I have been experimenting a fair bit with new photo processing techniques, and here is the fruit of another effort.
The Shot
For those of you who don't know me, this is me :o) My wife actually shot this photo. I was trying to hide from the photo and trying to look exasperated at the same time...
In Aperture, i created a version with +2ev exposure. This nicely brightened my palm, effectively erasing out my many prints...
The Photo
As i mentioned previously, i did a fair bit of experimenting with this photo. First of was the inclusion of a texture (you will have to strain to see it, but it is there...). I used the Speckles 1 texture provided by the very talented borealnz (thanks very much!). I merged the texture with some references from this website.
Beyond that, i completed the processing with some standard tuning (brightness, contrast, hues etc...)

In every 100 steps ? It is a kind of advance, a course, a ballade. It is, while leaving at home, 100 steps after 100 steps (that is to say in all 2400 step and thus 24 sights) photographs of what was in front of me.
So, every day, during 24 days, on Flickr, on the same place and at the same hour, the picture of previous the day is replaced by a new image.
To keep the track of the past images, they are placed in a message under the image which changes. It is thus necessary to reserve 24 successive places from the dépos of the first image.
This choice of presentation has the effect of showing the messages of the visitors and their comment on the image which was, for them, that of day.

À tous les 100 pas ? C'est une sorte de cheminement, un parcours, une ballade. C'est, en sortant de chez moi, 100 pas après 100 pas (soit en tout 2400 pas) 24 photos de ce qui était devant moi.
Au-delà de cette ballade donc, à tous les jours, même heure (14H), et ce pendant 24 jours, j'écrase la photo de la veille, pour la remplacer par une nouvelle de cette série. Aussi, pour garder la trace des images substituées, je les place au fur et à mesure dans un message sous l'image qui change (ceci explique pourquoi j'ai réservé 24 espaces). Notamment, ce choix de présentation a pour effet, comme pour une seule image, de montrer les messages des visiteurs venus voir et commenter l'image qui fut, pour eux, celle du jour.
Dire, montrer, faire les choses autrement, être soi ― donc différent ― c'est forcément prendre le risque de ne pas se faire comprendre, n'est-ce pas ?

what ONE year can do to friendships ONE year alone ive lost the closest of friends but ive also made new friends today is exactly one year from THAT day it was a great day i thought i had picked the RIGHT person buuut turns out i didnt
i dont regret what i said what i DO regret i saying it to that person. i thought that that person would be able to keep things to themselves turns out i was wrong. i dont think they had any right to do EVERYTHING they did. im sounding soo meh meh meh cry cry cry blah but yea everything anyones ever told me ive kept to myself everything because well...they trusted me with their secret so why should i go and tell someone else REGARDLESS of how close i am with someone else they relieve on you and expect you to keep things to yourself idk just what i think. im done with that little rant thing.
that picture, in the bubble, is from when we were still 'cool' with each other now theres like tension and w.e its ok i guess & i blurred it out because idk if i really want to keep that memory or if i want to try and forget about it completly
today today went to the library got a warhol book & HEROES season 1 :DDD soo yea then beat up this one girl haha :] fun times with them headbutts :]]] oh and of course SYTYCD with Sonya! :]]
This free-flying Night heron can be found at the sea lion enclosure at feeding time each day. It was very confiding, allowing me to get close. Even after feeding time was long after, after I had wandered around the zoo and returned to the enclosure on my way out, the heron was still perched there, head tucked in its feathers as the temperature dropped. Stunning bird.

An update on zoo-derived Night Herons. Thanks to Jo Elliot, Animal Records
Keeper at the zoo and formerly Senior Keeper of the Bird Section, we now have
better info on what may be only two remaining birds. In summary:
Bird 1 - single vertically-split band half blue half yellow, seen April 09 to
date (at least); this is a "new style" band, probably numbered, used on birds
hatched 1989 to 1993 [a small possibility this bird is one ringed from 1997 to
2004, when sequences used were not recorded so carefully]; if caught numbers may
be readable, and thereby pin down hatch year.
Bird 2 - red over blue left (blue appears green in photos), red right to 2006
but missing subsequently, bird seen to date; this individual seems to have old
style bands used from 1983 to 1987 (possibly 1988?); again if caught it may be
possible to confirm lack of numbers and also check for transponder fitted to
(some?) birds in that period, thus confirm year.
Alan's 2006 photos were key to this identification, since careful comparison
with more recent images (thanks also to Bruce) suggests it is the same bird, it
just dropped a colour band btwn 2006 and 2008 (and they are not closed bands,
just a wrap round plastic ring like off a ring-binder, so they could easily be
lost).
In addition, the zoo inform us that a bird with metal ring and red right,
red-lime-blue left, ringed (and transpondered) in 1983 was definitely still at
the zoo in 2000.
In summary, it is likely that the current ages of remaining two are 16 and 23
yrs respectively, and the metal-ringed bird was 17 yrs old in 2000, but without
catching the former two are strictly unconfirmed. The current published
longevity records I can trace are 16 yrs in Europe and 21 yrs for N American
race (hoactli), the zoo birds are of course the latter.
Zoo not sure if they will try to catch birds, though it does not look to
difficult a job to me given their regular occurrence (apparently routine at
sealion feeding 11:15hrs) and if there are any volunteers (ringers?) for such I
would happily pass on!
Finally, it is remarkable that these birds are probably out of the zoo in the
local area for most of the time yet are hardly ever reported (Mike's sighting
last New Year's Eve excepted, the only other adult in Lothian since 2001 was the
bird at Bavelaw in Feb 2007, with a juv in Haddington in 2002 per BirdGuides
only). Anecdotal info per zoo staff is that their birds "winter on the Water of
Leith", also a report of one "seen regularly in Haddington", but these are
unconfirmed and undated. Thus all further records of Night Herons in or out of
the zoo, preferably with colour band details, would be most welcome!

Minutos depués de les 19.30 hores, saltaben sobre l'escenariu Adizión Etílika, con una amuesa del so hardcore más combativu dende L.lena nun conciertu entregáu ente una sala mui enllena.
Nesi intre, y depués del últimu tema d'Adizión Etílika, un compañeru de Fai! garraba la palabra y facía una esbilla de les consecuencies de l'aprobación futurible de la Ordenanza de "Convivencia Ciudadana" pa skaters, artistes de cai, pa la llibertá d'espresión de la xente alternativo, pa les prostitutes y la xente probe, y pa tola mocedá n'especial. This negative was scanned using two different methods. "on the road - 1" one starts with just laying the negative down on the flatbed scanner with no light shining through at all. The scratches, fingerprints, and surface wear are very evident (to me, they are like the sound of an old 78rpm record, the scratches and mic quality defines the context).

Some weeks later, I discovered that (though I don't have a negative holder for this size film) I can lay the negative in a sweet spot on my scanner flatbed, configure for color negative scan, and reveal this almost prisitne (though not full width) image.
I'm fond of both versions... vive la difference!
Last Tuesday I visited the nursery at my local park for the first time this year.
They were preparing the gardens for the 2010 season and in the heated houses I found this beautiful Orchid that was just begging to be photographed.
Orchidaceae are well known for the many structural variations in their flowers.
Some orchids have single flowers but most have a racemose inflorescence, sometimes with a large number of flowers. The flowering stem can be basal, that is produced from the base of the tuber, like in Cymbidium, apical, meaning it grows from the apex of the main stem, like in Cattleya, or axillary, from the leaf axil, as in Vanda.
As an apomorphy of the clade, orchid flowers are primitively zygomorphic (bilaterally symmetrical), although in some genera like Mormodes, Ludisia, Macodes this kind of symmetry may be difficult to notice.
The orchid flower, like most flowers of monocots has two whorls of sterile elements. The outer whorl has three sepals and the inner whorl has three petals. The sepals are usually very similar to the petals (and thus called tepals,), but may be completely distinct.
The upper medial petal, called the labellum or lip,, is always modified and enlarged. The inferior ovary or the pedicel usually rotates 180 degrees, so that the labellum, goes on the lower part of the flower, thus becoming suitable to form a platform for pollinators. This characteristic, called resupination occurs primitively in the family and is considered apomorphic (the torsion of the ovary is very evident from the picture). Some orchids have secondarily lost this resupination, e. g. Zygopetalum and Epidendrum secundum.
The normal form of the sepals can be found in Cattleya, where they form a triangle. In Paphiopedilum (Venus slippers) the lower two sepals are fused together into a synsepal, while the lip has taken the form of a slipper. In Masdevallia all the sepals are fused.

They're still on the tree, but we've cooled-down a lot.
This shows a honey bee with bee pollen on her legs. Hair on her legs helps collect the pollen while the honey bee moves about in the bloom. Notice the striping on her tail. The Italian breed of honey bees tend to be more yellow or "gold" and the German breed tend to be more black with little to no yellow banding. The Italian breed are also known for their gentleness where as the German breed are more aggressive. Both are common here in the United States.

From the first annual Fashion Trashion show put on by the Studio Art program at University of Minnesota, Morris. The students in the beginning art classes designed and constructed outfits out of trash and recycled materials, and then put on a full runway show with judges, jokes, and way too much fun. They had an enormous SRO turnout - far larger than anyone expected. It was a great end to the day of the Undergraduate Research Symposium day - a wonderful dessert at the end of a rich and varied meal.
Jess Larson asked me to take photos at the event, and in the end I took well over 1,000 photos. I've sifted out the obviously broken ones, and then divided what's left into two groups: the "top tier" (the ones that I thought were better for some mysterious reason) and "the rest" (this set).
UMM folks should feel free to use these however they see fit. It would be nice to know when they're being used, however. Thanks.

L'arco di legno, alto quattro metri e mezzo per tre metri di base, collocato nella cappella di sinistra della chiesa barocca , è l’eco di altri archi retrostanti, in muratura e dipinti, di un’architettura che richiama in piccolo la soluzione delle cappelle laterali della chiesa del Carmine di Filippo Juvarra a Torino. Arco, dunque, come eco di echi, ma contemporaneamente arco come ascolto, per via della sua forma che richiama il padiglione dell’orecchio. Ascolto come attesa, anzi, presentimento. Giorgio de Chirico dipinge l’arco dandogli un significato di presentimento, citando al proposito il pensiero del filosofo Otto Weininger. L’arco come simbolo di incompletezza, come metafora della vicenda umana che trova nel nostro caso compimento nel Cristo, non a caso posto al di sotto dell’arco come altra e definitiva chiave di volta a chiusura di un cerchio ideale. L’arco di cui parliamo è nella fattispecie un portale di legno tinto di bianco. Il portale, la porta in genere, è realtà terza, separatoria fra due spazi, che possono essere il mondo dell’ Immanenza e il mondo della Trascendenza oppure l’Avanti Cristo e il Dopo Cristo: ciò è ancora confermato dal fatto che alla base del portale sta la statua del Bambino Gesù. Teniamo infine presente che l’arco è un tema ricorrente nell’iconografia della Natività, in genere come rudere di un palazzo, che rappresenta il mondo antico in dissoluzione.[...] "
