Photo Caption: Albinism is a genetic condition that occurs in one out of every seventeen thousand people. Although there are different types and degrees of albinism, in all cases it is characterized by the evident lack or reduction of melanic pigmentation of eyes, skin and hair; in addition to a severe decrease in vision.
Albinos should take care of sun exposure more than the rest of the population because they can suffer sun burns and are more prone to the appearance of skin cancer.
In addition to these physical challenges, people with albinism must also face psychological challenges of looking different.

You know, I didn't realize that this picture is of three generations, showing the gene's expression in the middle one. It's also a great African tableaux.
For a long while I titled this photo "Leucism," mostly based on the eyes of the woman. It is albinism. What I find unusual is that in Zambia and South Africa, I've seen little of this, yet in Moz, it was almost a daily happening to see someone with this.

What is a White Squirrel?
White squirrels are almost always a white version of the eastern grey squirrel. There are a few types of genetic aberrations that cause the white coats. The first is albinism, caused by a mutation on a gene that codes for pigmentation. Albinos have red eyes. The other is a white morph, caused by a different gene. It is a naturally occurring trait of eastern grey squirrels that is very, very rare. In our study, we’re trying to figure out just how rare.
Why are there white squirrels?
For some odd reason, eastern grey squirrels in the US do have a gene that will make their coats white. It’s somewhat rare to see a white squirrel, though, because white squirrels are likely highly selected against. In other words, predators to squirrels such as hawks really like it when their prey is highlighted white!
There are a few towns in the US, though, that have very high numbers of white squirrels. This could be for a few reasons. First, predators in towns tend to be low. This cancels out the negative selection against the white morph. Sometimes in towns, a few neighbors will also select against the normal coloration of eastern grey squirrel. Yes, that happens. After a few generations, all you get are whites, and they can spread to the rest of the town! Fascinating!

White Gold.
Did you know that goldfinches came in either yellow or white gold?? Ok so maybe not, this is actually called Leucism, its a condition in which skin or feathers looses partial pigmentation. Its very much different from an albino form. I first saw this goldfinch several months ago at a neighbors feeder walking the dogs. A few weeks ago it was at my feeder, now its becoming a regular, and since its a special regular, i have been waiting to photograph it. Luckily the high teen temps really ramp up feeder activity.
The Mandarinfish. This is a small, brightly colored fish endemic to the Pacific Ocean in an area ranging from Australia to the Ryukyu Islands. They are reef dwelling fish, and prefer inshore reefs and sheltered lagoons for their habitat. Though they are quite common they are not often noticed in the wild, due to their bottom feeding habits. They attain a maximum length of approximately 2.4 inches (6 cm). They feed primarily upon small crustaceans and other invertebrates. Of scientific note is the fact that they are one of only two known species of fish whose blue coloring comes from cell pigmentation instead of being due to thin-film interference from piles of flat, thin and reflective purine crystals. #ourbreathingplanet

Great White Herons are simply Great Blue Herons with pigmentation issues - at least by present taxonomic standards; it was formerly considered a separate species. They're native to South Florida, but often wander north after nesting season, sometimes hundreds of miles. They've been recorded here a few times over the decades. Would appear to have bad eye sight and like's to bark. Though we keep that down to a dull roar.
Does not seem to be the brightest "bulb" in the pack.

Another native of south-west Western Australia. Perched on a garden stake in a bush-garden in Boranup, Western Australia. Regarded as a yellow robin that is lacking pigmentation.
A Day at the Zoo
The white tiger or bleached tiger is a pigmentation variant of the Bengal tiger, which is reported in the wild from time to time in the Indian states of Madhya Pradesh, Assam, West Bengal and Bihar in the Sunderbans region and especially in the former State of Rewa. Such a tiger has the black stripes typical of the Bengal tiger, but carries a white or near-white coat.
The white Bengal tigers are distinctive due to the color of their fur - and are not albinos. The white fur caused by a lack of the pigment pheomelanin, which is found in Bengal tigers with orange color fur. When compared to Bengal tigers, the white Bengal tigers tend to grow faster and heavier than the orange Bengal tiger. They also tend to be somewhat bigger at birth, and as fully grown adults. White Bengal tigers are fully grown when they are 2–3 years of age. White male tigers reach weights of 200 to 230 kilograms and can grow up to 3 meters in length. As with all tigers, the white Bengal tiger’s stripes are like fingerprints, with no two tigers having the same pattern. The stripes of the tiger are a pigmentation of the skin; if an individual were to be shaved, its distinctive coat pattern would still be visible.
Leucistic birds have less pigmentation than normal, so they will appear white or pale, in varying degrees. This is not an albino since there is some pigmentation and the eyes are not pink.
Leucism is a general term for the phenotype resulting from defects in pigment cell differentiation and/or migration from the neural crest to skin, hair or feathers during development. This results in either the entire surface (if all pigment cells fail to develop) or patches of body surface (if only a subset are defective) having a lack of cells capable of making pigment.
As opposed to White Tiger, there is a variety of still rarer tigers called Black or Melanistic Tigers, who genetically have more Melanin, the black pigmentation. This zoo has two of them.
