I've been away for what seems like forever. I have had a rough couple of weeks since I've been home. It feels like after 3 years that lasted a lifetime, in the blink of an eye... everything changed. My future has been completely altered - at least that is how it feels as of now. The world dropped and my footing was lost. I suppose there is nothing else to do now, but pick myself up and start over. No, I think it's more like Starting New. It's time for me to move on, to find something else, to work on myself, and really focus on this new blank page of tomorrow. Wish me well, lads and lasses.
In the meantime, I've been doing a lot of commercial work. I've been asked to shoot 7-8 year olds All Stars Baseball. I'm also doing some weekend shoots of Motocross, which I have to say - I like a lot more. Aaaand I may be doing a wedding in mid-July. That I am super excited for, but nervous nonetheless. I've shot one other wedding, but it was for a close friend. This couple I have only just met. Still, I'm excited to see that things are looking up.
I haven't decided whether or not I want to upload any of my commercial work yet or not. Part of me wants this to be more of a personal journal of growth. One that reflects my growth in photography and growth in myself. Sooo, I'm not quite sure yet.
XOXO

"Avery Island’s most spectacular feature was developed by the late Edward Avery McIlhenny, known as "Monsieur Ned" by his French speaking friends and associates. Much of the world knows about TABASCO® Pepper Sauce, made for over 125 years on Avery Island, Louisiana. Not as many people know that Avery Island is actually a salt dome that extends some eight miles beneath the earth's surface. Or that the protruding "island" part of the formation is home to the world's most beautiful sanctuaries for the preservation and study of flora and fauna.
It was on Avery Island, where salt and pepper meet, that Edward McIlhenny helped save the snowy egret from extinction. In 1895 when the bird was being hunted for its plummage, McIlhenny built an aviary on Avery Island and captured and raised eight wild egrets. After they had raised their hatches and were ready to migrate, McIlhenny freed them. The egrets returned the next spring and every spring since. The egrets and herons return by the thousands to the rookery now called "Bird City". Not surprisingly, Jungle Gardens is a birder's paradise, home to hundreds of species of resident and migratory birds.
McIlhenny did much more to ensure that feature generations had an ideal spot to enjoy and study the beauties of nature and to observe plants and flowers from around the world in his 200 acre Jungle Gardens. The gardens are home to a large collection of camellias. Thousands of plants represent some 600 varieties, including imports from Japan and France, as well as varieties that McIlhenny developed on Avery Island. You will see acres upon acres of bright azalea flowers that carpet the landscape in the spring. Massive live oak trees are prevalent throughout the gardens, along with brilliant wildflowers and groves of evergreens. The Chinese Garden contains a Buddha sculpture dating back to 1000 A.D."

Pour voir en diaporama les séries "A tous les 100 pas/ "...
Concept original de DIdier Bonaventure qui nous ouvre la voie :
la série A tous les 100 pas de Didier Bonaventure
....
In every 100 steps ? It is a kind of advance, a course, a ballade. It is, while leaving at home, 100 steps after 100 steps (that is to say in all 2400 step and thus 24 sights) photographs of what was in front of me.
So, every day, during 24 days, on Flickr, on the same place and at the same hour, the picture of previous the day is replaced by a new image.
To keep the track of the past images, they are placed in a message under the image which changes. It is thus necessary to reserve 24 successive places from the dépos of the first image.
This choice of presentation has the effect of showing the messages of the visitors and their comment on the image which was, for them, that of day.
...

Here is a frame from an older tv commercial that we worked on for ABN Amro. The only reason I am uploading it here is because flickr allows me to link to it from the CMS that I am using to run the website and its convenient to have it all located on flickr.
This was shot on DV with 35mm lens adaptors and a set of Arri primes. When I pull out old footage, I wished they were shot at a higher resolution.
Addiction 5. My Baby!
Miniman is my baby. She is the tiny baby kitten I adopted 5 months ago from the streets.
She was maybe 1 week old and I was supposed to keep her just for the night... Then for the weekend, and the rest you know!
People keep telling me she's either ugly or "different". She's got a tiny head and she has no defined colour, but I don't care, she's my baby and I love her very much.
I think she arrived in my life at the best time and made me very happy during hard times. I love her.
Her official name is Miniman (my mom's cat is called Michoman and she is a smaller version of him, so... yeah, I'm silly!), but we calll her Mina most of the time. Her necklace says MINI <3 and she's got about 10 more nicknames.
Can one be addicted to a cat? I am!
This was like the hardest picture to take! She kept moving and fighting her way away from my arms haha... I love her!! Have I said that too many times?!

About the shot
Possibly my best shot to date, technically-speaking. Only needed to crop and sharpen very slightly. I'm very pleased that I seem to be improving rather than remaining static. Now if only I could produce these kinds of results every time, but I imagine this is the way for many of us photographers!

About the Diana Monkey
The Diana Monkey ranges from 40 to 55 cm in length, excluding its tail, which is of a uniform 3–4 cm diameter and 50–75 cm long. Adults weigh between 4–7 kg. Individual Diana Monkeys may live for up to 20 years. They are generally black or dark grey, but have a white throat, crescent-shaped browband, ruff and beard; the browband gave the species its common name, since it was held to resemble the bow of the goddess Diana. The species is regarded as endangered by the IUCN as well as by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, the chief dangers to them being habitat destruction (they are now virtually confined to coastal areas) and hunting for bushmeat.
The Diana Monkey is a noisy presence in the forest. Its marked coloration allows a wide range of visual social signals, and it also has a wide range of alarm calls, with different sounds for different predators. The monkey has distinctive alarm calls for different kinds of predators, and recent research has shown that other forest residents such as the Yellow-casqued Hornbill are able to discriminate these and take appropriate action.

I got a Lumix LX5 for a backup pocket camera. This is one of my first shots. Originally JPEG in the largest size, using aperture priority mode with f/3.2, ISO80, 1/80 second and at 9.2mm in macro mode (whatever that 9.2m means...).
The important (and interesting) thing about this is that it was blazing wind out there and I used the auto focus lock to get this shot. I actually used a bracket of 3 shots to create an HDR! It works but it is not nice. With auto focus lock on, the pictures are individually sharp but the movement of the flower creates a triple image on the HDR. It is interesting how this works!
This camera also work in RAW and I have taken several pix in RAW but this happened to be lovely in JPEG. This is a crop and I used Lightroom 3 to give it a punch, a bit of light in the background, and a bit of sharpness. Whatever noise there is I left so you can see the noise level in JPEG mode. It pretty darn good!
The camera also has a burst mode in which you can take like 10 shots in quick succession but its writing speed is slow enough to only allow that in smaller sized JPEG.
On this camera you can also choose the aspect ratio of your pictures: 1:1, 4:3, 3:2, and 16:9. This picture was in the 16:9 ratio before the crop. I really appreciate the DOF with this little point-and-shoot! Significantly nicer than other P&S cameras I have ever tried! It also feels much more solid--I purchased the white one and some reviews commented on that the white feels like a top camera... nah.. it is solid!
Fun camera with a super Leica lens on it! I will definitely going to purchase the eye piece--I hate to take pix composing onthe LCD panel. =)
PS: adding info as I am learning the system. This camera has a feature I have never seen or heard of before: live histogram BEFORE you take the picture... amazing! It shows you the histogram so you can tell whether you need to change your metering point or if you need to change your setting. I was so shocked when I saw that!
It is full of surprises! I find it a bit noisy and when I take triple images bracketed for HDR, the noise triples as well... so call those artsy shots... Another thing I found is that while the camera has many modes (moody shot colors, including retro, black and white, dynamic, etc.), Lightroom changed all of the black and whites into color upon uploading (in RAW)... I will test now the software that the camera came with to see if that too changes the colors.. then we have a camera problem, else we have a Lightroom-camera non-recognition problem. I will also test the RAW in Photoshop's developer to see if the colors have converted from black and white to color... Interesting finds.
