This is a stitched panorama of the view across one of the fingers of Lake Shasta. It was a beautiful sight as the sun was trying to break through some moody skies. We were coming back from a tour through the Shasta Caverns. The Shasta Caverns consist of a huge limestone and marble cave which has a number of large chambers full of stalactite and stalagmite formations studded with crystal. Although our recent rains made the amount of dripping and standing water in the caves a bit uncomfortable, it did not dampen the sheer beauty of the many formations which grow at an approximate rate of 1 inch every 100 years!

The reflection of the Castelo de Almourol at the end a clear Autunm day. The history of this castle (built on a small island) goes back to roman times but it was here that the in the 12th century the Grand Master of the Temple Order rebuilt it as one of the defense castles for the battles with the Moors - in its towers we can still the " templar sign" (this is actually known for being a "Templar region") and its associated to a series of castles and convents; it was inhabited until 1600, today is a National Monument. All the towers still stand (even if it suffered from the great earthquake of the 18th century) and the water which separates the castle from land (once for defense now so lovely to see) ...all that is really a wonderful sight. Enjoy!

The nebula Messier 78 is a reflection nebula in the constellation Orion. It was discovered by Pierre Méchain in 1780 and included by Charles Messier in his catalog of comet-like objects that same year.
M78 is the brightest diffuse reflection nebula of a group of nebulae that include NGC 2064, NGC 2067 and NGC 2071. This group belongs to the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex and is about 1,600 light years distant from Earth. M78 is easily found in small telescopes as a hazy patch and involves two stars of 10th magnitude. These two stars, HD 38563A and HD 38563B, are responsible for making the cloud of dust in M78 visible by reflecting their light.

It has been a very long day for me today. I'm pretty mentally exhausted, don't really have time to think about what to post for the day so I just dug up this simple leaf capture from my archives, one for my red and green "state of mind". It's not really a very old photo, not even two weeks old. No verses coming out of my brain tonight. Instead, here's a favorite song from Sarah Mclachlan (hope you'll take the time to listen), ANSWER. Link will open in a new window.
This is a strange sunset phenomena I see once in awhile. The rays such as these here are actually not in the west but are in the east as the sun goes down. They appear to be related to shadows cast by clouds based on this image, but if anyone knows what this effect is called or can explain why it does this-- please do. Edit: and flickr comes through, I knew I could count on the hive mind to find the term! Thanks goes to algo, larigan, and ER Post for finding these are anti-crepuscular rays, fascinating!
Note:the rays were not added in photoshop, I emphasized them here with a blend of hdr and non-hdr layers to create the final result. A total of two hdr images composed from 8 exposures 1 ev apart and two original frames were used to create the final result that best shows off the rays in the east to my tastes.
Quante gocce di rugiada intorno a me,
cerco il sole ma non c'è…
Dorme ancora la campagna, forse no,
è sveglia, mi guarda, non so.
sale adagio verso me.
Quanto verde tutto intorno a ancor piú in là,
fuggito…
intorno irrepetibili colori e silenzi
e foglie cadute e cadute
e nubi bige a rimpiettino
e il mio rabbrividire...
ia giacca stretta al petto...
un sapore di uva...
e dita attaccatticca...
e il giorno
come vai bello
come sempre possente:
Come sempre....
