Going to Mt. St. Helens, in south Central Washington, was one of the treats of the trip. It was somewhat other worldly - mostly because for most of our visit - we were the only people there.
The road into St. Helens is an in-and-out road. There's no passing by on your way to somewhere else. The Johnston Ridge Observatory sits five miles to the north of the mountain - and is as close as you can get by car (although there are trails - so feel free to walk up and stand on the mountain itself if you are willing - but don't anger the gods). The Observatory doesn't open until June, and when we pulled into the parking lot - which looked like it could hold hundreds of cars - there wasn't a single other car there. So the place was all ours.
If you were alive when St. Helens erupted in 1980, you will recall the big deal it was. If not - well - Google has a lot of information on it. About 1/6th of the mountain - on it's north side - is simply gone. It slid down into the valley below - covering that valley in mud to an average depth of 150'. 42 years has done what it can to change the valley - but it's still a pretty other world feeling. The lava dome in the center of crater ranges from 800-1,300 feet tall and someday it will go again - very circle of life like.
