Common Dace - Leuciscus leuciscus (Linnaeus, 1758) [more of this species]
A riverine species most similar to a small chub. The main difference is the shape of the anal fins. In the dace they convex shaped where as in chub they are concave. Dace also have a smaller mouth and the scales are dark at the base, where as chub scales have pigmentation only on the edges and not the base.

The white tiger or bleached tiger is a pigmentation variant of the Bengal tiger, which is reported in the wild from time to time in the Indian states of Madhya Pradesh, Assam, West Bengal and Bihar in the Sunderbans region and especially in the former State of Rewa. This serial of photos offers an impression of details of the collection with Minoan Art, belonging to the Palace of Knossos. the Archaeological Museum in Heraklion has been completely renewed. Lots of amazing information can be read next to art objects.
It is not allowed to use flash when making photos. This, and the many visitors made it hardly possible to make really sharp photos in some seconds.
My camera is a rather cheap one and creates curved lines.
Some photos are not sharp, but I kept them anyway.
Altogether it has been a deeply impressing visit, moving, deeply moving because of the mystical, spiritual, mental and emotional depth of the Art.
The Minoans were utterly creative.
Their art is comparable with our modern art. Their use of colors makes the art characteristic: pastel colors (modest in pigmentation), terra colors, with blue, green and ochre.
Often I edited the photos in several ways. Or cropped them, to attract the attention for details.

Although many consider this a "trash tree," I think the staghorn sumac is attractive, especially in the Fall. Very few trees can equal it in intensity of pigmentation.
I figure the pigments are probably mostly carotenoids, but the intensity of deep reds could also result from a dash of anthocyanins.

Again, loads of Sminthurinus globular springtails at my local churchyard today. I'm photographing as many as I can to understand pigmentation patterns (see previous collages).
Number 5 is a typical Sminthurinus aureus with no significant transverse abdominal banding. Numbers 1,3 and 4 look like the forma reticulata variety. Numbers 2 and 6 have a darker pattern but when does f. reticulata become Sminthurinus reticulatus?
As an aside, number 4 is a juvenile at about 0.3mm. With a 5x hand-lens (and my poor eyesight), this is about the smallest individual where I can see that it's definitely a springtail. Don't know what size they are when they first hatch out.

A side view of the previous male. This view shows some markings helpul in distinguishing Bar-winged immatures/females from other King Skimmers in NC. The wing pruinescence is a giveaway, but might not be present in younger males or when viewed from a slightly different angle. People often envision a cartoon wolf head in the markings of the thorax of King Skimmers (here the two ears point upwards and flank the front wing, and the wolf seems to be laughing). In the Bar-winged, the ears are relatively long and well-formed and the dark pigmentation in the suture behind the hind ear broadens as it goes away from the wings. Found in Polk Co, OR. This is an aberrant or some may say "paradox" hypomelanistic because he has spots of normal pigmentation. This likely means that the hypomelanism is likely environmentally caused and not genetic.

This rare bird was spotted at Franklin Point, near Gazos Creek in California. Leucism is a condition characterized by reduced pigmentation in animals. Unlike albinism, it is caused by a reduction in all types of skin pigment, not just melanin.
This specimen was looking a bit worse for wear - possible at the end of its life?
The male usually has much more extensive pigmentation on the wings than other Calopteryx species in its range: in the south east of its range (the Balkans and Turkey) the wings are entirely metallic blue while in other areas, there are clear areas at the base and tip of the wing. Immature insects often have much paler, browner wings. They have metallic blue-green bodies and blue-green eyes.
The female has dark brown iridescent wings, a white patch near the tip of the wings (called a pseudopterostigma) and a metallic green body with a bronze tip of the abdomen.
I am guessing this was a female?
