Morpho butterflies (genus Morpho – about 80 species) are forest dwellers that venture into sunny clearings to warm themselves. They are neotropical species found mostly in South America as well as Mexico and Central America. Morphos range in wingspan from the 7.5 cm (3 inch) M. rhodopteron to the imposing 20 cm (8 inch)

Sunset Morpho, M. hecuba. The name morpho, means change, modification or form, and is also an epithet of Aphrodite and Venus. Most species are colored in metallic, shimmering shades of blue, purple and green. These colors are not a result of pigmentation but are an example of iridescence derived from structural components: the microscopic scales covering the wings

reflect incident light repeatedly at successive layers, leading to interference. Thus the colors produced vary with the viewing angle. This structure may be likened to a photonic crystal. The lamellate structure of their wing scales has been studied as a model in the development of fabrics, dye‐free paints, and anti‐counterfeit technology used in currency. The iridescent lamellae are only present on the dorsal side of their wings, leaving the ventral side brown. In most species

only the males are colorful and males are highly territorial. The lamellae reflect up to 70% of light falling on them, including any ultraviolet (UV). The eyes are thought to be highly sensitive to UV light and therefore the males are able to see each other from great distances. The ventral side is decorated with numerous ocelli or eyespots.

this is a photo that i took a few weeks ago on the west mountain. this doe is a partial leucistic deer (by definition, leucism (a.k.a. achromia) is a state of reduced pigmentation that can occur in individuals of almost all species of animals. the animals skin may appear pink, its fur anywhere from beige to blond to pure white. however leucistic animals have normally colored eyes. leucism is produced by the expression of a single recessive gene. partial expression of leucism can lead to an animal having a pied or spotted appearance. by contrast albinism if a complete lack of pigmentation).

First day out this year looking for springtails. "Golden" Sminthurinus varieties very much in evidence, some more easy to ID than others. Here's my suggestions:

1. Sminthurinus aureus - non-feeding instar.

2. Sminthurinus aureus/reticulatus - feeding instar (see notes below).

3. Sminthurinus reticulatus - non-feeding instar.

4. Sminthurinus reticulatus - non-feeding instar.

Frans Janssens cautions me about making too many assumptions about colour (which is affected by maturity, levels of pigmentation and colour of gut contents) but it seems that some S. reticulatus individuals have what I describe as a "marmalade" colouration (example 3) and others a more olive-green hue (example 4).

I'm also thinking that in feeding instars of S. reticulatus, the bands of pigmentation may be obscured by the colour of the gut contents showing through the cuticle (as is happening with example 2). This would make its differentiation from S. aureus more difficult. I've taken lots of photographs of "golden" Sminthurinus but don't seem to have encountered any feeding instars of S. reticulatus yet!

I've been looking at lots of images of Sminthurinus aureus and reticulatus to see if there are features other than the transverse stripes and posterior "Y"-shaped areas of pigmentation that could be used to differentiate them. I've noticed that lots of S. reticulatus have a tri-lobed "splash" of pigmentation on the rear/lateral area of the abdomen that is not apparent on S. aureus (see exampels 2 and 4 above) and is not obscured by the colour of the gut contents. Perhaps example 2 is S. reticulatus with the banding obscured and not S. aureus??

Bald eagle

Haliaeetus leucocephalus

This is "blondie", a leucistic bald eagle. Leucism is similar to albinism except where albinism is complete lack of pigmentation, Leucism is partial loss of pigmentation. A happenchance meeting with a fantastic birder, Charlotte, led to me finally meeting Blondie.

To the casual observer the massive Marabou Stork with its balding, scabby head and pendulous pink air sac may appear to be one of the ugliest creatures in the world. If this same observer were to notice the Marabou's fondness for carrion and its habit of squirting excrement onto its own legs he or she would probably consider the original opinion to be justified. It takes a real bird lover to see past all of this stork's bizarre adornments to recognize the scruffy charm underneath.

The most distinctive feature of the Marabou is the nearly bald, spotted, scab-encrusted head, with its huge meat-cleaver bill. Dark, wispy hair-like feathers are scattered sparsely across the head, neck, and nape. The bare skin of the head and neck is predominantly pink to magenta in color, with spots of darker pigmentation concentrating around the face and extending down into the upper portion of the horn-colored bill. In breeding season the back of the neck turns a beautiful pale blue-green, and the spots on the face and forehead become encrusted with dried blood.

African Lion Safari is a Canadian owned family business created in the name of conservation. Their manner of exhibiting animals is completely different from the traditional approach; that is, the visitor is caged in the car, and the animals roam in 2 to 20 hectare (5 to 50 acre) reserves.

African Lion Safari first opened their gates to the public in 1969 with 40 lions in 3 reserves; today the park houses in excess of 1000 animals of over 100 species. After 40 years they have been successful with breeding 30 species that are considered endangered, and 20 or more species that are considered threatened. The original idea of "maintaining self-sustaining populations of species in decline" is still their priority.

Masai Giraffe

Giraffa camelopardalis tippelskirchi

Conservation Status: Least Concern

Originally, the Masai giraffe lived throughout Africa. However, due to deforestation and habitat loss, they are only found in the savannahs of Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia, and Tanzania.

Range:

The savannahs of eastern Africa.

Note: In prehistoric times, this single species ranger over most open areas in Africa. The giraffe range began to shrink 1,400 years ago to its present size.

Diet:

Giraffes are browsers, plucking leaves, buds and fruits from trees such as acacia, mimosa and wild apricot.

Fun Fact!

A giraffe's 18-inch tongue helps extend its reach way up into the treetops and curls in between spiny thorns on acadia trees. It is believed that the black pigmentation prevents the tongue from getting sunburned.

It is 'Rhea Openiano'. I will say more about this later. But what you see here is one inflorescence from when it was judged. The previous photo is from an inflorescence that had not opened when it was judged. This sort of substantial difference in red pigmentation between blooming just baffles me.

Through a digital process of converting colour images to black and white while manipulating the colour channels, I have studied the skin through lifestyle of humans. Skin pigmentation, sun damage, diet choice are some of the factors that get picked up in this style of digital manipulation.

The pink areas on the Asian elephants lack pigmentation. Individual elephants have different amounts of non-pigmented areas. As they age, many elephants lose pigmentation around the trunk, ears, and neck. De-pigmentation is not, however, a good indication of an animal’s age. Similarly, some people’s hair goes gray earlier than others.

It produces a single leaf in the fall which stays green throughout the winter with purple pigmentation on the underside. The leaf dies off in the spring before the plant flowers in the summer. Tipularia has spots on its leaves and nectar spurs on flowers

Presley Tuggle, 5, from Saltville, VA grabs an Audible Egg during the egg hunt in Abingdon, Virginia on Saturday. Tuggle has Ocular albinism a genetic condition that primarily affects the eyes. This condition reduces the coloring (pigmentation) of the iris, which is the colored part of the eye, and the retina, which is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. The egg she has collected has a switch to turn off the beep.

Time, gravity and excess sun exposure can cause deepening of facial lines and uneven pigmentation. This gives an older, tired look to an otherwise youthful complexion. Laser skin resurfacing can reduce, and often remove, much of this damage to the skin and literally "turn back the clock". A tired looking, sun damaged face can obtain an entirely new, fresh look with healthy, glowing smooth skin. This is the goal of laser resurfacing.

There are different levels of laser resurfacing available, depending on the patient's condition, the level of "down time" or recovery period a patient can tolerate, and cost.

I took inspiration from a creator on Instagram who had posted this look, I really loved it and decided to re-create it for my own Instagram. I used face paints to get the pigmentation I wanted and used various different brushes to create different textures and to blend the colours nicely. I used colourful gems to replicate the Christmas tree baubles. I also used latex soaked cotton balls which I ripped up and covered in green paint to create dimensions for the trees.

A rare bird indeed. Mistaken by many for a Whooping Crane. This bird is a genetic variant, partial albino. It does not get the characterisitc pigmentation in its feathers. Any brownish pigment is picked up from the soil as with all Sandhills. I was lucky enough to see and photograph this bird over several days.

The Carolina anole (Anolis carolinensis) is an arboreal lizard found primarily in the southeastern United States and some Caribbean islands. Other common names include the green anole, American anole and red-throated anole. It is sometimes referred to as the American chameleon due to its color-changing abilities; however, many lizards are capable of this, and anoles are not true chameleons.

This species is native to North America, where it is found mainly in the southeastern parts of the continent. Anoles are most abundant on the Atlantic Coastal Plains in North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida and Georgia, and the Gulf Coastal Plain in Texas. The species has been introduced into Hawaii and the Ogasawara Islands.

Anole males are often territorial. In fact some have even been witnessed fighting their own reflection in mirrored glass. Sometimes the other male will be an extremely invasive Cuban Brown Anole.

The typical coloration for a green anole ranges from the richest and brightest of greens to the darkest of browns, with little variation in between. The color spectrum is a resultant of three layers of pigment cells or chromatophores: the xanthophores, responsible for the yellow pigmentation; cyanophores, responsible for the blue pigmentation, and melanophores, responsible for the brown and black pigmentation when the anole is cold or stressed.

There are a few exceptions which are caused when a lack in one of the pigment genes occurs. These color mutations are also called phases. The rare blue-phased green anole lacks xanthophores which results in a blue, rather red, often baby or pastel blue, anole. These specimens have become a recent popularity in the trade market. When the anole is completely lacking xanthophores it is said to be axanthic and the animal will have a completely pastel or baby-blue hue. They are extremely rare—usually produced in 1 out of every 20,000 individual anoles in the wild. Another 'phase' is the yellow-phased green anole, which lacks cyanophores. Colonies of these rare color-phased anoles have been reported, but anoles with these color mutations rarely live for long, since the green color provides camouflage for hunting down prey as well as hiding from predators.

The anole's diet consists of small insects such as the cricket and the grasshopper. It may also eat grasses. Crickets are a good food for them as well as moths. Many people that keep green anoles as pets feed them mealworms, grubs, and maggots.

The Brown Anole (Anolis sagrei) is a highly invasive lizard in the same genus as the Carolina anole (Anolis carolinensis). It is native to Cuba and several other Caribbean islands, but has been introduced to Florida and has spread through the state. It has seriously depleted the population of carolina anoles throughout its range, due to competing with them for food and habitat. Some think that these lizards spread when they laid their eggs in potted plants at nurseries, which were then shipped throughout the state.
