Abney Hall, built in 1847, is the focal point of the park. Its grand structure and landscaped gardens tell of the wealth of the first owner, a former Mayor of Stockport and cotton magnate.
The walled garden hides an ingenious but extravagant invention which kept the orchard and vegetable garden warm and healthy throughout the year. The walls contain cavities and during the heyday of the hall, warm air was blown from a furnace in the cellar, through the cavities and out of a gothic style ventilation shaft.
The site of the park was formerly part of the Mersey flood plain. Much of the land is still very damp, forming wet meadows. Wetlands are becoming increasingly rare as land is drained for development, destroying the rare plants that rely on the damp soils. Abney Park is one of the few sites in Stockport where you will see such plants in abundance. During the summer, the wetlands are awash with the colour of early purple and common spotted orchids, yellow meadow buttercups and the pink of the cuckoo flower.

Carrizo Plain National Monument
Southern Railway brick passenger station at The Plains, VA. Built in 1914 on the Manassas Gap Branch (now the NS B Line). The SR freight agency closed n 1973. Adaptive reuse as commercial space.
"The impetus for the new passenger station was to provide a moreelegant arrival venue for those huntsmen traveling from the north to participate in the Orange County Hunt. Many of these travelers arrived in their private railroad cars. The room in the half-story portion of the brick depot was dedicated to a private waiting room for the northern visitors. It was named the Governor W. Averell Harriman Room in honor of Edward Harriman’s son who was governor of New York. Fairfax Harrison, president of the Southern Railway System who lived nearby, was particularly influential in seeing that the new railroad station was built".

Danaus chrysippus, also known as the plain tiger or African monarch, is a medium-sized, butterfly widespread in Asia and Africa. It belongs to the Danainae ("Milkweed butterflies") subfamily of the brush-footed butterfly family, Nymphalidae. Its coloration is mimicked by multiple species.
The plain tiger is believed to be one of the first butterflies to be used in art. A 3500-year-old Egyptian fresco in Luxor features the oldest illustration of this species.
The plain tiger can be considered the archetypical danaine of India. Accordingly, this species has been studied in greater detail than other members of its subfamily occurring in India.
The Salt Plains are a flat expanse of mud, completely devoid of vegetation, located in north central Oklahoma. The name, Salt Plains, is derived from the thin layer of salt that covers the flats. This salt was used by Native American tribes and early pioneers who first settled the area.
The plains are 7 miles in length and approximately 3 miles wide and lie within the boundaries of the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge. The plains border the Great Salt Plains Reservoir, constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1941.
