The plains bison is one of two subspecies/ecotypes of the American bison, the other being the wood bison (Bison bison athabascae). Furthermore, it has been suggested that the Plains Bison consists of a northern (Bison bison montanae) and a southern subspecies, bringing the total to three. However, this is generally not supported.

Plains bison have been introduced into a number of locations around North America. The furthest north introduction occurred in 1928 when the Alaska Game Commission brought bison to the area of present day Delta Junction. Bison taken from this transplant were also introduced to other Alaska locations, including Farewell and Chitina. The Delta Junction herd has fared best, with a population of multiple hundreds throughout the late 20th century. This herd is popular with hunters interested in hundreds of pounds of high quality meat, but has been a problem for farming operations in the area.

In 2006, plains bison from Elk Island National Park in Alberta were released into Grasslands National Park in Saskatchewan. This marks the first time plains bison have wandered the short-grass prairies of Canada since their near-extinction at the turn of the 20th century

la rivière Awash traverse une plaine fertile

Located about five kilometres West of Silverton, the Mundi Mundi Plains is a truly breathtaking place.

Looking out onto the expansive Mundi Mundi Plains, it's a perfect spot to take in a sunset or picnic.

The view must be seen to be believed. The wide, flat heart of the Australian outback extends seemingly forever. On a clear day the curvature of the earth can be seen.

Of course, a lot of people have seen the area yet may not realise it, spotlighted as it was in the famous crash scene of Mad Max 2. Sharp-eyed explorers can even find old sets from the movie smattered around.

Shot this afternoon in Des Plaines by the Union Pacific Northwest Line tracks. That is a closable road that leads to Northwest Highway (US Rt 14). I have seen it a couple feet higher -- like almost to the bottom of the bridge -- but then again, this is DECEMBER.
