Shot it at Kumbha Mela 2010.Its a greatest show on Earth.
In Hindu mythology, its origin is found in one of the popular creation myths and the Hindu theories on evolution, the Samudra manthan episode (Churning of the ocean of milk), which finds mention in the Bhagavata Purana, Vishnu Purana, the Mahabharata, and the Ramayana.
The Gods had lost their strength, and to regain it, they thought of churning the Ksheera Sagara (primordial ocean of milk) for amrit (the nectar of immortality), this required them to make a temporary agreement with their arch enemies, the demons or Asuras, to work together with a promise of sharing the nectar equally thereafter. However, when the Kumbha (urn) containing the amrita appeared, a fight ensued. For twelve days and twelve nights (equivalent to twelve human years) the gods and demons fought in the sky for the pot of amrita. It is believed that during the battle, Lord Vishnu flew away with the Kumbha of elixir, and that is when drops of amrita fell at four places on earth: Prayag, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik, and that is where the Kumbh Mela is observed every twelve years.
First written evidence of the Kumbha Mela can be found in the accounts of Chinese traveller, Huan Tsang or Xuanzang (602 - 664 A.D.) who visited India in 629 -645 CE, during the reign of King Harshavardhana.

i know i just finished (belatedly) my 52 weeks, but i kind of miss uploading a lot.. so (as i do sometimes), i've designed a project for myself. it's called the month of march .
i've been really excited for march to come because of this (yay)
so here it goes
for the next five weeks i don't have one day off from classes or work (besides the weekend) so, i've decided to attempt a project to keep me from falling on my bum with the overload of work.. and to just try it. see if i can. keep me (and hopefully you) entertained for this month.
-in the next 31 days i'm only going to have to upload 20 photographs. i'm just trying to be reasonable here..
-at the very least, 50% of the photographs have to be taken in march (i have tons of old images that i haven't had the chance to get around to sharing)
-4/20 must be black and white
-5/20 must be film
-i'm also going to try to be uploading other mediums of art.. i do a shit-ton of drawing/collage/painting and want to start sharing some of them on here!
well, i'm wishing you all the most wonderful march!
cheers to this new month

September 2012, update
Hi folks. I reprocessed (and replaced) the above shot this week to transfer it to canvas and large prints.
The wide angle lenses I use (back in 2011 I used the Sigma 10-20 on DX, now the Sigma 12-24 on FX) give quite some distortion, especially in the far corners. It's not always easy to get rid of it.
This time I went through the whole process again to correct the Ferry House, and bring it back to its true proportions.
Why am I doing this? Well, because I have my first exhibition Saturday, September 29. Where? Over here in this old Ferry house itself! :) Due to the 350th anniversary of the Hoge Brug in Overschie there's all kinds of festivities. One of them is the Ferry House opening its doors in the afternoon. The owner asked me to show my Overschie photo work over here, and I gladly agreed.
Info: www.museumoudoverschie.nl/nl/main/agenda/350-jaar-hoge-br...
Everybody's welcome of course to meet and greet and you can win a nifty canvas too. At the end of the day I'm selling my large prints (50x75 and 30x45) at special prices.
I'll keep you posted. I'm busy with processing, flyers, prints and marketing the whole thing, so I'll be on and off. Ta!
November 2011, nice story...
The Ferry House (Veerhuis) which I regularly shoot in Overschie was sold to a new owner.
I got contacted by him recently, and was asked if I could deliver a blow-up of one of my recent shots he loved (see below), to put it on the wall of his new home. Of course I gladly accepted the assignment! Yesterday I brought a huge canvas of the image (see below) to the Ferry house (wasn't easy, it's located on an impossible spot!) which is heavily renovated at the mo'.
I got a 'guided tour' through the house (from 1747) and I found out that Anton Pieck had lived here, which was news to me. There was a huge stone in the living room wall saying "Anton Pieck, November 1982". You can find Anton Pieck's take on the Ferry house and church over here. It's really nice (from 1948). A very nice experience all-round! Thx Joost, succes with the renovation!

It is a medieval village that arose in the twelfth century as a result of religious fervor that was deployed at the time. He built chapels, shrines and churches. .
In the lower level, about 40 meters above the valley buildings line the single street of the population retains towers and fortified gates.
At the second level, about 60 meters high, and semi-staged rock-cut shrines rise seven and the basilica church. They are accessed by the famous staircase of over 200 steps, but you can also use an elevator.
On the top floor of the cliff stands a castle built in the nineteenth century on the ruins of a medieval XIV century. Currently only accessible to the lookout over the canyon.

"AS IT IS TOLD IN THE STARS…"
Like so many days before, the princess and her beloved guardian wolf went exploring. It should be told here that the bond she and the wolf have is a mystery for all. When the wolf was just 5 years old, a peculiar old lady, gifted the wolf to the family of the princess upon her birth and since then the wolf never left the princess’ side. He slept at her crib, watched over her as she played; she was never out of his sight.
As she grew older, they began to explore the lands together. This is something they loved to do. The wolf allowed her to ride on his back since he was very large and very strong.
During the nights the princess would lay cuddled against the wolf longing to have him forever.
On this particular night, which happened to be night of the princess’ 18th birthday, the princess lay with her wolf, as they have done since she was a child. The sound of thunder suddenly startled the wolf awake. Worried and protective as he always was he stood over his beloved princess. Nothing more happened and she caressed his fur to calm him and make him sleep again.
While exploring the next day in the mountains the wolf and princess came upon a small, strange, sparkling creature. Being his usual protective self the wolf growled at it. Worried that it might try to harm his precious princess. The princess stroked his fur softly, leaned to his ear, and whispered “Shhhhh, my wolf, it is just a fairy.” This did not calm him since he did not trust this creature one bit. He growled at her even more as the fairy smacked him on the nose with her sparkling stick. At that very moment the wolf felt a strange sensation, his mind began to spin. The fairy flew off quickly, giggling until she was out of sight. He looked up and whimpered at the princess, wanting a kiss on his nose in return for making the fairy go away. She leaned down and kissed him as she did so many times. This time he felt the kiss was different, it warmed his heart and soul as always but this time it also gave him a feeling as if there were butterflies in his tummy.
They wandered back into the village, returning home at dusk. The princess fed the wolf and they climbed into bed together. He licked her on the nose and rolled on his side so she could cuddle up to him. That night the wolf had strange dreams. He dreamt he was a human and not a wolf. The wolf was finally able to talk with her, to hold her, to kiss her, to do things he saw so many lovers do and only wished he could.
He woke from this nightmare and gasped. Looking down at his paws, he saw human hands. He quickly looked to his body; there was no fur, but instead his naked human skin. He lay back down moving closer to the princess, caressing her soft, silken skin. This sensation gave him tingles throughout his body. He kissed her neck, her cheek and finally her lips softly. The princess opened her eyes quickly, scared of this man next to her, pushing him away, screaming for her wolf to protect her. He placed his hand over her mouth and tried to calm her by saying, “ssshh…..it is I, my princess, your wolf.“
From that day forward the princess had her wolf as a human and as a strong wolf.
For many years they kept it a secret that he was a shape shifter…

View LARGE on Black for a better look at the crew!
I think I got the problems fixed. Be warned - I got a message two days ago that a file was infected and although I ran every malware programme in the world none of them could heal the infection. It started with small error messages but by last night my whole screen was scarlet with error messages about several hundred files. This morning my platform was gone and I just had a black desk top with nothing on it except a message saying that windows had been altered and would no longer run! Fortunately Vista has a repair programme and it found out that this virus which had been rushing around chomping like Pacman had made lots of partitions on the hard disk among other things. I was able to sort that so I could start but then I found half my files were gone including my mailbox! Back to F11 once more to replace the system files and finally I stepped the computer back three days to before the problems started and I got everything back. No sign of problems since then but I am still a bit nervous about it. It might still be lurking for all I know! I am about to change AV programme as I thought this was very poor letting it run rampant through my computer like that. The only thing I lost was a game I have been playing for about a month where I was up to round 1200 - now back to 0 - LOL!! Hey ho - life goes on!

I have been wanting to do a shoot like this for a while. Ever since I saw Simon Filip's stop motion I have been so inspired by it. I love how there was so much detail in his music video and it was all so beautiful.
I set up this shoot by myself. This was the first shoot I have ever done that was well thought out. Usually my photos come to me and I shoot, but this one I thought long and hard about it.
This photo wouldnt look it's best without a little help of some people. I would like to thank my grandmother for allowing me to use her typewriter and flowers, my little sister for letting me use her butterfly (the one on the table in the jar - it is real but dead). I would also like to thank my friend Daniel for letting me use his birdcage at short notice. I appreciate it. And i would also like to thank my mom for driving me and my model to this location and sitting in the 90 degree weather for 2 hours while we shoot. Last but certainly not least, thank you Marlene. I am so glad you like doing shoots with me. You are so beautiful and patient with me and you didnt care that it was hot and the ants were crawling on you. :)

Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex
(from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
The Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex is a large former industrial site in the city of Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It has been inscribed into the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites since December 14, 2001 and is one of the anchor points of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.
[...]
Shaft 12 (seen on my first two images of this Series) became the main supplier of new central coking plant from 1961 with its 192 ovens, which was again designed by Fritz Schupp. After an expansion in the early 1970s, Zollverein placed among the most productive coking plants worldwide with around 1.000 workers and an output of up to 8.600 tons of coke a day on the so-called dark side. The white side of the plant produced side products such as ammonia, raw benzene and raw tar.
[...]
On its 25th session in December 2001, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared both the sites of the shafts 12 and 1/2 and the cokery a World Heritage Site.

I lose control because of you babe
I lose control when you look at me like this
There's something in your eyes that is saying tonight
I'm not a child anymore, life has opened the door
To a new exciting life
I lose control when I'm close to you babe
I lose control don't look at me like this
There's something in your eyes, is this love at first sight
Like a flower that grows, life just wants you to know
All the secrets of life
It's all written down in your lifelines
It's written down inside your heart
You and I just have a dream
To find our love a place, where we can hide away
You and I were just made
To love each other now, forever and a day
CWD321 - Assignment: Numbers
A visual metaphor, obviously. Of course, binary itself is a sort of metaphor, too, for microscopic switches turning on and off, so perhaps it could be a metaphor within a metaphor.
These little zeros and ones could possibly be considered the most important numbers of our current age, yet they are also rapidly becoming so commonplace that Internet access is itself a commodity anymore much like water and gas, and computers are yet another household appliance. Before long, future generations will look back and not be able to even comprehend how society managed without it, much like we view electricity.

Rupit, Barcelona (Spain).
ENGLISH
Rupit and Pruit (in Catalan Rupit i Pruit) are a municipality of the region of Osona located to the northeast of the region and the east of the Sierra de Cabrera. It is integrated by two urban nuclei: Rupit and Pruit, that they were independent until year 1980. It is the last town of the province of Barcelona in the highway that unites the municipalities of Vic, capital of the region of Osona and Olot, capital of the region of the Garrotxa (Girona).
The origin of the town we found in the castle that was constructed around year 1000, replacing the one of Fàbregues, where they went constructing houses around.
In 14th century the population underwent a reduction but it recovered, arriving in 17th and 18th centuries at the maximum splendor that has never had the town. The church was possibly built between 13th and 14th centuries, and it was dedicated to San Miguel Arcángel.
Pruit already names in year 955, when it belonged to viscounts of Osona. Always there is been united to the castle and jurisdiction of Rupit.

From Wikipedia:
St Paul's is built in a revival of the style known as Gothic transitional, being partly Early English and partly Decorated. It was designed by the distinguished English architect William Butterfield, who was noted for his ecclesiastical work. The foundation stone was laid in 1880. Butterfield never saw the site and the building work was frequently delayed by disputes between Butterfield, in England, and the Church authorities on the spot. Butterfield resigned in 1884 and the building was finished by a local architect, Joseph Reed. Consequently the design of the spires differs greatly from those originally planned (similar to those built at Christ Church, South Yarra). The Cathedral Chapter has a scale model of the original completed design.
Mosteiro Santa Maria da Vitória, more commonly known as the Batalha Monastery, is a Dominican monastery in the Portuguese town of Batalha, in the District of Leiria, Portugal. It is one of the best and original examples of Late Gothic architecture in Portugal, intermingled with the Manueline style.
The Batalha Abbey was added in 1983 by the UNESCO to its list of World Heritage sites: whc.unesco.org/en/list/264

To my surprise, and my delight
I saw sunrise, I saw sunlight
I am nothing in the dark
And the clouds burst to show daylight
Ooh and the sun will shine
Yeah on this heart of mine
Ooh and I realise
Who cannot live without
Ooh come apart without
On a hill top, on a sky-rise
Like a first born child
On a full day, and a full flight
Defeat darkness, breaking daylight
Ooh and the sun will shine
Yeah on this heart of mine
Ooh and I realise
Who cannot live without
Ooh come apart without
Daylight
Slowly breaking through the daylight (10x)
Have you ever had someone look at one of your photos and comment "Gee, you must have a really nice camera"?
A friend sent me an email the other day wanting to know if he should spend (a fortune) to buy a laundry list of new camera equipment because he wanted to "take better photos".
In response to that, I wanted to post this shot taken with a $199 "point and shoot" 3-megapixel digital camera. I keep it in my briefcase when I'm traveling on business and can't take my D90.
Would this shot have been better with my Nikon? Sure.... there is some noise in the sky due to using a high ISO on a cheap camera and the optics can't match a $1200 lens.... but the basic image would have been the same.
Becoming a better photographer is about learning to see differently, experimenting, learning, challenging yourself - not about how much equipment you purchase.

"We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation" (Romans 5:3-4, NLT).
Did you know that the way you handle your adversities has a huge impact on your success in life? If you shrink back, choose to get bitter, and lose your enthusiasm, then you are allowing the difficulties of life to bury you. You are allowing hardship to keep you from your God–given destiny. But if you choose to keep pressing forward with a smile on your face, rejoicing even in the hard times, you are allowing God´s character to be developed inside of you. You are setting yourself up for promotion.
Did you know that the only difference between a piece of black coal and a priceless diamond is the amount of pressure that it´s endured? When you stand strong in the midst of the trials and difficulties in life, when you allow God to shape and mold your character, it´s like going from a piece of coal to a priceless diamond. Those difficulties are going to give way to new growth, new potential, new talent, new friendships, new opportunities, new vision. You´re going to see God develop your life in ways that you´ve never even dreamed!

Early morning
Eight o'clock precise
I see the lonely August sun arise
Say you know
You will
Move me like you do
Out on the fields...
I'm waiting the whole night through
Early morning, early morning, yeah
Ran the whole way
Down to the tracks
Through the doorway
Then a last look back
Say you know
You will
Save me like you do
Out on the fields...
I've waited the whole night through
Early morning, early morning, yeah
I climbed all the stairways
To find the rooftop clear
Got the shotgun lying with me here
Say you know
You will
Move me like you do

"Early morning"
Here is a recent image to break up my recent Tahoe photos. I had to go tonight and see the impending storm that is making its way down the Pacific coast. Early this morning we had hail, which is unique since we live right on the beach. I ran up the coast just North of Santa Cruz. The whole way up all I could do was keep my eyes on these crazy sun beams. Seriously the whole ocean was lit up by isolated beams hitting the surface North, South and West of Santa Cruz.
As I ran down the cliff to the beach I watched the beams disappear. I just missed them. I am sure that up North they were going off, but I was already down at the site by that time, and it would take 30 minutes to run up the hill and find another site.
Here is my version of the approaching storm, that is sure to bring a week of power outages, flooding and more snow and hail.

My Most interesting photos for a guy called Isaias
Ko Yao (Thai: เกาะยาว) is a district (Amphoe)
Ko Yao (เกาะยาว), sometimes written Koyao, is a group of islands between Phuket and Krabi. There are two main islands, Ko Yao Noi ("Small Long Island") and Ko Yao Yai, with Noi being the more developed of the two.
Ko Yao Noi remains a beautiful island, where most people still believe that the island should be preserved from human degradation.
Sea Gypsies (Moken people) were inhabiting the Bay before anybody else, except maybe other nomadic people like forest hunters and collectors (Sakai, Negritos). The 3,500 or so inhabitants of Koh Yao Noi are thought to be recent migrants from the Malay Peninsula (Satun, Trang).
The Mon population, linguistically and culturally belonging to the Khmer ethnolinguistic group, did settled in peninsular Thailand since ever, ruling maritime states like the one of Ligor (Nakhon Si Thammarat). They melt continuously with Southern migrants from Malaysia and with Northern rulers (Thai), over centuries of commercial exchanges and political conflicts. Most probably the Mon stock remains prevalent for most of the people living nowadays in Southern Thailand, including people of Koh Yao.
Numerous cave paintings hidden in the many islands of the bay, extending from 2000 years ago to last century, attest the influence of distinct communities in the emergence of a mixed origin population, living now in the provinces of Phang Nga, Phuket, Krabi and Satun.
The most recent migrations (17th-18th century) from Satun and Trang to Ko Yao Yai and Koh Yao Noi is attested by the fact that the particular dialect spoken on the island still bear obvious Malaysian lexical traces, particularely regarding toponyms and vernacular names of the flora species.
The main industries on the island are fishing and rubber planting. A little rice farming and some fruit, palm and coconut plantations are evident. Boat building and farming techniques here have been passed from father to son and, while some of the youngsters leave Ko Yao to seek the bright lights of Phuket, most return to their tight knit community

Dear Flickr friends,
I can't believe it's more than THREE months without any upload from me. I'm concentrating on many different projects, and I am spending less and less time online these days.
I have finally completed the project I was working on since last September.
It evolved substantially by what I had in mind when I first started, and I am definitely happy with it.
You will see the images in the next months; meanwhile I will be uploading these other ones, that have been sitting forgotten on my hard drive for too many months.
Moreover, I have many important announcements which will be made public in these next weeks/months.
Anyway, this image is one of those coming from my (many) studies on trees.
It will not be included in my 'final' series, but I still think it's worth sharing.
It was shot last November, before winter arrived and made all the leaves on this black puplar fall.
p.s. Those who also follow me on Google+ have probably seen this, but I'm sure many here haven't!

A story of conflict from Lands of Classic Castle.
DISCLAIMER: No offense meant to my Loreesi builder friends...but you been talkin’ smack, and it’s time for your smack-down!
Sir Caelan Munro looked out from the shadows at the approaching invaders with a mixture of anger and regret. He did not want to do this, but it was both his duty and was absolutely necessary. The Loreesi army was neither justified nor welcome. Lenfald had sought peace, even as the opening battle began, but driven by a lust for power the Loreesi would not listen. At the Battle of Ainesford, Lenfald had fought the Loreesi’s game out in the open, and had been destroyed by his war elephants and cavalry. Now it was time to fight the Lenfel way, with brains instead of brawn. Today was payback time.
Caelan looked around at his own Scout Snipers, well-hidden in their green-dyed leather armor, with a mixture of pride and concern. He had trained them hard, they had done exceptionally well, and now he was about to put them in harm’s way for the very first time. He had formed them only three months ago along with his wily and highly-capable chief archer, Tavish. The King had just been murdered, and all the evidence pointed to the power-mad Loreesi. Their own prince had declared he could “be king in a fortnight”. Not likely, so long as Lenfald opposed him. And so Lenfald was targeted.
The invading army was forced to use this road, for it bypassed a boggy marsh and skirted a thick forest. That made this road a “choke point”. The forest was now at the Scout Snipers’ backs and would allow a quick escape through hidden paths which the desert-soldiers of Loreos would not easily find.
The lead army elements came and passed by their position, completely unaware of the two dozen Scout Snipers waiting to strike. Then the main target came into range: the first war elephant, all dressed up in flashy Loreesi gold and red trappings. Finery would not save it.
Caelan did not give the order to fire. That would be decided by Flannery, formerly of Lenfald’s logging industry. He knew how to cut a large tree so that it barely stood with just enough trunk left, waiting for the final blows. And Flannery timed it perfect. The moment his enormous axe struck the first hit, every archer, including Caelan, let fly. They had each been tracking a selected target, and Caelan had sought a burly Loreesi marching right by the elephant. Out of the corner of his eye he watched his men strike their targets suddenly out of nowhere, shocking their victims even when they missed, which was rare. Tavish shot a knight right in the neck and the nobleman tumbled backward off his horse. But not Caelan. He shot wide and to the left...archery was never his strong suit.
For the Loreesi, shock and dismay spread as seconds flew by in chaos. That chaos got much worse as Flannery’s second blow brought the great tree down. It came crashing down on the elephant, which tried to avoid it by lumbering to the right, only to crash into another tree and trample several men in the process. Flannery’s tree still nailed it squarely in the back, after crushing two of the four men riding it. The great animal was down, and despite it’s struggling would clearly never rise again. It would also never be used again to crush Lenfels under foot.
Three shots. That was Caelan’s rule, and then mandatory rapid withdrawal into the forest. He hated it; he far preferred a stand-up fight with his longsword and dirk, but with thousands of Loreesi here, it would be suicide. He aimed and took his second shot at one blindly charging their position. And missed. Meanwhile Tavish felled another knight. Caelan’s third shot was at the same man as before and he so close now that the young Lenfel knight could make out his eye color...finally a hit, yet only in the leg!
Caelan quickly glanced around and saw that some of his men were still shooting. “NOW!” he yelled at the top of his lungs and they turned in unison and quietly faded into the paths they had used to arrive. Behind them he could hear the Loreesi charging. They crashed into thickets, vines, and thorny bushes to no avail, their eyes not used to the low-light of the forest. For all their frustration they could find nothing, except Flannery's axe and his message left on his implement of destruction: "You want our trees? Here is how you get them". By the time they stumbled onto anything that looked like a path, the Scout Snipers were already at their horses and mounted, having seen their first action. Not a single Sniper was wounded. Over three dozen of the invaders would not live through the night.
Postscript.
While riding to their next ambush site, Tavish looked at Caelan and stated, “Sir, your archery has not improved in spite of much practice. How is it that a leader of archers is such a bad shot?”
Caelan returned the stare. “How is it your arrows only find noblemen?”
Aware of how sensitive this issue was in their society, Tavish merely grinned, “Only Loreesi knights. They hardly count anyways.”
2nd DISCLAIMER: No real elephants were harmed in the making of the MOC.

Yes, I am fully aware this is technically a Leonard Cohen song. But I've been in love with the Jeff Buckley version for years. It's so hauntingly beautiful, it chokes me up and makes me cry every time I hear it. Have a listen: www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIF4_Sm-rgQ
Well, I accepted that job offer today. I'm not sure whether I'm starting in a week or two weeks, but either way, I'm sad to see my extended summer vacation come to an end. I'm not sad, however, about the fact that I will have income again. My savings have been dwindling. The job is in Michigan, but it's too far for us to stay at the lake house. The commute would be around an hour and forty minutes each way, and I'm just not going to do that. So for the time being, I think we're going to spend week days/nights at my folks' house and weekends out here. At least until we find a place of our own.
I'm sort of excited to get back to work, but more than anything, I'm feeling apprehensive and scared. I was so unhappy at my last two firms, that thinking about going back to work just fills me with dread. I'm hoping this new job will put an end to that sick, uneasy feeling and be exactly what I need to embrace the practice of law again. It will be an entirely different environment from the big firms I've worked for previously, so it's got that going for it. And the attorney I'll be working for seems really cool. It'll be an adventure.
And I'd just like to say how lucky I am to have Andy. I mean, I know that sounds sappy and like it should go without saying, but I am so blessed. Sometimes we take our significant others for granted. But today I realized that I really can tackle anything life throws at me as long as I have him by my side. And that makes me feel so much stronger. Love you, Bird.

Visiting the Central Park in the very early morning was never an option before. Safety concern for one reason, and the difficulty to get up early, obviously, for the other. However, I made it during our trip to New York as I wanted to experience a different Central Park when the light's still on, the air is slightly misty, and the day has yet started!
A walk in the Mall in the early morning is a perfect way to start a busy day for sure!

During our vacation in the Ardennes, we had a great time at this side of the river in the beautiful picturesque city called Durbuy in the Belgium area of the Ardennes. My daughter and I spend quite some time playing and walking in this part of the river, searching nice little polished stones, watching small fishes come by and just enjoy the cold crystal clear water...

Anthurium Lily, one of my favourite exotic blooms.
Anthurium (pronounced /ænˈθjʊəriəm/)[1] (Schott, 1829), is a large genus of about 600- 800 (possibly 1,000) species, belonging to the arum family (Araceae). Anthurium can also be called "Flamingo Flower" or "Boy Flower", both referring to the structure of the spathe and spadix.
TROPICOS lists 1901 types, although some of these are duplicates. It is one of the largest and probably the most complex genus of this family; certainly it is one of the most variable. Many species are undoubtedly not yet described and new ones are being found every year. The species has neotropical distribution; mostly in wet tropical mountain forest of Central America and South America, but some in semi-arid environments. Most species occur in Panama, Colombia, Brazil, the Guiana Shield and Ecuador.

Esplanade des Invalides: a new anti-CPE demonstration on the 23 turned even more violent than the 18. A couple of photographers have been beaten up by provovateurs, a few cameras stolen, and large riots erupted in different places of this huge esplanade. At least 3 cars have been burnt as well as part of a building.
Here, a fireman is trying to extinguish the fire still burning under the car. He won't suceed, and shortly after, the firemen will have to flip the car on its side to expose the reservoir.

The SEAL team split up. Wolfgang headed north to his father's lair to fetch the silver that Sir Caelan paid them. The rest of the gang bought some supplies in the nearby city of Grahnhaven and then moved to Uncle Woolsey's cave. They were supposed to meet Wolfgang here but he did not show up on the due date.
Four days passed by... The gang became concerned so they decided to head north and meet Wolfgang half way. They encountered some really depressed travellers on the road; all of them were complaining about the new Queen's forces who apparently started to gain control of this outlying area in southern Garheim too. A new patrol enforces the taxation orders of the Queen (which is basically "shut up and give us all your money").
The forest turned slowly into a rocky countryside. As they got around a huge boulder they ran right into the Queen's patrol.
"Halt! In the name of Queen Galainir, we demand that you pay the taxes!" said a black knight, the supposed commander of the patrol.
"But we are outlaws, good Sir knight! I thought her Highness had a we-charge-no-outlaws policy! Can't we just carry on? asked Söndör.
"None shall pass until you payed us!" the black knight looked at his troops and nodded towards the gang. The soldiers drew their weapons and started to surround them...
"As you wish, good Sir. How much do we need to pay?"
"Let's start with all your money! And the wagon... If we take the wagon, we also take the supplies on it, so you don't have to carry those heavy goods. Just to show you how generous I am, I let you keep your weapons.
There was nothing to do. The team was outnumbered, their weapons were on the wagon and the soldiers were just waiting for a suspicious movement to storm them. The gang handed over all their possession and hit the road followed by the laughter and taunts of the soldiers.
"That is just great!" said Zlorf. "Wolfgang won't be thrilled. He was not fond of the Queen till now, but he will be enraged, especially when we tell him that not only our supplies have been confiscated but Oinky and Porky too!"
"I agree, let's find him for starters." said Letz.
To be continued...

Labor day is not just for parties and festivals, but a time to remember the brave leaders and men and women of the labor movement who walked the lines, took the beatings and did the work that ended child labor, started the path toward employment equality for women, gave us the 8 hour day, 40 hour week, overtime, paid vacations, health care and the great United States middle class. The Labor Legacy Landmark
With its shining arch rising 63 feet above the ground, the Labor Legacy Landmark, "Transcending," draws attention to itself as one of the newest additions to the Detroit skyline. The piece, commissioned by the Michigan Labor Legacy Project and funded solely through donations from union members without the aid of public or corporate money, is designed to celebrate the history and contributions of labor. The only such monument in the United States, the Labor Legacy Landmark is the work of local sculptors David Barr and Sergio De Giusti.
Barr, a teacher of sculpture and an internationally acclaimed artist, created the "Four Corners Project," in which he placed four carved marble tetrahedrons at equidistant sites around the globe, in effect creating the largest sculpture ever made. The Italian-born De Giusti is best known for his representative relief works, on display at public institutions throughout the state and around the world. One of De Giusti's works,a nine-foot bronze freestanding relief, is prominently displayed at the main plaza of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Building.
Barr, whose work is primarily abstract and symbolic, sought out the collaboration with De Giusti in order to add a more intimate dimension to the project. Both men envisioned something other than the funereal, European tradition of famous leaders commemorated by solemn statues. Instead, they set out to create a space - an environment where viewers can enjoy art as they come to understand and appreciate the struggles of labor.
From afar, (the piece can be seen from Canada) the work's great stainless steel arch is its most visible aspect. The notched, rounded arch resembles the ubiquitous symbol of labor - the gear and serves as a testament to labor's spirit of exuberance and defiance.
"Transcending's" circular form also stands in contrast to the city's grid-like design as a symbol of inclusion. The bottom of the gear appears to merge into the earth. Barr says, "The world drives industry and labor, and industry and labor drive the world."
The arch rests on a circular, raised dais, and is partially encircled by seven granite boulders all split symmetrically in two. According to De Giusti "Stones have a great presence and have always been used to commemorate events. They are markers of a people and a generation." Brought from Vermont, the stones suggest a strong linkage to the past and their permanence creates a link towards our future.
The boulders' polished surfaces are adorned with De Giusti's bronze reliefs which depict the sacrifices and achievements of labor. His method of presenting objects pushing through and receding into the flat surface of the relief, suggests the embedding of fossils in stone. In direct sunlight, the bronze shines like a geode from within the split rock.
The piece also includes a twisting marble path. A tile at the beginning of the path is engraved with the words, "Labor's achievements are America's strength," and subsequent tiles enumerate those achievements - "Free public education," "Human rights," "Equality for women." Other tiles feature historical labor-related quotes such as "Without struggle there is no progress" (attributed to Frederick Douglas), and Martin Luther King's words, "The arc of history bends toward justice."
De Giusti's reliefs line the path at it spirals inward. At the spiral's center are two boulders - one displaying chains and the other displaying hands - directly below the apex of Barr's arch. A look straight upwards reveals that the arch is divided by a narrow gap at the top. This separation symbolizes how far labor has come and how far it still has to go. At night the arch is made whole by lights projecting from the two disconnected ends.
When the piece was still in the proposal stage, then-Mayor Dennis Archer told the Detroit Free Press, "What the labor movement is doing is reminding everybody who builds buildings that public art also has a place in the betterment of a city." In "Transcending" Barr and De Giusti have created not only an important piece of art but also a significant historical and educational setting designed to connect viewers to the past and inspire them to affect their future. - Nick Sousanis
Ho soffiato sulle nuvole
di TITTY(bio.)
Ho soffiato sulle nuvole addensate sui miei ricordi,
I have blown on the clouds
of TITTY (bio.)
I have blown on the clouds thickened on my memories,
I have stopped tears it suspended in the void,
you distill in the heart,
lost among hisses of wind,
I have looked for lost evanescent fairies between the flowers of lavender and the crying sky of one forgotten August,
I have chained dreams painting them with colored brushes,
I have sailed on a sea of vortexes,
it veils pushed from once of forgetfulness
and I have been suspended to regrets,
one hundred years in a hand and in the other sparks of stars.
he encadenado sueños pintándolos con pinceles colorados,
he navegado sobre un mar de remolinos,
vela empujada de un tiempo de olvido
y he quedado colgada a añoranzas,
