Turns out I didn't need to put the layer of waxed paper under the cake after all. In fact, the paper layer just made for a slightly messier look since I didn't want to fuss with removing the waxed paper yet the tape I'd use to tack it down had acquired smudges of frosting and cake underneath, making it nigh impossible to wipe clean.
