city of Bozeman, both in terms of its physical growth and the development of its socio-economic and cultural character. Furthermore, the MSU Historic District is also eligible for listing at the statewide level under Criterion C in the area of Architecture. As a collection of free-standing, high-style buildings designed by many of Montanas leading architects, the MSU Historic District is matched only by Montanas other institutions of higher learning. The district also includes a range of historically significant Victorian, Revivalist, and Modernist styles beginning with the Collegiate Gothic Montana Hall (1896-1898) and extending though the 1967 Roskie Hall, an eleven-story dormitory designed in the futurist Exaggerated Modern (or Googie) style.

Techne

One angle in one mirror is not enough, movement is never mute, it’s a language. It’s a series of energetic shapes, like words writing sentences, like poems, like prayers, like spells.

(Suspiria, 2017)

Techne is a project that explores visual performativity of the body in space. This concept is framed by rave culture, a subculture described by Simon Reynolds as being based around sensations and fascination rather than truth and meaning. As with most subcultures, rave culture is a fluid construct in that it is part of a societal structure of humans. The footage showcases performers displaying three movements that transcend into each other. While the movements were chosen by the performers themselves, they built upon prior approaches in order to achieve these during three preparation workshops. The movements manifest the subjective narration of each performer. The individual body stands in relation to the plural body and therefore creates the fluid information of the space in time.

Techne refers to the Greek term formulating practical knowledge. Raving, which among other things describes the act of dancing to techno music, might in fact be one way of practicing Techne. It is a self-reflective understanding of emotions, mediated and expressed through the body. The medium knows the message.

The installation invites the viewer to step in and decide which perspective to take on. Not only will they therefore miss out on two other perspectives, but they will also be in a state of constant observation created through small performative interventions. It challenges the viewer as the subject, while simultaneously revealing how different angles of a representation open up its ontological event horizon. What is caused by the change of perspective in a performative space and how much of it can even be considered representational?

The texts are transcriptions of conversations that happened during the process of interviewing music and rave related people. The main focus here is on the individuals experience of music, the subcultural function of raves and the relationship between technology and music. While all the interviews are similar at the core, they also complement each other. Critical subjects like sexism, racism and drug abuse are themes that are essential in the discussion surrounding rave culture. Each conversation partner therefore brings their personal relationship with the culture in and offers a different angle on it.

Techne is a work made possible through a collaborative effort. It would not have been possible without the incredible communal energy of every person that participated in the project. I cannot express how thankful I am for the trust and passion each of them gave.

American relief worker. Born July 16, 1828, in Alexandria, VA; died April 7, 1893, in New York, NY; dau. of Charles William Woolsey (sugar refiner) and Jane Eliza (Newton) Woolsey; sister of relief workers, Jane Stuart Woolsey (1830–1891) and Georgeanna Muirson Woolsey (1833–1906); cousin of Sarah Chauncey Woolsey (1835–1905, writer).

State Charities Aid Association (N.Y.) 1893:

For twelve years a member of the Board of Managers, for the same period Librarian, for twenty-one years a member of the Committee on Hospitals, Miss Woolsey held these three positions at the time of her death, on the 7th day of April, 1893.

An original member of the Association, and one of its most gifted members, Miss Woolsey's power of organization and executive ability were early called upon, 1872-75, in behalf of our Training School for Nurses, where she rendered most efficient service.

The necessity of a Library for the Association having become apparent, Miss Woolsey served first as Chairman of the Library Committee, and later as Librarian of the Association. Her system for cataloguing and lending the books and pamphlets is now in use, as is also the catalogue prepared by her in 1880 and revised in 1886.

The most important of the many services rendered the As sociation by Miss Woolsey was through her pen. She is the

author of our ablest and most valued publications. ' ' A Century of Nursing, with Hints Towards the Organization of a Training School," published in 1876, and "Lunacy Legislation in Eng land," published in 1884, are justly regarded as masterly treatises. They show extensive research, historical accuracy, and a presentation of the subject at once clear and forcible, united with an elegance of diction which characterizes all Miss Woolsey's literary work.

"Hospital Laundries" was published in 1880, but not until after the "Handbook for Hospital Visitors" had appeared, in 1877. This well-known handbook has been pronounced by com

petent authorities in this country and in England the best pub lication of the kind in existence. It is in use to-day in London as in New York. A second edition of the little book was pub lished in 1883.

Miss Woolsey served at different times upon committees for the insane, for preparing plans for hospital construction, etc. There is scarcely a department of the Hospital Committee in which her practical knowledge of the subject and conscientious work have not made themselves felt.

As we recall the active brain, the able hand, devoted for so many years to the interests of the poor and friendless, and now gone from among us, we may well realize the loss sustained by the Association; may well remember also all that has been given to those . who, in the life and character of Abby Howland Woolsey, have found a nobler incentive to duty, a higher standard of faithful service.

Tombstone of Charles Boeckh and his mother. He founded a company which manufactured brooms and paint brushes. Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto, Canada. Spring afternoon, 2020. Pentax K1 II.

From 'Illustrated Toronto: Past and Present: Being an Historical and Descriptive Guide-book' by J. Timperlake

P.A. Gross, 1877 - Toronto (Ont.) - 368 pages

"Charles Boeckh's Brush Factory - A very large business in the manufacture of brushes of all kinds is carried on in Toronto, the largest establishments in the Province being situate here. Among the largest manufactories of this kind in the Dominion is the factory of Charles Boeckh. It is assuredly by far the largest in Toronto. This establishment is situated on York Street, immediately opposite the Rossin House. It was established in 1850, when the manufacture of the superior kind of brushes was altogether unknown in Canada. Without asking for a bonus, as is the fashion in these days, Mr. Boeckh, guided by the encouraging advice of a few leading merchants, transferred his business from New York to Toronto, and by his practical knowledge, close attention, and general business character, he has met with a very satisfactory measure of success. The factory is a large substantial brick building, three storeys high. The first floor contains the show room, offices, and shipping department. The second floor is devoted to the manufacture of fine varnish brushes, and the third is the paint brush and bristle preparing, and miscellaneous brushmaking department. Every class of brushes are now manufactured here; but Mr. Boeckh has earned a special reputation for the manufacture of brushes used by painters, varnishers, plasterers, and furniture makers; in fact these brushes are considered superior to any others in the American or European markets. The chisel-shaped, oval, and flat varnish brushes of finest French bristles, broken in, ready for use, for the finest car, coach and picture varnishing, are in reality brought to perfection. The paint and kalsomine brushes are made from the best stock of bristles, imported direct from Russia, and are manufactured by the most skilful workmen. No better criterion of the character of Mr. Boeckh's goods can be than that they were considered surpassed by none during the late Centennial Exhibition, and the jurors recommended that his exhibit be sent to the Australian Exhibition, and the Dominion Government, acting on this recommendation, have accordingly sent all the sample exhibits of Mr. Boeckh to Australia."

2283 [16] Cadet Oak and colleagues at the academy. At the Academy Center, in San Francisco, Earth, there were more theoretic classes of Starfleet rules and regulations, diplomacy, interplanetary rights, ship strategics and maintenance, and all related matters. Together, practical classes on highly precise simulation devices would help the cadets to increase their practical knowledge and reactions on regular or unpredicted situations. This was an intense period to cadet Oak. There were many friendships being forged ate the time. Friends that would go for a lifetime. And some of the inverse too. Jealousy, ambition, ego duels of intense personalities, all them wanting to win the space, maybe becoming legends by their own hands, great commanders, scientists or technicians. Not an easy task, indeed, but all them were bold and young. Future would tell whom of them would succeed.

My last day on watch as a cadet. This is a depiction of the three main things I spend my watch doing.

Watch has become painful the past two weeks. I was denied a chance to change watch, something I have been fighting for for 6 weeks, and lately I'm just fed up. Fed up of the stupid mundane tasks, fed up of not learning anything new, fed up of my 3rd, and fed up of the other cadet on the watch that I want to be on, who never takes the opportunities offered or tries to do overtime or tasks on watch. Things that I want to do, that I fought hard to be able to do and am now unable to do. Not that I'm bitter or anything... :p Anyhow, I've been 'taking the piss' somewhat of late, and spend my watches sitting in the office and ECR filling out my portfolio and looking things up on the internet. And, yes, occaisionally checking my emails as I do so...

Well, it all worked out ok in the end. I have no practical knowledge, I have spent about 3 weeks of my 8 months training with anyone remotely good or interested in teaching me, but somehow I've almost got my book done, I have 2 folders full of work, and a modicum of appropriate theoretical knowledge. Hopefully, this will be enough to get me through...

University of Westminster, 309 Regent Street, London W1, 1910-12.

By Francis Thomas Verity (1864-1937).

Grade ll listed.

The Royal Polytechnic Institution opened at 309 Regent Street on 6 August 1838 to provide (in the words of its prospectus of 1837) “an institution where the Public, at little expense, may acquire practical knowledge of the various arts and branches of science connected with manufacturers, mining operations and rural economy.”

Sir George Cayley the "father of aeronautical engineering", was the first chairman and the Polytechnic formally received a Royal charter in August 1839.

In September 1881, the Royal Polytechnic Institution closed making a transition to new ownership and a new era of educational development. Philanthropist Quintin Hogg (1845–1903) acquired the lease to the building in December 1881. Hogg had already established a Ragged School and Boys Home in the Covent Garden area of London to provide a basic education for some of London’s poorest children. In 1873, he established the Youths’ Christian Institute & Reading Rooms to provide educational, sporting and social opportunities for young working men.

The Institute moved to Long Acre in 1878 and was renamed the Young Men’s Christian Institute. Following Hogg’s purchase of 309 Regent Street, the YMCI moved into the new premises, re-opening on 25 September 1882. About 6,000 members and students – three times the anticipated number – attended during the first 1882/3 session. The institute gradually adopted the name the Polytechnic Young Men’s Christian Institute, or simply, the Polytechnic, for short.
