POSTING JUVENILE BIRDS FROM HOME

JUVENILE recalls the adult but note the red crown and subdued red vent colour. this one has been around for quite a while, so its not a very young one. But a real joy climbing tree trunks in the garden, excavates timber by drilling with its bill, does not like its photo being taken, on seeing me it will go to the far side of the tree. Has a undulating flight, loves the peanut feeders, but flys straight to them, and away the same, so a oppertunity like above, captured yesterday (Tues.) has to be taken.

I have a grandcat and a granddog and even a cat nephew. But I have no cute face shots of my grands that were taken by me, and I'm pretty sure my sister will be posting a photo of my feline nephew. So here is Rufus, my Connecticut neighbor's cat. We called him "the philosopher cat" because he would sit on his porch for hours staring in one direction, seemingly contemplating life on Alewife Cove. He's been gone for several years now, but I still think about him often. And he looks a lot like my grandcat! ^-^

The Macro Mondays theme for 5/8 is broken and I’m so glad I keep resisting the urge to cast this aside- to refuse to throw this away!! It’s a bottle that I have photographed a gazillion times. Will post a size verification a bit later.

In this scene from a nearby village there is a lot of activity near the post box but no letters being posted. The couple on the left in their country attire ..the shoppers on the right and the seated man checking his phone !!
Zebra foals looking at us out in the Masai Mara savannah near to the Tanzania border.
Have been going through some of my travel photos and realise there is still so many photos to post.
I think I would have to start posting my travel photos on Tuesday starting now.
Some zebra information:
Zebras are born with their stripes, which appear brown and white at birth!
But are zebras black with white stripes or white with black stripes.....
It was previously believed that zebras were white animals with black stripes, since some zebras have white underbellies.
Evidence, however, shows that the animal's background colour is black and the white stripes and bellies are additions!

I'm re-posting this one because I made subtle changes in the editing and I think I like it better now.
It seems to be a popular shot alot of people had requested to buy a copie.
So I'm looking into framing it on Canvas and adding it to my collection for my craft shows at the end of the year!.
Unfortunately I can't edit out the print of the wood-board. Hens why it's in black and white the shot. The long stripe and print are in bright red and black. Which ruins the shot! Too much distraction I think...
Anyway I hope you you don't mind seeing the shot a second time... Hope you like it! :)

A FAMILIAR SPECIES, in part because of its affinity for human habitation. Waiting to be fed, by its parents. The species predilection for nesting in roof spaces , holes in walls and dence hedges. they do take to nest boxes, but best to provide a group of them, as they prefere to nest in company of other sparrows.

My final posting of the beach at Elgol for this year. This is a tremendous place to visit for photographers but you need to time the visit better than I did. I tried to squeeze too much into my trip and shot Niest Point, Elgol and Eilean Donan in a single day. With Neist point at dawn and Dornie at dusk I was left shooting Elgol at the height of the day. Each of these location are worth a day of shooting.
The Elgol location is on a south west facing bay making it ideal for catching the early rays of a winter sunrise or for the mountains to catch the light of the winter sunset. I wasn't unhappy with what I got during my time there but knowing there is more to be had leaves me desperate to return.
RHS Hyde Hall, Rettendon, Nr. Chelmsford, Essex
Over the past 5 or 6 years I have posted many images from RHS Hyde Hall and now I’m going to post another series, this time called ‘A day in the Life’. As the title suggests I’m posting what I think are the best of that particular day. These are just some taken on 05/07/2014 and I am slowly getting up to date. This is the second and last of two postings.
I've struggled with the idea of posting this one
A beautiful bird but an unwelcome visitor to our garden
This was the aftermath we witnessed taking place a few days ago.
Sadly one of our little sparrows lost it's life before we witnessed this scene.
I understand we eat meat, so in theory I'm no different from this Sparrowhawk hunting it's prey
It's just so difficult to watch when for months on end the little sparrows who nested in our bushes, brought up what seemed like a multitude of offspring, fledged and continue to return to our feeders
We have grown so attached to their playful, funny characters
I'd certainly never make a wildlife photographer. Im in tears watching Frozen Planet 2
I'd want to try and save them all
Well, I also thought although not in flight I can capture images of birds (not the blurry variety)
Not crystal clear, taken through the kitchen window, which may have needed cleaning
It tells a story, if nothing else
We just hope he doesn't chose to do a return visit

I took this shot on my walk back down to the car after watching the sunrise up on Yew Crag. The views down the Southern end of Ullswater are just wonderful all the way down this path. The sun was up and catching the fence posts, with the diagonal of the path leading my eye back down towards Glenridding and Patterdale.
Couldn't resist stopping and taking yet another shot of this Lakeland Winter scene.
Posting this Reddish Egret launching across Saint Charles Bay reminds me that I left another one in the midst of an attack on Bolivar. Next up, the rest of that story.

Once upon a time, as a stay-at-home mum to our two small children, evening classes in adult education were precious 'me-time': swimming, badminton, Spanish, flower arranging, copper/pewter work.
Family received pieces in pewter or copper as gifts; this pewter dragon, crafted for me and mounted on purple-dyed hessian, hangs still on our wall at home.

After recently posting a photo of a sharp-shinned hawk, I remembered this photo that I took of a hawk in the woods near my home several years ago. This is a cooper's Hawk. It is quite a bit larger than the sharp-shinned hawk. I spotted this hawk in a tree near my bird feeders, probably watching for an easy meal.
Whimsically posting one of my many, many loon pics ... even though they are now wintering somewhere in Georgia, U.S.A. (at least that's what Google says). I am already pining for them to return. Winter is wonderful at Keefer Lake but it is much too long.

Im just getting around to going through my Butterfly & Dragonfly images from the summer so forgive me for posting older images.
Posting this for my brothers 50th birthday. He took this with my camera on North Uist. He was in the passengers seat which meant he was a little closer to the bird so I passed him the camera to have a go.
We must have seen 3 or 4 of these every day, at anytime during the day, and on other days more. You can see that this one has eaten very recently by the blood stains around the beak.

Looking Close on Friday: objects in pastel colours
I've always loved the pastel scenes my Flickr friends post. I found this really difficult so if anybody wishes to share a little expertise with me, that would be very welcome!

Everyone has been posting (and making Explore with them, I might add) hay bales. This is the SW GA version - peanut hay. It is rolled right after the peanuts are picked and makes very nutritious hay, which cows love. The litter on the ground is the remnant of the vines. Also we have a lot of clay in our soil around here making it reddish orange. I was on my way to town when I saw this and stopped on the spot because I have waited and thought to go back another time, and they had already moved the bales. I got dirt in my sandals trying to get this, but anything for a Flickr shot :-).
