ENGLISH

Gerbera L., is a genus of ornamental plants from the sunflower family (Asteraceae). It was named in honor of the German naturalist Traugott Gerber, a friend of Carolus Linnaeus.

It has approximately 30 species in the wild, extending to South America, Africa, Madagascar, and tropical Asia. The first scientific description of a Gerbera was made by J.D. Hooker in Curtis's Botanical Magazine in 1889 when he described Gerbera jamesonii, a South African species also known as Transvaal daisy or Barberton Daisy.

Gerbera species bear a large capitulum with striking, 2-lipped ray florets in yellow, orange, white, pink or red colors. The capitulum, which has the appearance of a single flower, is actually composed of hundreds of individual flowers. The morphology of the flowers varies depending on their position in the capitulum.

Gerbera is very popular and widely used as a decorative garden plant or as cut flowers. The domesticated cultivars are mostly a result of a cross between Gerbera jamesonii and another South African species Gerbera viridifolia. The cross is known as Gerbera hybrida. Thousands of cultivars exist. They vary greatly in shape and size. Colors include white, yellow, orange, red, and pink. The center of the flower is sometimes black. Often the same flower can have petals of several different colors.

Gerbera is commercially important. It is the fifth most used cut flower in the world (after rose, carnation, chrysanthemum, and tulip). It is also used as a model organism in studying flower formation. Gerbera contains naturally occurring coumarin derivatives.

CASTELLANO

"Always Tomorrow"

performed/written: Gloria Estefan

I've been alone inside myself far too long

I never really wanted it that way but I let it happen

If I could do it all again

My life would be

Infinitely better than before

I wouldn't waste a moment

Make time for laughing with my friends

Make love make music make amends

Try to make a difference

Try to love

Try to understand

Instead of just giving up

I'd use the power at my command

But there's always tomorrow

To start over again

Things will never stay the same

The only one sure thing is change

That's why there's always tomorrow

I guess it took a little time for me to see

The reason I was born into this world

and what I'd have to go through

Before I finally realize that I could be

Infinitely better than before, definitely stronger

I'll face whatever comes my way

Savor each moment of the day

Love as many people as I can along the way

Help someone who's given up

If its just to raise my eyes and pray

(chorus)

Before your last setting sun

And everything your heart has longed for

Has yet to be won

Yes there's always always always tomorrow

Though people come and they go

But if you've brought some love to their lives

Then you've got something to show

Always tomorrow

This dress is the ugliest dress I have ever bought. I liked the style but hated the pattern. Anyways, when I wore it....my aunt just loved it. I thought it was cute. She said it reminded her of a blouse she made with almost the same pattern. Just thought I'd share that with you.

A place for reading the story of the past

At the end of the 19th century, Albert Gaudry, holder of the chair of palaeontology and a promoter of evolutionist ideas in France, undertook to present Paris with a new institution dedicated to comparative anatomy and palaeontology. "If", he said, "man is unable to read the future, this indeed being one of the greatest challenges of his destiny, then he should attempt to read his past".

A rare Candon scroll console table

Estimate: PHP 120,000 - 140,000

Last quarter, 19th century

Candon, Ilocos Sur

Red narra

88.5 x 98 x 51 cm (35 x 38 1/2 x 20 in)

Provenance:

Formerly from the heirs of Josefa Abaya of Candon City

In furniture, the Late Classical style popular in Europe in 1835-1850 is known as the Pillar and Scroll style in America. It is characterized by C- and S-curves that were cut into pillars and scrolls as primary visual element. This pair of console tables, offered in separate lots, was influenced by this style as it reached the Philippines decades later. It looks stately and elegant, and one is immediately drawn to the curvaceous scroll supports decorated with turned bosses, and the shapely foliated scroll ornament to the 3-inch thick lower shelf. The corniced double top is attenuated at the bottom and widens to the top, the same archetypal shape found in the Ilocos comoda de poste. The table stands on claw feet at the front. When found in situ, these tables on which the family’s venerated santos were enshrined, sat at either side of the door leading to one of the bedrooms.

Josefa Abaya is a descendant of local hero Isabelo Abaya (1854 - 1900), who despite being from a prominent and rich family founded Espiritu de Candon, the revolutionary faction of the Katipunan in Ilocos Sur. He led the 'Cry of Candon' in 1898 which drove the Spaniards away and declared a free Republic of Candon, less than three months before the declaration of the Philippine Independence in June 1898. He is now recognized as one of the founders of Candon, the tobacco capital of the Philippines.

Luna - Smashing Pumpkins

What moon songs do you sing your baby?

What sunshine do you bring?

Who belongs? Who decides who's crazy?

Who rights wrongs where others cling?

I'll sing for you if you want me to

I'll give to you

And it's a chance I'll have to take

And it's a chance I'll have to break

I go along just because I'm lazy

I go along to be with you

And those moon songs that you sing your baby

Will be the songs to see you through

I'll hear your song, if you want me to

I'll sing along

And it's a chance I'll have to take

And it's a chance I'll have to break

I'm in love with you

I'm in love with you

I'm in love with you

I'm in love with you

So in love, I'm in love with you

With you, I'm in love with you

I'm in love with you

So in love, I'm in love with you

I'm, I'm so in love

I'm in love with you

The 18 months we spent living in Florida we were surrounded by frogs - billions of them. Florida is home to the water retention pond, more widely known by the rest of us as "drainage ditches", which are almost always filled with water. This provides happy places for swinging frogs to meet, hang out, and breed.

The raucous noise of thousands of frogs gathering outside your bedroom window is a sound not to be mistaken for anything else. And, when the new froglings hatch, all hell really breaks loose. The resulting noise is nearly deafening.

We had a pair of frogs that lived behind a large window shutter next to our front door. I'd often find one or both of them hanging about the porch light, waiting for food to come along.

We arrived here in Tulsa at the end of November. As spring stole over our fair city, replete with the sounds of thunderstorms and tornado sirens, I was greeted by a familiar, haunting call - frogs.

Oklahoma isn't a particularly wet place, lying as it does on the door step of the Great American Desert. Nevertheless, come spring there are frequent periods of storminess which can lead to heavy rainfall. So one night I stepped outside to let the dog out to do his business, when I noticed a familiar figure stuck to the glass of the atrium at the back of the house. Imagine my surprise when I found myself face to face with a frog. And then I heard it - the amphibian chorus in full throat, just beyond the back yard fence.

This is a curious thing. Unlike Florida there aren't miles upon miles of drainage ditches, nor the sheer quantity of water falling from the sky that you experience there. But...the neighbor has a swimming pool. And apparently, that is all the little buggers need to reproduce and flourish. For every night now as I take the pup out for his evening constitutional, the song of frog joy fills the air.

I think we've been followed.

Look At His Mohawk

I think this little guy just got back from World Of Warcraft where he got hit with the Mohawk Grenade.

You don't just luck into things... You build step by step, whether it's friendships or opportunities.

Sorry for the long winded description but these are pretty complicated little people. Scroll to the end if uninterested.

Wikipedia says:

"Meerkat" is a loanword from Afrikaans. The name has a Dutch origin but by misidentification. Dutch meerkat refers to the "guenon", a monkey of the Cercopithecus genus. The word "meerkat" is Dutch for "lake cat", but the suricata is not in the cat family, and neither suricatas nor guenons are attracted to lakes; the word possibly started as a Dutch adaptation of a derivative of Sanskrit markaṭa मर्कट = "monkey", perhaps in Africa via an Indian sailor on board a Dutch East India Company ship. The traders of the Dutch East India Company were likely familiar with monkeys, but the Dutch settlers attached the name to the wrong animal at the Cape. The suricata is called stokstaartje = "little stick-tail" in Dutch.

According to African popular belief (mainly in the Zambian/Zimbabwean region), the meerkat is also known as the sun angel, as it protects villages from the moon devil or the werewolf which is believed to attack stray cattle or lone tribesmen.

Anatomy

Meerkat in San Francisco zoo

The meerkat is a small diurnal herpestid (mongoose) weighing on average about 731 grams (1.61 pounds) for males and 720 grams (1.58 pounds) for females. Its long slender body and limbs give it a body length of 25 to 35 cm (10 to 14 inches) and an added tail length of 17 to 25 cm (7 to 10 inches). Its tail is not bushy like all other mongoose species, but is rather long and thin and tapers to a black or reddish colored pointed tip. The meerkat uses its tail to balance when standing upright. Its face tapers, coming to a point at the nose, which is brown. The eyes always have black patches around them, which help deflect the sun's glare. The meerkat has small black crescent-shaped ears that can close when digging to keep sand out. Like cats, meerkats have binocular vision, a large peripheral range, depth perception, and eyes on the front of their faces.

At the end of each of a meerkat's "fingers" is a non-retractable, strong, 2 cm (0.8 in) long, curved claw used for digging burrows and digging for prey. Claws are also used with muscular hindlegs to help climb the occasional tree. They have four toes on each foot and long slender limbs. The coat is usually fawn-colored peppered with gray, tan, or brown with a silver tint. They have short parallel stripes across their backs, extending from the base of the tail to the shoulders. The patterns of stripes are unique to each meerkat. The underside of the meerkat has no markings but the belly has a patch which is only sparsely covered with hair and shows the black skin underneath. The meerkat uses this area to absorb heat while standing on its rear legs, usually early in the morning after cold desert nights.

Diet and foraging behaviour

Meerkats showing foraging behavior at the Adelaide Zoo.

Meerkats are primarily insectivores, but also eat lizards, snakes, scorpions, spiders, plants, eggs, small mammals, millipedes, centipedes and, more rarely, small birds. They are partially immune to certain venoms; they are immune to the very strong venom of the scorpions of the Kalahari Desert, unlike humans.[2] They have no excess body fat stores, so foraging for food is a daily need.

Meerkats forage in a group with one "sentry" on guard watching for predators while the others search for food. Sentry duty is usually approximately an hour long. Baby meerkats do not start foraging for food until they are about 1 month old, and do so by following an older member of the group who acts as the pup's tutor.[3] The meerkat standing guard makes peeping sounds when all is well. If the meerkat spots danger, it barks loudly or whistles.

Reproduction

A meerkat in the Kalahari Desert

Meerkats become sexually mature at about one year of age and can have 1 to 5 pups in a litter, with 3 pups being the most common litter size. Wild meerkats may have up to four litters per year. Meerkats are iteroparous and can reproduce any time of the year but most births occur in the warmer seasons. The pups are allowed to leave the burrow at three weeks old. When the pups are ready to emerge from the burrow, the whole clan of meerkats will stand around the burrow to watch. Some of the adolescents might try to show off so they can have more attention than the pups.

There is no precopulatory display; the male ritually grooms the female until she submits to him and copulation begins, the male generally adopting a seated position during the act. Gestation lasts approximately 11 weeks and the young are born within the underground burrow and are altricial. The young's ears open at about 15 days of age, and their eyes at 10–14 days. They are weaned around 49 to 63 days. They do not come above ground until at least 21 days of age and stay with babysitters near the burrow. After another week or so, they join the adults on a foraging party.

Usually, the alpha pair reserves the right to mate and normally kills any young not its own, to ensure that its offspring has the best chance of survival. The dominant couple may also evict, or kick out the mothers of the offending offspring.

New meerkat groups are often formed by evicted females pairing with roving males.

If the members of the alpha group are relatives (this tends to happen when the alpha female dies and is succeeded by a daughter), they do not mate with each other and reproduction is by group females stray-mating with roving males from other groups; in this situation, pregnant females tend to kill and eat any pups born to other females.

Behavior

Meerkat standing on rear legs

At Auckland Zoo

Meerkats are small burrowing animals, living in large underground networks with multiple entrances which they leave only during the day. They are very social, living in colonies averaging 20–30 members. Animals in the same group regularly groom each other to strengthen social bonds. The alpha pair often scent-mark subordinates of the group to express their authority, and this is usually followed by the subordinates grooming the alphas and licking their faces. This behavior is also usually practiced when group members are reunited after a short period apart. Most meerkats in a group are all siblings or offspring of the alpha pair.

Meerkats demonstrate altruistic behavior within their colonies; one or more meerkats stand sentry (lookout) while others are foraging or playing, to warn them of approaching dangers. When a predator is spotted, the meerkat performing as sentry gives a warning bark, and other members of the gang will run and hide in one of the many bolt holes they have spread across their territory. The sentry meerkat is the first to reappear from the burrow and search for predators, constantly barking to keep the others underground. If there is no threat, the sentry meerkat stops signaling and the others feel safe to emerge.

Meerkats also babysit the young in the group. Females that have never produced offspring of their own often lactate to feed the alpha pair's young, while the alpha female is away with the rest of the group. They also protect the young from threats, often endangering their own lives. On warning of danger, the babysitter takes the young underground to safety and is prepared to defend them if the danger follows. If retreating underground is not possible, she collects all young together and lies on top of them.

Meerkats are also known to share their burrow with the Yellow Mongoose and ground squirrel, species with which they do not compete for resources. If they are unlucky, sometimes they share their burrow with snakes.

Like most species, meerkat young learn by observing and mimicking adult behaviour though adults also engage in active instruction. For example, meerkat adults teach their pups how to eat a venomous scorpion: they will remove the stinger and help the pup learn how to handle the creature.[4]

Despite this altruistic behaviour, meerkats sometimes kill young members of their group. Subordinate meerkats have been seen killing the offspring of more senior members in order to improve their own offspring's position.[5]

Meerkats have been known to engage in social activities, including what appear to be wrestling matches and foot races.

Vocalization

It has recently[clarification needed] been noted that meerkat calls may carry specific meanings, with specific calls indicating the approach of snakes, birds of prey, or other predators.[citation needed] How these calls work is not yet clear.

Meerkat groups

Group at Zoo Basel

A meerkat group may die out because of predator attack, its alpha pair being unable to breed, starvation in a year when the rains fail, or epidemic disease.

A new meerkat group often arises from evicted females meeting and staying with roving males, looking for chances to mate. The litter size is usually 2–5 pups.

The size of the groups is variable. A group which becomes over-large may routinely have to disperse widely to find enough food when foraging. As a result, when suddenly needing to run for shelter, members of the group may choose different holes, resulting in the group fissioning.

(Quality is of this set is not great but my soul is there ! Photos taken with a small ixus and now, equiped with a much better Lumix, so hoping to get better results in Cuba where I'm heading in a few days).

(Morocco, village in the mountains one hour from Larache, Nov. 07)… In my favourite café in the Rif mountains, time passes slowly even the days of the weekly market. Only men present, some spending long hours, smoking kif and/or playing to win a glass of mint tea (or more). They accepted my presence, a foreign woman and most did not mind being taken in photos ; only coming back did I realise that some were hiding behind the hood of their djellabas ; nobody objected though and I was feeling most welcome !

Later, I was invited by one of the young guys for "a simple meal" : I thought that it would be an affair of 1 or 2 hours but this took the whole afternoon as all the relatives living nearby and a bit farther had to get there and greet me in the large house before I was allowed to leave, ! covered with some beautiful jewellery that I could not refuse despite my protests (so embarrassing !)

This is the hospitality of Morocco in the remote countryside - irresistible !!!

This village café was a source of wonders for me, not only for the friendly people who were sitting there but also for the inside architecture : it used to be a government office during the Spanish rule, I was told. Basically, this largish café is divided in 2 with an entrance in the middle, dividing again the room in 4 sections, but there are many such communicating openings in the walls ; here you see the section on the left.

Second Life holiday parties was an incredible mix of trance, dnb, electronica, dark psy, goa, minimal, proggy, acid, experimental, industrial, noize, tribal, jazz, live music, country, blues, reggae, salsa, classical, opera, and Christmas music. I heard it all and then some.

I love music of all kinds. If it's good, it's worth listening to, so don't start with the nose-up-in-the-air over your favorite genre. Believe me... good music will always find an audience. An audience of sophisticated listeners will stop to listen to any good sound... even if it isn't part of your normal repertoire.

What is amazing is that dj's and musicians around the world know this, and they borrow from all genres to create their own personal sounds.

Here in Second Life, we get the results from around the world. World music mixes with the trendy sounds of the day, and we get the sounds that we love so much.

I want to thank all the dj's, musicians, club owners and event makers in SL. You guys made a holiday scene like no other. APPLAUSE & BRAVO ::::

www.martberg-pommern.de/index.php/english.html

Nearly 200 m above the Mosel river next to Pommern and Karden lays the high plateau of the Martberg. Its name still reminds you of the celtic-roman god Lenus-Mars who has been worshipped here in ancient times.

In the celtic period, around 100 BC, the Martberg was a central town an oppidum of the local celtic tribe called Treveri. According to current research the plateau of 45 ha was densly settled with small houses made of wood and clay. The settlement was surrounded by a wall constructed out of timber and stones. The evidence of coinage, handicraft and many imported goods emphasize the importance of the settlement in these times.

In the central area of the mountain archaeologists found a sanctuary of several celtic-roman temples which date from the 1st century BC to the 4th century AD. The sanctuary was surrounded by a large rectangular collonade which has been 60 to 70 m. In the center stood the main temple built in the typical celtic-roman style. It had a central square building called cella and a surrounding roofed verandah with stone pillars. The cella was the most important part of the temple because there was the god’s statue placed. Next to the central temple four smaller temples were discovered built in the same way as the main temple. In the sanctuary archaeologists found large quantities of offerings. The believers offered more than 10.000 coins, hundreds of fibulas, weapons as well as thousands of miniature ceramic vessels to their gods. In the course of the christianisation the sanctuary was abandoned after 400 AD. The religious center moved from the Martberg to Karden where an early christian community was established.

Since the year of 2006 AD it is possible to visit the celtic-roman sanctuary again. The major temple with its impressive wall paintings and one minor temple are reconstructed completely. Two other temples and the surrounding wall are rebuilt partly. Furthermore you can see some houses built in the way of the celtic period. Many of the objects from the Martberg and 2000 years of the history of Karden can be seen in the Stiftsmuseum of Treis-Karden. The museum is located next to the church of Karden.
