Light skirts the dolomite ground in the Patriarch Grove in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest. The white dolomite rock is difficult for plants to grow on, but the bristlecones can tolerate it and have been able to carve out their niche here.
Norway is a place of endless natural beauty. Incredible fjords, winding small roads, raw tunnels carved through the bedrock and so much more. These images are from summer road trips during 2024.

The top of this mushroom is absolutely putrid. Think of diarrhea. So gross.
The Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest is home to the oldest trees in the world, Bristlecone Pines. Some of these living trees exceed 4000 years of age and exhibit spectacular growth forms of twisted and beautifully colored wood.
Mike and I went out to photograph some crossbills that had been seen on Bowes moor (thanks to Ron.hindhaugh for the location).
The two that ive put up are really record shots as its the first time we have seen them.
The ISO needed to be too high, for my liking, as the light was less than ideal and we need to find a way of getting closer as this is a big crop, more than im happy with really. Birds really need to fill 30 - 40% of the frame for me to be really happy and to do them justice to show really fine feather detail on close inspection.
this was taken with the D300, Nikon 300F2.8VRII and Nikon 1.7x TC. which really does show the quality of the Nikon 300 F2.8VRII, probably Nikon's sharpest Supertelephoto.
However Mike and I had a great day out and it was good to see the Crossbills. We will be going back.

Pine Valley or Pine Forest, a valley having huge lofty pine trees lined in rows, an artificial forest. It is one of the main attractions of Vagamon. It is a favourite mark for the lovers of nature. The Pine forests stretched over a wide area of sloppy hills.
Pines Trees are evergreen, coniferous resinous trees (or rarely shrubs), in the genus Pinus, in the family Pinaceae, growing 3–80 m tall, with the majority of species reaching 15–45 m tall.
Location: Vagamon, Idukki District, Kerala State, India.

Awesome 3 days of mountain biking in Gods Own Country in the Vagamon region.
Don't expect any strawberries on Waldsteinia a(barren strawberry) as its fruit is a cluster of achenes on a dry receptacle.
The flowers are a bright yellow and produced abundantly in late spring and early summer. Waldsteinia fragarioides is a rhizomatous plant that can cover many hundreds of square feet in habitat such as oak forests and pine forests.
Waldsteinia fragarioides is listed as a rare plant species in Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire.
This is Santosa - the contentment translated from Sankrit. We found him having wound on his neck then we adopted him. He is very friendly and playful. Everyone at the Ashram likes him especially the kids.
Brosnan Forest is especially significant because 6,000 acres of its longleaf pine habitat shelter 79 family groups of endangered red-cockaded woodpeckers, making it the world’s largest population of these birds on private property under single ownership. It also includes about 800 acres of fields planted in rye, wheat, oats, and clover as food for wildlife, including non-game and game species, and 120 acres of lakes and ponds stocked with bass, bream, and catfish.
"Looking Glass"
It's hard to believe but this mirrored pond sits on the western shore of Yellowstone Lake, on the opposite side of the road from the image I shared yesterday.
To the east of me, the wind whipped up whitecaps and stormy surf on the open water of the lake. But to the west were smooth morning reflections on a shallow pond that the wind couldn't touch.
Protected by the road and a wall of tall lodgepole pines was a place caught between the seasons. Thank you Nature for sharing!
