One more shot of our unexpected migration guest this spring who kept us smiling for the duration of its visit....... The first day of its stay, every time another bird would enter its "space," the sparrow's boldly striped crest would pop up and along and with the "evil eye stare," cause the approacher to quickly retreat! I think the regular backyard birds were as surprised by its presence as we were. They eventually reached a truce and somewhat tolerated sharing the backyard for the rest of its short stay.

Schunck est un ancien magasin de mode et grand magasin à Heerlen et Geleen . C'est aussi le nom d'une série de bâtiments qui abritèrent la firme Schunck, dont le plus connu est le Palais de Verre , désigné parmi les mille bâtiments les plus influents du XXe siècle par l' Union des architectes internationaux . Le client du Glass Palace était le propriétaire Peter Schunck .
C'est aujourd'hui un centre culturel avec un musée d'art moderne et contemporain, un institut d'architecture, une école de musique et de danse et une bibliothèque sous l'ancien nom. Le musée abrite la collection d'art de Heerlen.
Dans les années 1930, un édifice particulier a été construit au centre de Heerlen : le Palais de Verre. Le bâtiment était extrêmement moderne et innovant pour l’époque. Le Glass Palace a été construit à l’origine comme une maison de couture. L'architecte Frits Peutz a conçu le bâtiment moderniste pour le compte de l'entrepreneur Peter Schunck. En raison de sa hauteur et de ses grandes surfaces vitrées, le bâtiment fut bientôt communément appelé « le Palais de Verre ».
Le Palais de Verre possède non seulement une architecture impressionnante, mais aussi une histoire riche, parallèle au développement de la ville de Heerlen. De la richesse et du succès au déclin. Du point le plus bas d'une démolition imminente au sauvetage et à la restauration d'une icône spéciale. Du grand magasin à l’immeuble de bureaux. Du supermarché et des magasins aux studios et immeubles anti-squats et finalement à l'institution culturelle SCHUNCK, figure de proue du printemps culturel de la ville.
Schunck is a former fashion store and department store in Heerlen and Geleen. It is also the name of a series of buildings which housed the Schunck firm, the best known of which is the Glass Palace, named among the thousand most influential buildings of the 20th century by the Union of International Architects. The Glass Palace's client was owner Peter Schunck.
Today it is a cultural center with a museum of modern and contemporary art, an architectural institute, a music and dance school and a library under the old name. The museum houses Heerlen's art collection.
In the 1930s, a special building was built in the center of Heerlen: the Glass Palace. The building was extremely modern and innovative for its time. The Glass Palace was originally built as a fashion house. Architect Frits Puisz designed the modernist building on behalf of entrepreneur Peter Schunck. Due to its height and large glass surfaces, the building was soon commonly called "the Glass Palace".
The Glass Palace not only has impressive architecture, but also a rich history, parallel to the development of the city of Heerlen. From wealth and success to decline. From the lowest point of imminent demolition to the rescue and restoration of a special icon. From department store to office building. From the supermarket and shops to the studios and anti-squat buildings and finally to the cultural institution SCHUNCK, the figurehead of the city's cultural spring.
Lens is the chunky Minolta MC Rokkor QE 100mm f3.5 Macro. In fairness I should be comparing this lens to my Pentax-M 100mm f4 macro, rather than the Rikenon. Both the Rokkor and the Pentax will focus down to half life-size.
The Pentax 'M' design philosophy was to produce lenses that were elegant, light, and compact. Almost all had a 49mm filter thread. The focus ring on the Pentax is buttery smooth and superbly dampened.
In contrast the Rokkor is like a brick (592g vs just 378g) and utilitarian in design. Yes, the lens is a smidgin faster (f3.5 vs f4), though not enough to justify the weight difference. Filter thread is 55mm. The focus ring moves in a way that suggests the lens has seen plenty of use.
While the two lenses handle quite differently, I do like the solid feel of the early Rokkor lenses.
The results so far look very nice.
As a comparison, I had photographed this same clump of daises just over a year ago - with the Rikenon.

L'une des pièces les plus prisées du Kunstmuseum est le magnifique bâtiment Art déco lui-même. Conçu par l'architecte H.P. Berlage, il impressionne non seulement par sa maçonnerie jaune caractéristique, mais aussi par son intérieur spacieux, sa lumière naturelle et ses couleurs modernes. Berlage lui-même pensait que ce serait sa plus grande œuvre. Mais ce fut aussi sa dernière, et il ne vit jamais son chef-d'œuvre achevé, décédant un an avant la fin des travaux. Quatre-vingts ans plus tard, on peut dire que Berlage a tenu sa promesse. Le bâtiment est toujours très apprécié des visiteurs, des artistes et des architectes, et compte parmi les plus beaux et les plus modernes bâtiments muséaux d'Europe.
One of the Kunstmuseum's most prized pieces is the magnificent Art Deco building itself. Designed by architect H.P. Berlage, it impresses not only with its distinctive yellow brickwork, but also with its spacious interior, natural light, and modern colors. Berlage himself believed it would be his greatest work. But it was also his last, and he never saw his masterpiece completed, dying a year before it was completed. Eighty years later, it's safe to say that Berlage has kept his promise. The building is still highly regarded by visitors, artists, and architects, and is one of the most beautiful and modern museum buildings in Europe.

I had a couple of free nights to roam D-town and ended-up with this classic perspective looking east.

Elle s'en différencie pourtant aisément par son gabarit plus massif, son bec blanc qui se prolonge par une plaque blanche sur son front, son plumage assez uniformément gris-noir et ses pattes plus courtes, verdâtres, , elle passe le plus clair de son temps à flotter à découvert sur les plans d'eau, ce qui rend cet oiseau abondant bien visible partout où il est présent. Elle plonge très fréquemment pour chercher sa nourriture, majoritairement végétale, jusqu'à plusieurs mètres de profondeur
Au contraire, la poule d'eau, plus farouche, se cache souvent dans la végétation dense des berges ou flottante, trouve sa nourriture plus près de la surface ou parmi les végétaux émergents et va fréquemment picorer sur la terre ferme

A partial migrant with a seemingly laborious flight, it nests in reedbeds or among marsh plants and is often confused by the public with the moorhen. On this occasion I am late for a meeting and racing to catch it at the same time grabbing shots as I can. Interesting use of time....but it seems that whenever I visit Praha, I am racing to catch something.....enjoy.
