After checking in and resting for a bit, we headed out for dinner before meating up with Chad and Matt for drinks at Lava Lounge.
We found a place in Pike Place to eat on Yelp, but once we got there we got lost and couldn't figure out where it was--a surprisingly common occurrence for us in Pike Place. We walked by the Steelhead Diner and it seemed lively; after a quick check on Yelp we decided to eat there.
Once we saw the menu, I was glad we did... they had poutine! I gained a taste for it in college when our cook made it, and hadn't had it in years until I went to Waterloo back in October. I never actually had the real version with cheese curds, though--I always had a version with some sort of melted cheese on it.
These were real, and delicious. Too bad the Nexus One isn't great at taking pictures in low light. :)
For fast food and the fact that this is British Columbia, this was pretty good. Part of the reason I ate this was because I had no idea what to expect in regards to Air Canada's catering.

apparently never-ever came a lot earlier than we anticipated or else enough alcohol can get anyone to try poutine
I adore poutine at restaurants, but I'd never made it myself. It's pretty easy: prepare some frozen French fries, heat some chicken gravy from a bottle and pour it over the top, and then lay some shredded cheddar over the top and wait a few minutes until it melts a bit. Yum-my.
A note to the purists: I know this isn't actually poutine, at least in the classic sense. This is how we do it in Maine, though.
So since we were heading to Montreal I had said I definitely wanted a poutine from Quebec! However, before we could even get to the the province we found the most amazing poutine in North Bay! Best!
Genius. The fries were cut into blocks and stacked with Pont-Neuf and covered in a red wine based "sauce brune".
I can never have a normal poutine again. ;)
Aside:
you know the place is busy when... the busboy, in the depths of the (behind the bar) kitchen just remarked "i think the cd is skipping".. and everyone realises we've been listening to Ella sing the same 2 bars for the last half hour. :)

Oven roasted fries out of fingerling potatoes with an oyster mushroom sauce and some cheese curds tossed in at the end. Made it all with the usual this and that, wish I could eat it with an icy Unibroue, though unfortunately it's a little close to work and the handful of pills I took this morning to be a reality.
