Oh the aroma of pine. There is no better fragrance on a warm day in the forest.

Who leaves the pine-tree, leaves his friend,

Unnerves his strength, invites his end.

~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Very beautiful view right next to the main road, which is an advantage in terms of accessibility. Pines Island Viewpoint is a photographers dream because of the magnificent scenery.

The start to Autumn here has been unseasonably warm and a visit to the Alfred Nicholas Gardens in Sassafras over the weekend, provided little in the way of Autumn colour, but lots in the way of inspiration!

Another fabulous day and outing with the FFF+.

I went back to retake this pic today as my lens had a huge smudge on yesterdays...It still came out ok... but this is less the smudge :) Happy Weekend!

This is an example of what a photographer friend has called “quiet photographs.” There’s no astonishing sunset, no peak piercing the clouds, no spectacular waterfall… just a quiet scene of the sort that characterizes much of our experience in the wild. I love those over-the-top astonishing moments, but I equally love the quiet, still moments and scenes like this one.

This particular scene is along the edge of Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite National Park’s high country. No one else was there (hard to believe?) and the sun had just set. These trees, the ubiquitous lodgepole pines, stand near the edge of the the open meadow, and the meadow hasn’t entirely given up to them yet, as you can see from the open spacing of the trees and the short green foliage along the ground.

I was zoomed in on this male pine grosbeak when his mate almost nailed him with snow from her higher perch.

Here's a panorama from last Saturday. Back to the default place in the Everglades National Park.

This panorama was stitched in CS6 and it is composed of 8 vertical images for a total of almost 60 MP.

I can see myself doing much more of this, I truly love it!

Hope everyone is doing great, as always, thanks for stopping by and looking, I appreciate your comments and critiques.

Seems odd to me to name a group of mountains after a valley (isn't "mountain" the exact opposite of "valley?" And come to think of it "pines" seem to be in rather short supply in the area.), but no matter, I thought these mountains, recently dusted with snow, the reddish hills in front of them, and the clouds made for a very pretty scene--a scene that will never in a billion years be repeated exactly. (Of course, in a billion years these mountains will be long gone.)

This was taken on my somewhat ill-fated trip to see the Kolob Canyon section of Zion National Park (if interested, you can read about that here: www.flickr.com/photos/80014607@N05/54385746986/in/datepos... ). This Joshua Tree was the only one I saw in the area (well, there was one other small sickly looking specimen nearby), so I suspect it was transplanted here rather than sprang up naturally.

This is a Pao combining 5 photos using my 70-300mm lens at 70mm.

Wednesday I got into a flock of a dozen or so of these guys. This was the only mature male. There were 2 Juvenile males and the rest were female.

I keep looking for bohemian waxwings and only find pine grosbeaks. A pertty good consolation prize if I hadn't seen so many recently.

The yellow ones are female and the red ones are males.

I set the camera about 5:30 and this marten appeared just after 6pm. They're visiting peanut feeders which I'd put in place to attract red squirrels. There's a lot written about the relationship between pine martens and red squirrels but my experience is that they seem to co-exist without too much fuss. Research indicates that martens and grey squirrels have a less harmonious relationship and martens predate on the larger, slower grey who spend more time on the ground and are less agile than the red. Many people believe that the pine marten has a key role in grey squirrel control which will, in the long term, help the red squirrel repopulate areas where they have become locally extinct. Time well tell.
