Hong Kong’s Peak Tram is a fixture in the memories of many residents and tourists, ferrying passengers up Victoria Peak for a bird’s eye view of the city’s many skyscrapers.

Enthusiasts and others have been rushing for one last ride before the Peak Tram closes for renovations. The tram will stop service on Monday for a six-month makeover, in part to reduce waiting times for the growing crowds.

Moongazers in Hong Kong were out in force on Wednesday evening for the rare cosmic event known as the "super blood moon". While some said they enjoyed the occasion, others were left disappointed, saying the moon was mostly hiding behind the clouds.

Before nightfall, scores of people carrying cameras and tripods were already seen in Shek O, Quarry Bay and Whampoa, considered to be the prime spots for the phenomenon.

Under the super blood moon, a full lunar eclipse coincides with a supermoon, which is when the moon is particularly close to Earth and appears brighter than normal.

And for about 15 minutes, the moon appears to turn red as it moves fully into Earth's shadow.

Hong Kong last witnessed the phenomenon over 20 years ago, and it won't happen here again for another 12 years, which was why some people at the Whampoa waterfront told RTHK they came early to get the best viewing spot.

"I took a couple of hours off to come here a bit earlier, just to make sure I can secure a good spot," Linda said.

"It's pretty exciting because things are happening at the same time, you have the moon eclipse, the supermoon and the blood moon... I think it's quite an extraordinary experience."

Hundreds of people eventually filled the promenade, but their spirits were quickly dampened by the clouds after 7 pm, when the lunar eclipse was supposed to take place.

"There're too many clouds, around 80 percent of the time they shrouded the moon," a moongazer surnamed Lam complained.

"And I can't see the reddish colour, I only see a white moon."

Still, there were those who were happy with the experience.

"Although it is cloudy, we can still take some beautiful photos," said Angela, who came with her friends.

She said she did not mind waiting for an hour just to catch glimpses of the moon from time to time.

"When it comes out from the clouds again, it is more exciting for us."

She said she will gladly go moongazing again 12 years later when the super blood moon reappears here.

Hong Kong’s Sarah Lee on Sunday captured the bronze medal in the women’s track cycling sprint competition in Tokyo, becoming the first local athlete to win medals in two separate Olympic Games.

Having grown up in a grassroot family in the now demolished public estate Lower Ngau Tau Kok Estate, Lee had to sell pocket tissues on the street to help her family make ends meet when she was young.

During my latest walking forays into the side streets off major commercial thoroughfares in Minneapolis, I am finding new venues that I never knew existed.

This is one that I found and the first thing that came into my mind was Mr. Roger's Neighborhood.

Now I admit, I watched Mr. Roger's Neighborhood, not as a kid, but as a middle-aged and then senior citizen. Why?

Hell if I know. Have no idea why it was so mesmerizing. There was something comforting and remarkable in his message. Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood was the way I wanted the world to be.

Fred Roger's himself was how I wanted to be! I mean, I truly am a nice person. I've been told I am a compassionate, sensitive, funny , and understanding fellow, but I certainly am light years from achieving Mr. Rogers' consistency.

I've seen him on shows other than children's show. He's Mr. Rogers on a full-time basis! That is astounding to me!

The Prayer of St. Francis begins "Lord, make me an instrument of your Peace. . . ."

I'm going to contemporize it . . . "Lord, me me like Mr. Rogers, and the World like Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood. Amen,!"

From June to September, Kibune's restaurants build covered platforms out over the river where visitors can enjoy a meal as the water flows beneath them. Known as kawadoko 川床料理, dining on the platforms is a relaxing experience and an excellent way to escape the summer heat.

Deliveroo plans to expand its Editions footprint across more Hong Kong neighbourhoods, after the success of its four initial sites.

Editions are shared kitchens which allow restaurants to prepare meals for customers located outside their normal delivery area. Since Covid-19 impacted restaurants’ dine-in business, the remote kitchens allow them to reach new customers and boost their sales without opening separate brick-and-mortar venues.

A fifth Deliveroo Editions base has just opened in Tuen Mun – the first in the New Territories – and at least three more are on track for completion by December.

Deaths from Covid-19 complications in Hong Kong have been crossing the 100 mark daily over the past four days such that the city now has the world's highest fatality rate for the coronavirus, mostly among undervaccinated elderly residents.

Authorities said they were funnelling more resources to senior patients, particularly those from care homes that had been ravaged by infections, but according to experts the measures were still too slow to come on stream and they warned that more grim statistics lay ahead.

They suggested instead that certain treatments such as intravenous medication could be performed directly in care homes, short-circuiting cumbersome rules that existed. Several also called on the government to speed up the process of sending elderly patients to temporary isolation or care facilities to lower cross-infection risks, as well as to vaccinate seniors who had not yet caught Covid-19.

According to database Our World in Data, the seven-day rolling average of Covid-19-related deaths per 1 million people in Hong Kong was 17.8, topping the global chart as of Thursday. Latvia came in second, with 10.71, and Georgia ranked third at 9.05. (20220308 SCMP)

David’s Mother, Eugene, was born a mile from the church door, was married in the church to David’s Father, is laid to rest within the church grounds.

Today, we took roses to lay upon her grave and David sang, alone, in the church that’s born witness to so much of the circle of his families life.

Hong Kong rail giant the MTR Corporation has further reduced operations after logging a record 227 Covid-19 infections among its employees in a single day, taking the total number of cases at the company to more than 1,100.

The rail operator said on Tuesday morning that trains would be running less frequently on the Island and Tuen Ma lines after several conductors were either infected or quarantined as close contacts.

“Since these train drivers can’t report for duty, the rail service on the Island line and Tuen Ma line has to be slightly adjusted during peak hours … The service will run at a longer interval by up to half a minute,” a spokeswoman said.

The rail firm reported 227 Covid-19 infections, including preliminary-positive ones, on Monday. So far, more than 1,100 MTR employees – including train drivers, station staff, maintenance workers and cleaners – have contracted the virus since the city’s fifth wave struck in late December. The Hong Kong photographer, Fan Ho, who is often dubbed the "Henri Cartier-Bresson" of the East, liked to use grassroots life as his theme and he has many black and white photos taken in the 1950s and 60s, using the Central Market staircases as background.

These include his Afternoon Chat (1956), Market Stairway (1959), Smokey Staircase (1959) and Inferno (1962).

They say that Fan Ho would come to the market at 3:45 every day and take pictures of the scenes he felt had the most Hong Kong flavour.

In his pictures, you can often see a clock on the terrazzo stairs pointing to the time 3:45.

The reason his photographic works are so interesting is precisely because of the stories they tell.Fan applied his film storytelling skills to photography. His audience may have come from different cultural backgrounds, but the worldly human sentiments captured in his lens resonate with everyone even today.
