Taken tonight before the sun set as a storm system passed by. The wind picked up and folded in half my umbrella that I was holding over my camera to protect it from falling rain. I quickly pulled my finger off the shutter button, took my camera of its tripod and ran to my car. It was a real adrenaline rush to shoot in a storm with gusting wind and rain to capture photos of lightning strikes.
Recently a pair of hoopoes set up nest in my area and I love seeing them digging for bugs in the grass. But yesterday there was a terrible noise- a female kestrel swooped down and caught Mr. Hoopoe. There was little that I could do except watch as she deftly ripped out his wing feathers before killing him, and flying off to her own hungry chicks.
I just HAD to collect the feathers. There's a real one in the midst of these watercolour ones!
I’m bored, like, really bored. So bored to the point that I decided to post a second photo today just to get my brain working and tell a story.
It’s been a bit since I posted a photo from my Pennsylvania trip that I dubbed PA2023, and since I’ve had quite a few new followers since my last post from the trip (which if you are new, welcome), I figured I’d drop a post from the enjoyable yet nightmarish trip.
This one I have been highly debating on posting, on one hand, the nose lighting is perfect, on the other, I hate (and I mean HATE) when things aren’t sidelit. A lot of people are telling me to post it anyway, so here goes.
This, I believe, is from the second day of the trip. My father and I had ventured over to horseshoe curve for the day, and decided to run over to Cresson for dinner and some additional trains.
We grabbed dinner at a place called The Brick on Front, which on a totally unrelated note, if you’re looking the place up on google, their fries taste just as good as they look online. Hell, they’re the best I’ve ever eaten in my 21 years of being on this planet (I was 19 at the time of this trip). Unfortunately, I can’t say too much the same for the burger, it was still okay though. Not bad for the small town that Cresson is.
Of course, the first train after dinner was the worst smelling train on the line. It is a loaded trash train (the symbol is 63V) and when it’s hot and very humid, it smells BAD. I was hoping I wasn’t about to lose my dinner, and I didn’t. But I sure as hell wasn’t going to be getting anything from The Ice Box in Bedford (where we were staying/camping).
Yet, 63V is a staple of Pittsburgh Line railfanning. This train, to my knowledge, is the only operating unit trash train in the US that is considered a road freight. It was definitely on my list of things to see on the trip, and I particularly wanted to get it at Cresson just to get it under the signal bridge. It’s a very wide image, but it’s still a cool sight of seeing a mile plus long trash train stretch down the line.
Onwards.
...but they made a nice subject!
my daughter graduated from high school in 2000...and these were flowers she received. she still has them...in her graduation vase...right in front of the pic i took of her and her high school friends.
today...i practiced using my new lens on them.
Poor Jack! I didn´t realise he had slipped. Still, there was time to take this shot before helping him... ;)
This robber fly with prey was firmly gripping the leaf of this native grass in our Brisbane garden. Normally they fly off as soon as I approach them closely, but this one was too intent on injecting its neurotoxin into this small blue butterfly and then sucking out its innards to take any notice of me.
I'm not sure of the exact ID of this assassin!

I assume it's seaweed they are looking for but then I'm no farmer.

Poor Hazel, she's been my go to faceup practice doll for soooo long. I finally managed to give her one I can live with and she's back in one piece.
Dave was in the living room, watching TV. I heard that someone was coming in to visit, but I was dressed like a boy, so I didn’t see any reason to panic.
Dave came into our bedroom and said, “Milo’s here. He’s here to see Pamela.”
“What!” I said. “Are you crazy? Tell him to go away!”
“I already told him Pamela’s in the bedroom. Time to put on one of your pretty little dresses, Pamela.”
“I’m not putting on any damn dress!”
“Suit yourself. But I’m taking him in here and telling him you’re Pamela. I might even show him some of your dresses hanging in the closet, if he doesn’t believe me. Why don’t you wear that pretty pink dress you wore to the mall? He thought you looked really sexy in that dress.”
“You can’t do this to me!”
“Oh yes I can. I can do anything I want to you. I’m not the one who wears panties and lipstick.”
“You know Mom makes me do that.”
“Fine. I’ll just bring Milo in here and you can explain that to him.”
“No! No! Fine! I’ll—I’ll put on a dress.” I looked down at myself. I hated that I had to do this. Summer vacation was starting in a few weeks, and Mom might even make me dress like a girl for the whole summer. A whole humiliating summer in dresses! And here I was, about to put on one of ‘my’ dresses, without her even telling me to do it. “Tell him to wait. I’ll need at least half an hour to put on my make-up.”
“Whatever you say, Pamela.”
The poor birds...I feel so sorry for them in the cold weather! In the Winter I put little containers on top of the fence with water in them....the big bird water/bath just doesn't work and freezes, and then it's too big to break the ice out! This little Flicker was out here banging away trying to break the ice with no luck. So I came out got it put water in the containers, and boy they're right back to drink. :)
While trying to look after a few plants in the back yard I spotted some blue objects under a cedar. The nest was in two parts and the eggs scattered about.
As much a gesture of futility as anything else I put the eggs back in the nest, but I'm pretty certain the outcome was already guaranteed.
My assumption is the nest was blown out of the tree on the week-end, or ended up being attacked by grackles or our big grey squirrel. Though I assume the latter wouldn't have left the eggs.
i have no idea why i took this. i hate rodents.
and sooc

Here you can see her right foot is crippled. She seems to be doing OK though and as mentioned prior we're trying to make sourcing food easy for her.
...man´s carbonara.
Home alone lunch.
Did a fridge raid and made a "Poor man´s carbonara."
Old spaghetti, fried, with chopped Chorizo sausages, chives, egg, black pepper, herbs and mozarella.
Simple and good.
Some very poor negatives that came with some better quality slides I acquired. Adding them in case any of them are of interest, no details or locations were given so any suggestions gratefully received.
This one is Britannia 70011 Hotspur again, possibly at the same location as the earlier negative I uploaded with the narrow gauge line for small trucks to load from the 16T wagons and then feed the coaling unit.
Class 08 no 08529 is looking rather worse for wear outside Doncaster works in May 2008. Possibly it was there for component recovery as the mortal remains of this loco were disposed of at CF Booth of Rotherham in August 2008.
08529 was built at Darlington works in 1959 and was originally numbered D3691. It had been withdrawn from service at Immingham (IM) in December 1999.
Poor Ned, you're better off dead.
You'll get no peace of mind,
Traps are trailing,
Ned they're hot on your trail.
Boy, they're gonna hang you high.
~ from the tradional Australian folk song "Poor Ned".
Ned Kelly was a bushranger who was hanged on the 11/11/1880. His crimes included horse theft, bank robbery and police killing.
Many believe him to be a folk hero, retaliating against injustices of the time. Others believe he was an unsavoury character who got what he justly deserved.

The theme this week for the Me Again Monday group is "Gentle". I'm not sure I could produce a more gentle image of me for this challenge so I am using yesterday's sp.
