Pine Martens always look ungainly on the ground with their short front legs and longer back legs. But these guys can't half shift through the trees like grease lightning when fighting for territory or hunting prey. They are also very accomplished killers of grey squirrels, small birds and rodents.

I've just returned from another trip to Scotland, this time the West coast, where we have had some fantastic weather and spent most of the days exploring the beautiful coastal sites. However, each evening was dedicated to trying to photograph some of the local Pine Marten.

This Abert's squirrel was feasting on a pine cone overhead. It was seriously backlit and I didn't want to scare it away by tromping around to get a better shot (with my dog, no less!). Nik Color Efex to the rescue! Not the sharpest shot, but still cute.

Abert's squirrels are native to the Rocky Mountains and like ponderosa pine forests. Where are its ear tufts, you ask? They often ru off at the end of summer, to regrow over the winter

Note: used Detail Extractor and Pro Contrast, tweaking in the Dynamic Contrast slider.

Oh the aroma of pine. There is no better fragrance on a warm day in the forest.

Very beautiful view right next to the main road, which is an advantage in terms of accessibility. Pines Island Viewpoint is a photographers dream because of the magnificent scenery.

The start to Autumn here has been unseasonably warm and a visit to the Alfred Nicholas Gardens in Sassafras over the weekend, provided little in the way of Autumn colour, but lots in the way of inspiration!

Another fabulous day and outing with the FFF+.

The week we were in Juan Les Pines this lady was a familiar sight doing the rounds selling her little toys.

During a nice warm afternoon I had the door open and I could hear Pine Siskins in the trees. It took a while to actually spot them and they did not stay still for long.

Pine Siskin's showed up. I have not seen any in my area for a few years. What a treat!!!

I went back to retake this pic today as my lens had a huge smudge on yesterdays...It still came out ok... but this is less the smudge :) Happy Weekend!

“Pine Forest, Evening” — A High Sierra pine forest in soft evening light.

This is an example of what a photographer friend has called “quiet photographs.” There’s no astonishing sunset, no peak piercing the clouds, no spectacular waterfall… just a quiet scene of the sort that characterizes much of our experience in the wild. I love those over-the-top astonishing moments, but I equally love the quiet, still moments and scenes like this one.

This particular scene is along the edge of Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite National Park’s high country. No one else was there (hard to believe?) and the sun had just set. These trees, the ubiquitous lodgepole pines, stand near the edge of the the open meadow, and the meadow hasn’t entirely given up to them yet, as you can see from the open spacing of the trees and the short green foliage along the ground.

Back in February, the pine warbler became a welcome addition to the backyard adding color and excitement for the camera.
