A plain chachalaca approaches a pond at Quinta Mazatlan for a drink. The chachalaca is a type of galliforme, heavy-bodied ground-feeding birds that includes turkeys, chickens, quail, and other land fowl. Gallinaceous birds, as they are called, are important in their ecosystems as seed dispersers and predators and are often raised by humans for their meat and eggs or hunted as game birds. They are social, can be very noisy and often remain unperturbed near humans, as their relatively small size makes them less desirable to hunters than their larger relatives. As agricultural pests, they have a ravenous appetite for tomatoes, melons, beans, and radishes and can ravage a small garden in short order. They travel in packs of six to twelve. Liuwa Plain in Zambia has one of the largest hyena populations in Africa. They thrive in the large open grassland with plenty of migrating animals to feed on. A pair of young hyenas walk past another relaxing at the edge of one of the few remaining watering holes in their territory.
I also spent a brief sojourn into my father's past. He was born in 1919 in the tiny town of Belle Plain on the highway between Regina and Moose Jaw. Amazinlgy, his birth house still exits and can be found in these photos. Very little is known about the history of this place as my father passed away in 1986.

Taronga Western Plains Zoo, Dubbo
This is one of the world's most unique birds, a venerable member of Australia's avifauna dating back to Gondwana and it is under imminent threat of extinction with less than 1000 birds remaining in the wild.
The Plains-wanderer is on 'the EDGE' (Evolutionary Distinct and Globally Endangered) which is a program that highlights and protects some of the most fragile species on the planet.
Taronga believes in a future for this iconic species and is committed to breeding these birds - under the Save Our Species program - right here at Taronga Western Plains
Zoo. With a shift from the impossible to the possible we are aiming to establish a sustainable insurance population that can support the reintroduction of this ancient wanderer to its home range.
