“We do this to remember history, both past and present, and to honor our military.”

Every afternoon at four o'clock, a processional that begins in the lobby of the Grand Hotel, ends with the firing of a bronze six-pounder cannon over the water of Mobile Bay.

The M1841 6-pounder field gun was a bronze smoothbore muzzleloading cannon that was adopted by the United States Army in 1841 and used from the Mexican–American War to the American Civil War. It fired a 6.1 lb round shot up to a distance of 1,523 yards at 5° elevation.

Notice the fire erupting upwards from the cannon's vent hole, where ta friction primer was inserted to ignite the cannon gunpowder charge. Also see the lanyard whipping towards the left of the cannon - the cannoneer had just pulled the lanyard to trigger the friction primer.

It was a very murky up there today but I am pleased that I took some reasonable pictures. Brightlingsea in the foreground. Point Clear the other side of Brightlingsea Creek and beyond is Sandy Point and Colne Point Nature Reserve in Essex.

The houses etc are in Point Clear. Sandy Point is at the end of Colne Point Nature Reserve that covers around 652 acres of mainly saltmarsh.

After climbing up the shingle bank from Point Clear Ferry terminal we walked along the sea wall to The Orchards Holiday Village bus stop in order to catch the above service 6 journey which, as we can see, was being worked by Hedingham’s East Lancs Scania N94UD Omnidekka type 817. A good crowd were waiting and due to severe traffic congestion, caused by roadwork related temporary traffic lights near Jaywick Lane, by the time 817 arrived passengers were turning up for the next journey. Hence the busy driver has not yet had time to change the electronic destination display.

Operation of service 6 passed to Hedingham as from 29th July 2018 following the closure of First’s Clacton depot.

Spent the weekend in Fairhope, AL for one of my wife's friend's wedding. Before heading back, I took some time to drive around and see what I could capture. I passed by this old fire truck sitting in a hayfield and had to turn around, park on the side of the road, and walk over for a few photos.

The point is part of Colne Point Nature Reserve.

And Brightlingsea at the top of the picture.

in Essex. The plane is directly overhead Brightlingsea. In the middle of Brightlingsea Creek is Cindery Island, then Point Clear.

Sandy Point has been cut off from the rest of Colne Pooint Nature Reserve as there is a high tide.

I came across this old abandoned school while taking a detour one evening to get to the Family Wash restaurant for the wedding rehearsal dinner. I didn't have time to stop that evening, but made a drive back two days later before I left town.
