On January 13th 1945, Raymond King, based at Wattisham was on an escort mission when he experienced engine failure and ditched his aircraft just 800 yards from the seafront at Clacton.
Although rescued by the crew of the Clacton lifeboat he never survived his ordeal in the bitterly cold sea and tragically died from hypothermia.
He was buried at The American Cemetery at Madingley, and after the war was returned to the United States.
The aircraft was recovered from the sea in 1987.

Hurricane MkI P3175 of 257 Squadron flown by Pilot Officer Gerard Maffet took off from Martlesham Heath on 31st August 1940 to intercept a formation of Messerschmitt 110's and Junkers 88's. Maffett was hit and forced to bail out at low level, sadly his parachute didn't open in time. The aircraft crashed in mudflats near Walton on the Naze Essex.
The main wreakage is held by The RAF Museum.

Pool was lovely, though often crowded. The participatory fountains, water jets, and slide made it terrific for the kids.
