Plain-colored Seedeater - Catamenia inornata minor - Невзрачный семеноед

Plains Prickly Pear (Opuntia polyacantha). Along route CA-168, east of Big Pine, in the White Mountains in Inyo National Forest. Inyo County, California.
This species is widespread in western North America. The subspecies found in California's White Mountains (erinacea) is often called Grizzly Bear Prickly Pear. The examples I found all had yellow flowers, but in other locations the flowers can be purple. However, when the flowers were just opening up, they were peach colored -- and they turned peach again when fading away. The spines were quite long, and often quite dense.

Location: Bhimashankar, India
