This view looks across the relatively flat caldeira floor from Serra Ribeirinha which marks the caldera rim to the southwest. On the horizon, in the clouds, lies Serra Cume which marks the east rim of the caldeira. The caldeira is 7km (4.3 miles) in diameter and contains 5 secondary scoria/cinder cones hence the name, Cinco Picos.

El pico mediano es un habitante de las grandes espesuras forestales, de los bosques viejos, bien estructurados y con variedad de especies leñosas, donde abunden los grandes y añosos árboles, los troncos podridos y la madera muerta. Es, en definitiva, un morador de bosques maduros, algo que no abunda precisamente en nuestro territorio, donde este picamaderos está recluido en unos pocos enclaves propicios del norte peninsular, en los que corre un grave riesgo de extinción a causa del aislamiento de sus
poblaciones.

Identificación
Este pícido muestra un aspecto y patrón de coloración muy parecidos a los del pico picapinos, del que se diferencia, sin embargo, por poseer un tamaño algo menor, la cabeza más redondeada, el pico no tan largo y la totalidad del píleo de un llamativo color rojo. La bigotera —ancha y negra— no enlaza en ningún caso con el pico ni la nuca. El dimorfismo sexual es muy sutil, ya que el macho simplemente presenta el píleo de un color rojo más intenso que la hembra, y algo más extendido por la nuca. Los jóvenes, como ocurre en otros pícidos, lucen una librea menos contrastada y con los colores más apagados.
Canto
El reclamo de alerta consiste en un fuerte y penetrante aaak-aaakaaaaak, mientras que el canto territorial del macho es muy parecido al de otros pícidos, esto es, una repetición rápida de notas explosivas y nerviosas, kuick-kuick-kuick. El tamborileo de reclamo que produce al percutir sobre los troncos resulta más rítmico y rápido que el golpeteo que ocasiona cuando busca alimento o taladra.
Este es mi padre picando almendras que el mismo recoge de sus dos almendros. Gracias a él siempre tenemos almendras tostaditas caseras. Esta misma tarde me decía que aunque lleva años haciéndolo nunca se ha picado un dedo, jeje!
Panorámica de los Picos de Urbión desde el mirador de la Laguna Negra, la cual se puede apreciar en esa "mancha verde" a la derecha. Y ¿por que Laguna Negra si es verde? pues porque antes lo era. Según las investigaciones de los responsables del parque, la causa es la proliferación de algas debido a la subida de temperatura del agua, cosa que sucede desde, mas o menos, el año 2016, otro signo más del calentamiento global. Al fondo a la izquierda se puede ver el conglomerado de rocas que forma el Pico Urbión, a cuyos pies nace el rio Duero del que mi "pueblo" toma el apellido.
The Picos de Europa ("Peaks of Europe", also the Picos) are a mountain range extending for about 20 km (12 mi), forming part of the Cantabrian Mountains in northern Spain. The range is situated in the Autonomous Communities of Asturias, Cantabria and Castile and León.
Another image from the summit of Pico de Canigou. The prominent cross marks the summit and has been adorned with all manner of Catalonian decorations. Seemingly the annual celebration to mark the high point of the region had taken place just a few days before.

I took a lot of images when I was coming back down from the summit of Pico Ruivo. The sun was rising and illuminating the landscape as the clouds began to part below.
Madeira is such a wonderful island to visit as a photographer. There are so many different types of landscape and seascape opportunities on a relatively small island. This was my third visit and I can't wait to return again.
Early morning light hits the rocky faces of the majestic Pico's of Madeira. This is the view from around 6,000 feet on the upper slopes of Pico Ruivo looking across towards Pico do Areeiro.
You can make out the Portuguese Air Force Air Defence Radar Station to the left of the highest point. This is by the summit of Pico do Areeiro and forms part of NATO's Air Defence System,
This was taken on my way back down from Pico Ruivo after making it to the top well before sunrise. You can also see one of the many dead trees that provide strange ghostly subjects amongst the lush vegetation. This was a morning that will live long in my memory having climbed up through the clouds in the dark to witness scenes like this one.

I took this shot when I was on my way back down from a dawn summitting of Pico Ruivo, in Madeira.
I spotted this lady making her way past one of the shelters on her way up. I liked the way the paved pathway meandered through the landscape, so I took a quick shot as I raced back down to get back to the Hotel for a well earned breakfast.

Pico Viejo is a volcano located on the island of Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain). It is the second highest peak of Tenerife and the Canary Islands (after Mt Teide) with a height of 3,135 m above sea level.
This volcano is part of the volcanic complex Teide-Pico Viejo formation which began about 200,000 years ago in the center of the island. Its crater, about 800 meters in diameter, is one of the satellites craters around Mt Teide.
Historical activity associated with the Montaña Teide - Pico Viejo stratovolcanoes occurred in 1798 from the Narices del Teide on the western flank of Pico Viejo. Eruptive material from Pico Viejo-Montaña Teide-Montaña Blanca partially fills the Las Cañadas caldera.
