Here is another shot from my recent outing with the aurora, just outside of Regina, Saskatchewan.
I wasn't out for very long this time. I was getting cold and it appeared that the auroral activity was dying off. I was struggling to find a composition that I really liked and it was somewhat difficult to maneuver around the waist-deep snow.
I really like to use this fencing as a foreground element since there isn't really much else going on around this area in the winter. I really wanted to get the fencing in the frame and trailing off down through the image but the position of the aurora wouldn't allow that to happen.
There is a bit of glow coming from the light of the city, which I am not crazy about but it was unavoidable for this shot. I really like the shadow cast by the fence and post. The moon was exceptionally bright, since it was just slightly less than a full moon with no clouds around at all. In fact, it was so bright, I completely overexposed the first shot I took. I was happy that I could stop right down to f/11 to keep that crispness in the stars; I usually open all the way up to f/2.8 for these shots. I decided to stop down and crank the ISO up, which was a bit strange from what I'm usually used to.
The avocets and the redshanks are protecting their own chicks and chasing all birds away that get to close

I dont usually post anything on my blog, but I wanted to share this. Everything was fine a few months back. Then I started noticing that when I washed my hair, more and more of it would come out. I finally went to a dermatologist who diagnosed me with alopecia areata. I have dealt with hair loss before, but this time it was much more dramatic and much more noticable. I have gone through a huge range of emotions, anger, disgust, sadness,empowerment, acceptance, and back again. Tomorrow, I am going in to have the rest of what is left, shaved off. I went in two weeks ago to have just the sides done, but now the front is falling out. I dont know if I will let it grow back a third time. Each time is more devastating then the last. I havent been blogging that much lately, and this is one of the reasons why. This post is very special to me, because last week was my 6 year blog anniversary, and because of all of this, I missed it. But tomorrow starts a new chapter in my life.

It seems that after a loon has a preening session, they will usually flap their wings. Don't know what purpose it serves, but it makes for a nice photo op!
