Normally I only post 1 image a day but this day felt more like Christmas, taking delivery of a D800. I was impressed with the wide dynamic range as seen on this single jpeg image (my version of PS raw converter does not support the D800 RAW format yet). This is a morning shot at the Camas National Wildlife Refuge north of Idaho Falls cropped to a square format, the original still maintaining a pixel size of 4457 x 4457 pixels.

One of the first things I saw after arriving in Brussels, Belgium.
It impressed me somehow, and I like the digital touch it has.

A picture that was in the que for long time.
Here's a photo from Key Biscayne (the famous lighthouse there) that I took with the Pixel 2 phone. I also got one with my Sony a7R III, but I think I like this one better! I recently released the full review of the Sony a7R III at www.stuckincustoms.com/sony-a7riii-review/ and I sneaked in a Pixel 2 photo in there to see if anyone could tell the difference. No one has so far... It's kind of a fun test, reminding me and (hopefully others) that mobile phones are the clear and present future of almost all photography. By the way, I paid full price for my Google Pixel 2; this is not a paid post or anything! I know I really talk about that phone a lot, but it's right from the heart, yo!

No tornadoes on this day's chase, but some incredible supercell structure out on the plains of Nebraska.
We started the day with a supercell that had several meso structures being reported from radar. This storm was tracking slowly about 12 knots cresting from the northwest to southeast. Classic June storm structure for this time of year in Nebraska. Northwest of North Platte Nebraska it had reported wall cloud and we definitely wanted a piece of this action.
We arrived as it was gaining strength as it has pushed through Maxwell Nebraska. We stopped in Brady, just to the southeast via I-80 corridor to get the bugs off of the windshield and as the storm was gaining strength. We had stopped just a few miles to the south of Brady we set up shop to catch this storm. Nice clear beautiful structure accompanied the underbelly of this supercell. Though we had a clear cut defined wall cloud this storm never did show us her tornadic teeth.
After about an hour on this storm in the same position (rare for us to do this) we eventually had to back off and get back to the east. We had to get south of Gothenburg just a few miles off the I-80 exit area for the next structured shot of this supercell. Oh we got just what we were looking for! Phenomenal base rotation!
Eventually we had backed off again as the hail core was approaching. Plus this cell was loosing its steam. We moved back to the I-80 corridor then south of Cozad Nebraska and this cell was in redevelopment mode and we had some waiting to do. Though not a long wait as this original cell fizzled out but we had one more chance for good structure south of Overten Nebraska. We headed to Loomis Nebraska for another treat to end the day. Oh did I say treat? We got a whole bunch more eye candy than expected.
Just to the east of Loomis Nebraska we encountered some incredible supercell structure. This storm wasn't going to be shy, and she eventually showed us some teeth.
Personal Note: For some odd reason I didn't clear my memory card on my last chase, and I ran out of room on my SD Card. I had to stop shooting after the wall cloud was right over my location my Loomis Nebraska. I didn't have time to pull out my spare card and load it due to the strength and this fast moving cell. This storm cell became outflow dominate and man do I mean dominate. We got caught in the outflow boundary several times with tons of gustnadoes and almost haboobish. I did have my trusty camera with me... I was in the drivers seat so when we had a chance, I did capture some incredible pics that blew me away literally.
All in all. I'm not always about catching the tornado. I had some good friends and fellow storm chasers along side that day. In my opinion... just another EPIC chase day in Nebraska!!! Woot Woot. More to come!

Severe Warnings popped up for this lone cell by Oconto Nebraska with a nice TVS marker just south of the city. It was my calling to get my gear together and make a small jaunt north on Hwy 2 from Kearney Nebraska. This storm was to be in the Miller Nebraska (northwest of Kearney) area within the hour and I wasn't going to miss this show when its this close to home.
No other chasers on this storm and it was just this lone thunderstorm and me! Beautiful LP structure with clearly visible rotation on this storms' time lapse. Couldn't have asked for a better landscape setup with the pure flatness of northern part of South Central Nebraska.
Storm died out as this storm cell scooted almost directly due east it still had some luster left in her and she was showing off. Beautiful billowing thunderheads to end this chase day!

Storm Chasing Video from afternoon on Flickr Click Here
Late August here in Nebraska. I usually would be chasing out in Western Nebraska Eastern Colorado this time of year. Mother Nature made it dry as a desert here. Record Heat & drought in 2022 on the plains of Nebraska. This was the ONLY storm that came into range for the whole month.
Gear was prepped & ready for a month....I was prepared that afternoon. A short jaunt to my east and then north. Irrigated Corn this time of year here is about 14 feet & it will be ready for harvest soon.
Had to find a good location where there was no tall corn. Found a hill with a perfect view. Lucky to find an open view with all that corn!
Though this didn't produce a tornado. Really good definition of a rotation wall cloud under this supercell. Glad I went out that day to capture these phenomenal snaps!

Unfortunanetly the high resolution mode confirmed that my lens is slightly decentred, with a softer left side performance. Ironically, this is harder to see at normal resolutions. Some times, ignorance is bliss!

It has been an excellent start to the 2016 chase Season. Bonus was, that I had the day off and no commitments except for storm chasing. I was set for an Epic Day!
I ended up with well over 700 pic from this storm chasing event, but I've skimmed it down to about 100+. Truly this will become some of my best severe weather photography to date...
I was seriously late the game on this storm. But I was never out of the game. I had now positioned myself just to the North of Wray Colorado.
Strategically, you want to be to the south east, southwest for the best light... It's all about timing, and I thought it wouldn't produce till it was well west of my location. Giving me that perfect view of the backside rotation of the storm.
In my opinion, I found a perfect view, looking due south southeast. I ended up on the northwest side of the rotation. Dangerous yes...but this will eventually give me one excellent view of this tornado and all her glory.

Rework of an older Flickr picture. Years ago I photographed this Snowy Owl flying away and added a new background. My digital photography skills have improved since then, and here is my similar but better new 23rd version.

No, eso no es así, eso no pasa ( todo esta bien mientras solo estés imaginando, si en serio crees que te llego a pasar en algún momento, olvídalo - después terminas con el corazón medio roto y en secreto porque nunca te atreviste a contarlo - porque es muy absurdo y muy tonto como para contarlo )
I was taking landscape shots across beautiful Canyon Lake when Mrs. Pixel shouted “I'm taking the macro lens!” and quickly disappeared. It didn’t take long to find her next to a bush filled with Monarchs. I need to thank Sura for demonstrating that a 400mm lens makes a great substitute for a missing macro lens and of course Mrs. Pixel who spotted the first Monarchs of the season.

If you have the ability to cross your eyes, there’s a very good chance you can see this in 3D, and I encourage you to try! It transforms the image into something much more magical – a stereoscopic 3D image of a freezing soap bubble!
When crossing your eyes, the trick is to cross just enough so that you see three images. The image in the center will be an overlap of the left and right images, and your brain computes the difference between them as depth. Don’t be too close to a large monitor (too much eye strain) or too far from a smart phone screen (too much trouble with subtle adjustments), find the right position where you can cross your eyes and comfortably focus on the now existent middle image, and voila!

I have a stereoscope here in my studio from 1867 that presents these images wonderfully! The technology is ancient and the viewing experience is almost a lost art. In some small way I’m trying to bring it back.
This image was made with a special full-frame SLR lens made by de Wijs in The Netherlands. Sadly, they are no longer manufacturing them and they are very hard to find in secondary markets like eBay. I’ve been searching for this slightly-less-than-macro lens for a while, to be the third lens I own from that company to make 3D images and it appeared on eBay within the last month. I had to have it, and I have so many ideas to explore with it. My higher magnification lenses didn’t do well with freezing bubbles because they were too large, so I’m glad this lens arrived before the end of winter!
These images are tough to properly visualize, because depth becomes the ultimate factor in their success. The fact that you can see the depth difference between the front of the bubble and the back of it near the bottom is the main selling point here, and everything else enhances that. The editing is fairly simple, basic Lightroom edits with a trip to a free program called “Stereo Photo Maker” to help correct any alignment issues – even the best lens might not get it perfect.
It was them cropped square in Photoshop by cutting the image in half down the middle, overlaying the left side onto the right, cropping square with the “delete cropped pixels” box checked, then the canvas size was expanded 200% to the left, and the left image replaced into its proper position. A small “septim” is placed between the two images to help separate them for viewing.
It’s becoming a lost art. In some small way, I’m trying to bring it back. As archaic as it might seem, I’ll soon be offering stereoviews for sale, the most high-end productions ever done with this medium. Why? Because it fascinates me, and I hope it fascinates others. :)
