The huge Apple iPad advertisement on Union Square–at Post Street–appears to reflect the real blue sky with clouds on the screen. Reality simulates pixelization!
People were standing three deep at the Apple Store to touch the new stylish iPad... I was heavily salivating... But hey, I can wait!
At the Science Museum in London, they had a bunch of hands-on interactive media exhibits. This one took your photo, pixelized it in various ways (while teaching you about pixels), and then at the end, you could email the photos to yourself. I tried emailing these directly to Flickr, but my Flickr email address has numbers in it, which the keyboard at the museum didn't like for some reason.
Nelson makes a movie poster. Ventrlio explodes. This came about because of aaps' chronic mispronunciation of 'Paladin'. Excessive pixelization was for added humor.

We all know that life in the big city can be quite an adventure. Only now, it even contains text.
Anyways.. yesh... this was indeed originally another digital pic taken by me around my neighborhood.
(At Campbell Square Park, located between Allegheny Ave and Madison Sts, and also between Belgrade and Almond Sts. in the Port Richmond section of Philadelphia).
Afterward, I transformed it using posterization to reduce it to a mere 16 colors for the image and added pixelization.
Thereby modifying to look more like some blocky, pixelated old PC text adventure game you may have played back when PC's ran DOS.. or even on your old Commodore 64.
Erm.. you DID own a Commodore 64, didn't you? No?! *Makes a raspberry sound* Blasphemy, I tell you! :D
Weird light artifacts, this had to be overcropped for you to be able to see them, they were so tiny and so overwhelmed by the rest of the photo...sorry for the resulting pixelization but I thought they were weirdly wonderful enough that it was worth posting anyway.

當影像立體化
面前這一堆不同顏色的方塊,代表什麼?像素(pixel)作為數字化分割信息單位,在當今世代中已經成為記錄、敘述、傳遞信息的一種基本媒體元素。看到樂高積木的時候,他有所沉思,這些看似抽象的概念可以被具像地表達嗎?李天倫問自己。
在今年Detour展覽上,李天倫的作品給人留下了深刻的印象。當人人都在以實體的“公共空間”為題材創作作品時,他想到了環繞在我們周圍、無處不在的聲音。在繁忙的香港,即使是深夜兩三點,依然能聽到呼嘯而過的跑車聲,大排檔的嘈雜聲和酒吧里還未散去的人群喧囂聲,香港的公共空間充滿了噪音。而當聲音透過媒介間的轉化,以視覺的形式呈現,並且重新構成於我們身處的物理空間,將會產生出新的意義。這就是李天倫做這一系列聲波模型的構想。
這並不是他第一次做這樣的嘗試。從香港中文大學藝術系畢業後,李天倫開始從事計算機動畫的設計工作,每天觀看屏幕影像多於現實生活。看到的數字影像,令他產生運用“像素”(pixel)來創作一系列作品的想法。因為僅僅用計算機影像這樣的展示方式,無疑是受到限制的。他將數字像素分析成為不同的顏色方塊,再根據顏色的深淺明暗以不同長短的立體方塊表現,於是形成現在這種獨特的創作手法。李天倫認為,這樣的表達可以突破計算機影像展示方式的局限性。 《Pixelized: Not So Hardcore》、《Everyday Life》和《Winning 7-Eleven》都是以此思路創作。李天倫將人們熟悉的虛擬影像題材轉化成為長短不一、顏色各異的“積木”,再現於現實空間當中。
除了生活環境聲音,李天倫也對電影對白、世界名曲等聲音嘗試以另一種表現形式再創作。 《Mo Wan's Dialogue from〈In the Mood for Love〉》、《Li Zhen's Dialogue from〈In the Mood for Love〉》這兩件作品都是抽取電影《花樣年華》中的對白為創作主題,從聲音出發,把劇中主角梁朝偉及張曼玉兩位演員演繹同一句對白時的聲音,透過計算機重新處理記錄為聲波數據,再轉化為一件呈現音波高低起伏變化的實體雕塑。藉著比較兩位演員以不同聲線去演繹同一文本,輸出了兩件形態截然不同的雕塑作品。通過這一系列以數位工具進行雕塑創作的作品,李天倫在探索不同媒介之間互相交換的可能性,從而看到聲音形象化的有趣一面。
當虛無縹緲的聲音變成面前這具體的、實在的雕塑,我們不僅開始認真審視每天經歷的一切數碼產物。我們以為它們只能在屏幕裡一閃而過,殊不知,“轉化”出來了形態各異的藝術品。李天倫說,大眾雖然每天跟影像、聲音打交道,卻很少關注這些影像的產生方式,和影像技術對影像產生的影像。用立體雕塑的方式,則可以引發人們的感官和影像科技的關係。這樣直觀的表達,往往比說教要有用得多。
