diaphanous seed pods

circle of life - fine art in it's simplicity - honesty
In the fall milkweed seed pods open and disperse their seeds and in so doing reveal beautiful silk like strands with seeds attached that eventually end up on the ground and hopefully germinate in the coming Spring
The Australian Banksia accumulates seeds in its canopy, releasing them only when conditions are suitable for establishing new plants. The delayed release of this mature seed bank is known as serotiny, and can require the preservation of seeds inside their pods for several years, somehow secured against damage from high levels of UV radiation, predation, changing weather conditions and microbial attack. Release is then triggered, often by the normally destructive agency of bushfires.
The Australian children's author, May Gibbs, featured villains called Big, Bad Banksia Men whose scary looks were modelled on these strange growths.
The rogues gallery of Cantina aliens were always my favourite characters. I'd like to think that if I was a second generation Star Wars fan, I'd feel the same way about the Pod Racer pilots in Ep1

Orange Pod is a macro photograph of a Pod.
In autumn the trees in my neighborhood are covered with pods. The pods start out green and turn pink and then reddish brown. One day the wind knocked down several branches of pods, and the streets were carpeted with them. I brought them home and took many photos. For a while my living room looked like the world outside.
I love the structure of the pods, and the many creative possibilities they offer.

Todays shopping look - I had so many attentive looks - black shirt, black leather skirt and black 4 inch highheels.
Do you think this is overdressed?

Las grandes empresas ensalzan su poder y belleza por encima de todos. Son las iglesias y catedrales del siglo XXI
This was from a recent outing which was quite uncommon in that it was cloudy with no wind for an entire day. Macro subjects did not bob around and there were no harsh shadows to deal with. I have been drawn to the milkweed plants for sometime. I enjoy following their transformation over the growing season.

Himalayan Balsam Pods.
These grow as invasive weeds in the nearby brook carried by the water and proliferating along the muddy banks. Because the seed pods explode quite violently and have a spring mechanism inside the seeds can be found up to 5 metres from the point where the pod bursts. Kids love them and act as another dispersal method.

I found these little insects on some of the Milkweed pods. There are hundreds of them on each pod. They are as small as a pinhead.
This is Corliss' personal favorite and prying it out of her hands may take a while. Its odd how/why one becomes attached to a piece, as we're always making more. Our usual mantra is "off the bench and out the door". But not this one. John sees this as a bad habit not to be encouraged - something like making pets of farm animals.
