"helicopter pickup"??? This diagram fell somewhat short of being reassuring and my fear of really deep water kicked in.
Posting again after a while. I've been working on the last few hours on a serie of three shots, and this is the first one I propose you. As ever, any comment is welcome.
I really have been taking pictures this summer, I just have been very bad about putting anything up here.

I’m posting this because some of you may remember our older photos of living in Altadena. This was the apartment/condo complex we used to live in. We moved away when my son started kindergarten. He’s in high school now, for reference. I had planned to take more photos of our old neighborhood but there were film crews and clean-up going on and I didn’t want to be in the way. I was nervous, alone and struggling with many emotions and my few photos don’t convey what I think they should so I’m adding 100 words or so. The fire station that was across the street also burned down which IMHO is doubly devastating for this community considering its location. A few blocks from here there was an active residential fire that crews were still working on. I wasn’t sure what to expect and was prepared to be turned back but access through Altadena was pretty open. Lake Ave. was reduced to a single lane in some places. It was a typical sunny Southern California day. It was almost pretty. There were many tidy piles of trash along my route. It was strange to say the least to see business as usual on Lake Avenue. A grocery store that still stands was very busy, a party supply store had bright balloon arrangements outside the front door. This was actually a relief after watching the ravaging fire on television. Kathleen’s the restaurant displayed a neon “Open” sign. Small groups of seemingly displaced people were standing around in small groups or lines. I have heard that the Altadena Country Club is gone, though I did not see it myself. No matter what you might feel about country clubs this is one of the most beautiful places I had ever been to in my life. I hadn’t been to my old neighborhood in a long time and I also noticed that there were several new businesses. If you are reading this then you probably already know about the staggering number of structures that burned down and people who have lost everything they had. Outstanding community workers, and business owners, leaders and people who worked hard to build this community have lost their homes or businesses or both. According to the New York Times, 17 people in this city lost their lives.
