A side view of the previous male. This view shows some markings helpul in distinguishing Bar-winged immatures/females from other King Skimmers in NC. The wing pruinescence is a giveaway, but might not be present in younger males or when viewed from a slightly different angle. People often envision a cartoon wolf head in the markings of the thorax of King Skimmers (here the two ears point upwards and flank the front wing, and the wolf seems to be laughing). In the Bar-winged, the ears are relatively long and well-formed and the dark pigmentation in the suture behind the hind ear broadens as it goes away from the wings. Found in Polk Co, OR. This is an aberrant or some may say "paradox" hypomelanistic because he has spots of normal pigmentation. This likely means that the hypomelanism is likely environmentally caused and not genetic.

This rare bird was spotted at Franklin Point, near Gazos Creek in California. Leucism is a condition characterized by reduced pigmentation in animals. Unlike albinism, it is caused by a reduction in all types of skin pigment, not just melanin.
This specimen was looking a bit worse for wear - possible at the end of its life?
The male usually has much more extensive pigmentation on the wings than other Calopteryx species in its range: in the south east of its range (the Balkans and Turkey) the wings are entirely metallic blue while in other areas, there are clear areas at the base and tip of the wing. Immature insects often have much paler, browner wings. They have metallic blue-green bodies and blue-green eyes.
The female has dark brown iridescent wings, a white patch near the tip of the wings (called a pseudopterostigma) and a metallic green body with a bronze tip of the abdomen.
I am guessing this was a female?
Queen of the night tulip... lost its pigmentation and grew pink...planted a couple of years ago... my garden constantly delights me!!
Caught this beauty at one of our bird feeders during the fall. It is an adult female goldfinch (non-breeding) and as you can see, it has a white patch on it's head and above the beak because it is pied leucistic. It is the reduction of pigmentation that causes this.

This is the largest Eastern Tibicen species. In fact, it appears to be our largest and most robust North American Cicada (north of Mexico).
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
1) SIZE: Avg. 2.25-2.75 inches (up to ~3.0") in total length (incl. wings).
2) COLORATION: 2 color forms "Olive-Green/Olive-Taupe-Tan" or "Rust/Reddish-brown"
In the reddish color form, the wing veins are also characterized by being a deep reddish-brown. Unlike resonans the wings are broader and the cicada is typically more pruinose (i.e. well-developed white bands on the abdomen)
The pronotum of these cicadas is usually olive or taupe (rarely reddish) with a well developed central pattern
3) PRUINOSITY: These cicadas often look as though they are molded or have been dusted in "powdered sugar". No other US species is so pruinose (NOTE: This white wax will wipe off and over time, esp. in older specimens, much of the white can be lost! Reduced white wax often changes the general appearance of these insects)
4) EYES: when alive/fresh, the eyes are a light - often described as a sandy tan, grey-tan or rarely purplish-grey or purplish-tan.
6) VENTER: Pruinose / No dark pigmentation
7) MALES: oblique round olive-yellow colored opercula (rarely reddish-tan in color)

The white tiger or bleached tiger is a pigmentation variant of the Bengal tiger, which is reported in the wild from time to time in the Indian states of Assam, West Bengal and Bihar in the Sunderbans region and especially in the former State of Rewa.Such a tiger has the black stripes typical of the Bengal tiger, but carries a white or near-white coat.

This is "blondie", a leucistic bald eagle. Leucism is similar to albinism except where albinism is complete lack of pigmentation, leucism is partial loss of pigmentation.
Heterochromia (different eye pigmentation) in my sister-in-law's cross-collies - they are sisters, so can anywone tell me the odds of this ocurring please?
Collected this one from leaf litter. After many photos of its face, it appears to me to have only 1 very long unpaired midfacial setae. It has very dark lateral body pigmentation. Looks strange to me, so I collected it and tried to document it. Will probably turn out to be just a Ptenothrix sp.3.

A rare bird indeed. Mistaken by many for a Whooping Crane. This bird is a genetic variant, partial albino. It does not get the characterisitc pigmentation in its feathers. Any brownish pigment is picked up from the soil as with all Sandhills. I was lucky enough to see and photograph this bird over several days.

Full black pigmentation is present though in the primaries. This individual is believed to be breeding in Finland and spends each winter in Amsterdam. More images.

Bijlmermeer, 19 november 2011. W[LSB] (Arnhem 3651665). Leucistische adulte Kokmeeuw. Deze meeuw mist het pigment op de kop en de mantel- en schouderveren. Volledig zwart pigment is echter aanwezig in de handpennen. Deze meeuw broed naar verluid in Finland maar brengt elke winter in Amsterdam door. Meer foto's.

The left side of this young bird's tail (right in this ventral view) consists of new feathers which haven't reached full length but have a slightly different shape and pigmentation pattern than the older juvenile feathers (to he left in this view).
Dave Campbell, one of the elephant trainers at The Louisville Zoo, directed Mikky, a 19 year old African Elephant, to sit on the back of Punch, a 35 year old Asian Elephant during Saturday afternoon's show for zoo visitors. African Elephants have larger ears than the Asian Elephants. Asian Elephants, also called Indian Elephants, are born black and often show signs of aging by "Pinking" on the face, trunk and ears. Pinking is a pigmentation change not unlike gray hair in people. . .
The amount of dark pigmentation in the dorsal banding can be highly variable in this race, as is the case throughout this species range. This adult female has reduced dark pigment in the dorsal patterning.

Gulf Coast Box Turtle, Franklin County, Florida. This is an old male showing the typical white pigmentation on the head and parts of the limbs.
Recently, this turtle has been classified as a Florida Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina bauri) and T. c. major is no longer accepted.
Brampton, Ontario. He was with a flock of normal looking Canada Goose. Leucism is related to loss of feather pigmentation which also weakens flight feathers. To quote BTO "There is also evidence that leucistic birds might, on occasion, not be recognised or accepted by a potential mate". How unfortunate.
