Helianthus petiolaris

This sunflower is quite common around here and currently blooming like crazy. Notice the yellow highlights on the sandhills in the back of the shot. Got this photo right before a storm rolled in, would be nice to re-shoot with a clear, blue sky.

I hadn't seen this early-blooming sunflower species in the park previously. It was growing where the city brought in some fill dirt to make a lawn in front of a new picnic shelter. From the front this looks much like the common sunflower -- I did the ID by looking at the bracts on the back of the flower. I was hoping to go back and get a photo of this species in better light, but, alas, the city mowed down the plant shortly after this was taken..... Myself, I prefer the sunflower to the lawn....

A plain chachalaca approaches a pond at Quinta Mazatlan for a drink. The chachalaca is a type of galliforme, heavy-bodied ground-feeding birds that includes turkeys, chickens, quail, and other land fowl. Gallinaceous birds, as they are called, are important in their ecosystems as seed dispersers and predators and are often raised by humans for their meat and eggs or hunted as game birds. They are social, can be very noisy and often remain unperturbed near humans, as their relatively small size makes them less desirable to hunters than their larger relatives. As agricultural pests, they have a ravenous appetite for tomatoes, melons, beans, and radishes and can ravage a small garden in short order. They travel in packs of six to twelve. Liuwa Plain in Zambia has one of the largest hyena populations in Africa. They thrive in the large open grassland with plenty of migrating animals to feed on. A pair of young hyenas walk past another relaxing at the edge of one of the few remaining watering holes in their territory.
