Clustered broomrape- I've really questioned this species several times thinking I was seeing different species, sometimes it is clustered like this pseudo- pinecone, sometimes more open like the naked broomrape, sometimes the petals are very pointed like this, sometimes appearing more rounded but they just vary it seems.

A baby pinecone sitting in a bed of moss. This was taken near a large waterfall in western Maryland. The area was under deep tree cover and very moist. There is another picture posted from Deep Creek that has a mushroom from the same spot.
